We Happy Few is a game I've had my eye for a long time, and it's finally entered Early Access after an impressive E3 trailer. And yet, something's not quite right here...

I'm increasingly wondering if a narrative-mystery can ever work with a survival-system - any time you're on a ticking clock with limited resources to survive, you're actively disincentivised from taking the time to observe and listen - especially when the counter go down so fast that you can lose a whole day with just a couple of houses explored...

I don't know if you've played it yet, but there is another, albeit older, British, dystopian, survival game out there called "Sir, you are being hunted". You might enjoy it. Also, if everyone is suppose to be on "happy" pills, then how is anyone demonstrating anger, fear or emotions aside from happy? Design flaw?

''He actually knows how to play games'' Commented on a 50 minute long video of Jon whining about game mechanics while ignoring them. He complains for 50 min over inventory space. But there's a Safe in his home where he can store all his crafting materials, AND still be able to use them for crafting anywhere in the game. He starts off with a Inventory expansion, that slightly increases it, suggesting there will be lots more of them later on in the game. Idk Jons problem, I didn't have issues with inventory at all in the first half of the game. Oh and not getting descriptions on items. What more description on a leaf do you want when It literally says ''used for creating herbal medicine'' Sorry mate, but Jon did not display much more than bad mentality, personality, skill, bad thinking and slow thought process in this video. 0/10 entertainment. Jons commentary & actions in-game were more depressing than the environment the game is set in.

I'd argue this early access is more like selling a bag of flour as 'early access cake' - it simply isn't close to ready for public consumption, because none of the constituent mechanics (survival, stealth, questing) or focuses (mystery, narrative, exploration) - not one of them is properly implemented or competently working. It's a beautiful game where nothing works.

+Many A True Nerd I like your videos, but you missed a lot of stuff. The story is kinda missing, that is a problem. The main part of the game is off the spawning island. There you will get notes that explains the story better. There is a gate that needs a power cell or, some times it's just guarded so you can run though and hide. You also never used the inventory expander. It says press e or something to use. The plague I never seen, so IDK what to do. Also, read the item description. The time may still be moving, it's helpful though. I said "But" and "There" too much, but I'm doing this on a IPad, 11:30 at night, and this is a KZbin comment. Needs to be readable, not a school essay. Still, you make great videos. Keep it up.

That's not his fault - the game didn't teach him how to play it. It's the equivalent of giving someone a LEGO set, who has no idea what LEGO is or how it works, and telling them to build a set without instructions. They might get there, but they're very unlikely to.

@ManyATrueNerd
@ManyATrueNerd 8 жыл бұрын
It's because they're holding back the bit that would make it work - the E3 trailer is heavily story, and you can't do a mystery-narrative-game without the narrative to keep people going through the quite slow exploring-survival stuff. It's like releasing Early Access Undertale with none of the story or music. It just doesn't work.

@barryberney723 8 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon, big fan. There were a few bits I think you missed in the game. The Inventory item you had opens up another line in your inventory, making it easier to collect stuff. They're dotted about the place too. There's a safe for storage in your safehouse, and it links to your on character inventory, so crafting is easy enough.And the levels are way more interesting when you cross the bridges, with more types of challenges. You might have played more since recording or whatever and figured those things out but I thought I'd let you know. And if you just don't like the game, fair enough! Love your content, especially Fallout, keep it up!
@2Cerealbox
@2Cerealbox 8 жыл бұрын
I would agree with that, except that the term "alpha" seems to have changed significantly when it comes to modern games. Alpha used to mean a working prototype to iterate on. But having purchased a number of early-access games, rather than contain 10% of the final content, it's 80% finished. If this is TRUELY Alpha, then yes, this is perfectly acceptable. It has all the core elements, but not the plot or details or whatever. But what are really the odds of that happening? This is almost certainly nearly done.

But if you are in the process of creating a cake out of that flour, you can't just eat the flour and say, my goodness this cake is awful, since it is not a completed cake yet. This version of the game is creating the building blocks on which to continue to create the game. Perhaps it might become better with time since they will have feedback from players and can incorporate that feedback into the game. Like with dungeons and dragons did with 5e, they playtested it with many people and worked out the bugs and decided on the rule set based on the feedback of the playtesters. Sure, this game may be boring currently, but how many games do you think would be brilliant if they were only 50% complete? Not many I would surmise.

Actually Jon, you do get context if you actually pay attention to your surroundings, you missed many things for example, you missed an entire area of the mined area which indeed did have a shovel in it, you seemed to hate on the game for things you missed, while I admit that the UI maybe a bit difficult to use, you get used to it after a while, you must also remember that in this video you never left the first area. After this the world becomes quite distinctive. However you seemed to be going into this game with a lot of doubts which made this video very hard to watch, I'm sure many would appreciate it if you went back into this game with a more open mind, and pay more attention to your surroundings. So I have to say Jon, I disliked the video.

