We Harvested a Year's Worth of Garlic + A Bonus Potato Harvest!
For this year's garlic harvest, we kept cloves from the garlic we harvested last season, and since this is the first time that we have tried this specific way of growing garlic, we weren't sure how successful we would be.
We saw lots of promising signs over the growing season, as we got a great scape harvest, and so we had high hopes going into this garlic harvest 2024. We were not disappointed! Not every garlic clove was huge, but most were a great size. The two types of garlic we harvested are Georgian Crystal and Chesnok Red garlic, and we have enough to last the whole year.
On top of a look at how to harvest garlic, we also have a bonus red potato harvest 2024 from this raised bed garden. The red potatoes we harvest in this video are a volunteer potato harvest brought to you by the potatoes I missed during last season's fall potato harvest.
We hope you enjoy this garlic harvest video and potato harvest video.
Thank you for watching!

Your volunteer potatoes are far bigger and more prolific than the potatoes I purposely planted. I had a horrible potato harvest this year

So now you have to take your best garlic and sacrifice them for your next year's crops because you have to use the best for seed, cuttings, bulbs, etc......... If you want the BEST garlic for YOUR farm then keep planting the best of what you harvest and eventually it will be better than anything you can get elsewhere. But you could bring in another type or two and use a couple types of garlic to develop something that's best for your farm. good video.

I love your videos! Your harvest was beautiful. I have an experiment suggestion that may take a couple of years before you can do. Buy seed garlic for next year and rather than following that websites suggestion of cutting off the leaves before they dry down, leave the leaves fully intact until the neck area of the garlic is completely dry. Do that for half of them and process the rest the way you normally do. Leaving the leaves on until they fully dry down helps the garlic last longer (mine lasts over a year) and pulls the last bit of nutrients and strength to grow bigger cloves the next year. The following year, choose the biggest and best heads of garlic with the biggest cloves from both batches (leaves left on vs those that were cut off) and plant them and see if there is a difference in the size of heads that you get. My garlic comes back bigger with larger cloves every year. This year they were fist sized. They are from garlic I have saved and replanted for 15 years, always choosing the biggest and best heads to replant. You will then have free garlic every year, just like you have free potatoes!

Could the volunteer potatoes have taken nutrients away from the garlics? All in all a good harvest... great videos!

The garlic was probably competing too much with the potatoes since you had a lot more than you expected.

Potatoes supposedly have no companions, but you've shown this is obviously Not True. Looks like beneficial effects to me. With Garlic imo, flavor intensity is more important than size. Thx for taking us along for the harvest.😎 PS : also showing garlic spacing rules may not be True either. Ha!

Zone 5b here with same exact experience with garlic as you for last two years. Last year started with seed garlic and obtained large heads. This year, started with our garden seed cloves, which produced small to medium heads, harvested yesterday. Chesnok Red Hardneck Garlic. Still beautiful.
