It was Barry’s brother Robin who opened the song. You can hear more of Robin’s distinctive voice in their breakthrough hit of 1968,”Massachusetts”. He sadly passed away in 2012 and is buried in our local town of Thame ( pronounced Tame) Oxfordshire, England. None as good as Robins vibrato , Barry will tell you that
@susieq98012 жыл бұрын
Actually Robin is the ONLY BROTHER with vibrato and it is something you have or don't have. It is controlled by the central nervous system on the vocal chords and is a rapid fire alteration in PITCH like AC current. He can go from A to A# to A to A# to A in a millisecond and doesn't even try to. It's natural. Barry uses tremolo which is singing a note in a single pitch but varying VOLUME. They are totally different but can be mistaken for the same thing. Tremolo can be learned. Vibrato cannot be learned. All three could sing falsetto, "false voice", which is singing unnaturally high above tenor for a man. Yes, Barry said Robin had a gift and it took him no effort to sing like he did. Many singers copy Barry's falsetto and tremolo by his own admission but nobody can cover Robin's iconic leads and avoid trying.
@trinkab2 жыл бұрын
@@susieq9801 interesting... whether you can develop it or not seems debatable. A simple search around shows classes and trainng to develop it if you don't have it (easier when younger of course.)
@susieq98012 жыл бұрын
@@trinkab - It is "debatable" I suppose but any debate can go both ways, aye or nay. A pure natural vibrato is a gift in the opinion of many who analyze voice. Barry said Robin had it with no effort at all. I don't believe Barry ever claimed to have vibrato in his own voice. Never heard it in Maurice's or Andy's voices either although both had lovely voices. Someone who consciously attempts to learn it will never have the same quality as someone with a pure natural vibrato. I can't carry a tune in a bucket and no amount of voice lessons will ever make me Linda Ronstadt. I wish! Just like taking guitar lessons won't make everyone Eric Clapton. 😁

Robin Gibbs vocals stood out even in the Bee gees Harmony. There's two terms you can apply to his style of singing, vibrato or, tremolo. Which is a very fast repetition of a single note to produce shivering and a shaking effect. Robin does it effortlessly. It sounds as if he's singing in front of a slow spinning fan. Other songs that feature his unique vibrato are, I've got to get a message to you, I started a joke, odessa, lamp light, saved by the bell, and my favorite by Robin, Massachusetts.

I think they knew what each of them could do. They'd sung together since they were little. Someone just decided to bank on a different sound coming from Barry and put more focus on his conventional good looks to hang on to success as they moved into the new decade and the catchy rhythms of the disco era. Those just discovering The Bee Gees at this time and only hearing the harmonies and Barry's falsetto didn't have much opportunity to hear Robin and the incredible beauty and uniqueness of his lead vocals, and he became just one of the "other brothers" who too often remained nameless at the side of Barry. It's sad that it became only a "Barry" thing... when each of the brothers had/have so much to offer listeners.