"you must also remember that in this video you never left the first area. After this the world becomes quite distinctive." @ManyATrueNerd
@ManyATrueNerd 8 жыл бұрын
My issue with the treehouse quests is that they ask you to hand over a really rare and valuable item (a full first aid kit), and the game doesn't tell you why, and doesn't give you anything in exchange. I've just been robbed of a useful item, and I know it's just because a crazy man wanted it for a doll...

Not really, because the what he's saying is the game gives him literally no reason to do the thing other than some insane guy telling him to and so he, with no promise of reward, just has to hand over a rare and valuable item. Yes, he may get the resources to build another one from the subsequent quest, but the game doesn't imply that in any way and just expects you to go against all sense and do something stupid for, as far as you call tell at the time, no reward.
@papamemealacreme5004
@papamemealacreme5004 8 жыл бұрын
+AlmightyK "The idea is that it leads you through a quest chain" okay and? the quest doesn't at least hint at a reward so why would you sacrifice a potentially lifesaving item to see this quest chain through when you have no incentive other then you knowing that this is a game and that you have to get something back for completing the quest.Its just bad game design. Not to mention that the early sections of the quest look fairly uninteresting and you don't get any mid-term reward to give actual in-game incentive rather than immersion breaking incentive.
@Selvunwindful
@Selvunwindful 8 жыл бұрын
That it's a tutorial, and that it's a quest chain, doesn't excuse that it seems, so far, boring, a little frustrating, and the rewards at each step feels far worse than what you're actually giving up.

Didn't put anything in the safe in the base to save inventory space while still being able to use the contents of the safe in crafting. Didn't use the inventory expansion to get more inventory. "What does this leaf do, is it useful?" while the description lays out exactly what the leaf is for. Demands more story in the first area of the game, when he has 3 more areas to get to that explains how the society that he complains knowing nothing about works. Complains about "all the quests are given by loonies" in a game about a drug fueled dystopia. Like I get the tutorials are lacking, and the game has a slow start past the Exposition Dump of the opening sequence, but a little bit of elbow grease and reading up about game mechanics could have saved at least some of the frustrations. And the main storyline literally goes nowhere because of how early the alpha is. They want to work out all the mechanical kinks before giving away the story before the game is even released as a full game.

Or hell, even the reading of a SINGLE ITEM DESCRIPTION might have helped. But when you go in listening to the collective complaints of people on the internet, you're already going in looking for faults. So it's not surprising to see all the negativity. Conversely, I've been watching people GREATLY ENJOYING themselves playing the game... and by extension it has made me really want to give it a try myself to see what all the fuss is about. I'm more likely to go into it expecting to ENJOY the game, and therefore focus on the positive aspects. Perspective is a funny thing. Neither answer is correct. The game has a lot of flaws and bugs... it's far from perfect. That being said, I prefer to think that when a reviewer/commentator goes into something with a neutral or positive expectation their experience is more indicative of the average audience member's experience.
@Sephroth73
@Sephroth73 8 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is that he shouldn't have to go to read up on the game mechanics, at least the basic ones. Tutorials are really important in games like these or people feel overwhelmed and rightfully so. I can understand that he did stuff wrong and that some of those mistakes are his BUT a lot of that frustration comes from things the game doesn't flag. Maybe a "Your sick! Better find such and such" would do a world of good. Additionally, I don't know how I feel about the generated levels. I'd prefer something that I could learn and progress through better every play through, and it also deals with the repeated assets and inability to figure out where quests are going issue. I can see something good in here,but it needs a lot of work before it's worth $30. And yes, early access, but considering how many games never leave early access I don't take that as a defense anymore. Even of it's imperfect, unfinished, and buggy a game should be able to stand on it's own two feet if it's for sale and this one isn't there yet.

I've watched people play The Forest since before there were SWIM ANIMATIONS... when enemies could literally walk around as conglomerates of meat chunks... or be entirely invisible and unkillable... and LOVE it. I watched Starbound go from a half-assed Terraria-in-Space knockoff into one of my absolute favorite games to both watch AND play. I've seen games that barely functioned in Early Access grow devoted audiences of people happily wading through the uninteresting, lackluster graphics and broken mechanics to derive joy from the small handful of things that actually worked. They went on to provide helpful commentary and criticism to developers, which also helped result in a better finished product. Here's an interesting note. The game DOES tell you when you're sick. It's one of those things which conveniently never makes it into the video, but there's actually a menu screen which clearly states EVERY status effect, passive effect, and a variety of other things plain as day in the menu. It just requires that you bother to READ it. Now, it doesn't tell you exactly what item you need to find in order to fix the problem... but again... if you READ a little, you'll discover that the various health items you can build actually describe the things they heal. Like the cure which can heal the plague, but only if you catch it soon enough. Or the infection-curing bandages you can make once you find the recipe. How much more does it need to do before you deem the game to have put in satisfactory effort? Dylan Grosso

Dylan Grosso That last bit is genuine curiosity, honestly. I'm admittedly more willing to forgive such things because frankly... I find most modern games to be too "hand-holdy" as one might put it. That's all well and good, but I'm also not admittedly the WIDER audience to which this game has to appeal.

Ok, i have a lot of things to say. First, in your safe house you have a safe deposit for storing some of your items. Then, the little backpack in your inventory can be activated in order to unlock one extra ligne of space in your inventory. Also, when you run the game, you can read a little message from the dev team saying to you that the early acces version of the game only contain the survival part of the game (no campaign) and only 50% of the size of the final map.

From what I have seen with other you-tubers (I haven't played this game myself), It looks like the game was much more designed for mouse and keyboard, the inventory management is easier and with the mouse you can select particular markers on the map to find out what they are identifying.

Damn, that trailer had SO much going for it. The first few minutes of the game had SO much going for it. Why the hell would you promote an alpha of a game at E3, and then only showing an amazing piece of the story and linear story area when that is absolutely not representative of the game at all? Jon hit it right on the head when he said that the developers took a wrong turn at just about every corner. The kings of making bad decisions right there. Such a shame. If the hour of gameplay I just saw was in ANY way connected to the first few minutes of the game I'd be all over it. But it's like I was looking at two completely different games. I just don't understand what they were thinking.

I really don't think this game deserves all the hate it gets. People seem to forget that this is a VERY early playable version, it's nowhere near finished yet. I'm sure things like how fast time passes, the inventory etc. will be fixed in later versions. Isn't that one of the purposes of releasing an alpha, listening to the players so they know what to fix?

But generally people are in the right tracks with their game - this is completely wrong. I look at this and I can't see the end product. However, something like Space Engineers was (is?) Early Access and, when it came out, while it wasn't perfect, you could see where it was going. This is not that. Jon said further up the comments that it's like giving someone a bag of flour advertised as a cake. It's not fit for consumption yet because all the key features aren't there.

I think it's the memories of what the town did, and what happenned to them during the war that has damaged the peoples minds. The joy on top of that, then stopping the joy, seems to create a psychiatric disaster zone by messing with the natural grieving processes. Arthur isn't mad though, not yet...

You never even equipped the backpack...I realise it doesn't tell you how, but experimenting a little bit would tell you that you have to click on it. Would have given you another full bar of inventory, which isn't great, but would've been useful. Also, to learn more about the world you have to get past the bridges, which isn't explained very well either, but still.

This video basically comes down to, "This game is in very early access so the tool tips aren't perfect so I can't figure out basic game concepts like how to organize my inventory. I also can't be bothered to read what it is I'm picking up so I didn't notice my inventory expansion packs. All of this is the fault of the game which is in VERY VERY EARLY ACCESS therefore it's not good." Honestly I expect better from someone who plays a lot of fallout where much of the game is not knowing what to do and the game explains pretty much nothing, especially in New Vegas.

The game becomes really fun the further you progress into the city, you get to a point where you get back into the main city's and theres cops searching for downers, theres old lady's that are good at spotting downers, theres happy pills in vending machines around that you can buy to get into specific area's, theres multiple houses you can break into and steal stuff from with residents that yell for cops and such that you can take down and hide in closets or bathrooms, its actually a really fun game when you figure out what items are good, figure out the map markers and such to be able to quest properly, and understand the mannerisms of what people use to get around.. You can have fun if you spend enough time figuring out how the game currently works, you can watch guides from other players that have already figured it out and get to learn the basics or you could just wait till the games not in alpha anymore and there will most likely be a ton of changes and make it a much funner and easier game i would assume :)

You're only in the initial area in the garden district. There are five islands in total and you have to complete certain quests to get the items or information to go over to the other areas in the game. The full story isn't in the game yet, although there are a number of 'environmental story telling' elements that give you an idea how bad things are getting and how Wellington Wells is on the verge of collapse. The Uncle Jack shows are interesting in how they say a lot about the world you're now living in, but not necessarily in the speech he is saying. The major mechanic in the game is stealth and learning to fit in, which can mean crafting certain items to become more 'invisible' to the residents or finding a way past them. The initial phase of the game is spent finding a source of reliable food and healing items (which requires crafting healing balm) to prepare you for when you get over to the village of Hamlyn as these items will not be quite as easy to come by. You'll also need key items like Police security cards, joy pills and power cells to pass the anti-downer defences for one type of bridge for example. Combat (like it is in any situation where you're a office nerd trying to survive) is going to be a highly hit and miss affair, so you'll have to work around that situation by either hiding, placating the locals, distracting the locals or having a collection of hard hitting weapons that can end combat quickly before you attract attention and get swamped by a mob of people. A solid cricket bat can lay out a group of Wastrels or Bobbies with a few hits if you can bunch them up in front of you. Anyway, don't give up on it yet. It needs a slightly different mindset to pass the various challenges in the game, and the people are not enemies, merely people trapped by circumstances that killing them all isn't going to fix. And it's an alpha so still early days with respect to the full concept and the final story which will be in the game with the final release.

Jon if you like this sort of thing, you should definitely check out the book 1984 if you haven't already. It's my all time favourite book, and it's simply amazing. In fact, it looks like We Happy Few has taken some big inspirations from 1984, such as the main character working in a censorship division, pneumatic tunes bringing papers and such, massive wars going on in the background, and a whole bunch of other similarities.
