Hi Kayleigh suggest u look at a cooling system flush and check hoses seeing as the cooling system might have been neglected. The other thing to consider is an engine oil change seeing as the oil has been run over temperature. It will bring everything up to scratch..cheers Ian

P.S. 50/50 water antifreeze is good my artic lorry in USA ran from 46 degrees in texas down to minus 5 Degrees in north Dakota That is Celsius degrees. though we still use centigrade in USA took a while to get used to the change when i got to USA you should never have any troubles . You don't appear to have put any inserts into the cut pipe? They are important for keeping the shape of the pipe and helping to prevent leaks.

Also prevents pushing the “o” rings out of the fitting

That expansion vessel you’re using for an accumulator isn’t for potable water and should only be used on heating systems . Swap it when you can. 👍🏻👍🏻

Don’t forget to put antifreeze in the engine when you replace the thermostat to avoid any corrosion in the engine again.

Give your engine a "rejuvenation spa treatment"!! ...and then keep it happy! - coolant circuit - long flush with a rust-solvent (specifics depend on whether you have a iron-engine or aluminium engine) - then fill with the highest concentration anti-freeze possible! Though not often, you can have super-low freeze-events in the UK.... The highest concentration doesn't cool as well as pure water, but NB-engines are usually not High-Performance engines, you shouldn't have a problem with cooling ever! - check the optimum temperature for your engine (manufacturer!) - and test if the selected thermostat actually keeps the engine running at that temperature - if not, adjust the thermostat accordingly (...which means a new one with a different opening setting) - contrary to popular myth, NO engine wants to run cool!! Most every engine wants to run properly heated up - usually around 96-102°C water temp - in a usually pressurized cooling circuit. Cold/cool running engines wear a LOT faster than a proper warm engine!! (That does not mean the thermostat opens at 96 - it needs to open before that. The water temp sensor needs to be working correctly to get you there! If that one stays low when the engine is warmed up, you need a higher temp thermostat...) - look up the factory recommended oil for the engine (also considering the ambient temperature range throughout the year....) - then look up if your favorite oil brand carries a premium - full synthetic replacement for the recommended oil! Usually a oil manufacturer will have a whole range of synthetic replacements for older engine ranges... a - you will likely be able to extend oil change intervals b - in conjunction with a switch to premium synthetics you also should upgrade your filter system - at least double the filter capacity (dual-filter kit) and use a premium filter model - NOT the cheapest - "because it gets changed anyway".... (In a low power engine, a good synthetic will live nearly for ever - provided you give it premium filtration! - The idea is to provide premium protection to your engine while reducing oil-waste) c - change filters (premium filters!) regularly d - every other filter change - take a sample from the oil and send it out for testing (that will very precisely indicate when you should change the oil - with the proper synthetic this will likely not be necessary for years! As an example (there are other oils brands with very closely matching specs...) - Mobil Delvac1 5-40W is a oil used by a huge number of truck fleets with oil-change intervals of up to 180k km!! That oil is likely overkill for your engine, but it certainly won't hurt it!! Contrary - it will help your engine to run smoother and perform better (which you should recognize by less consumption....) e1 - of course you can play even more if you like - like a "super-fine bypass filter" system - but here it starts to get a little more expensive... e2 - another cheaper improvement is a - "start-accu" - similar to the hot-water-accumulator you just installed - it is small accu-tank that will store pressurized oil. Just before starting the engine you release that pressurized oil into the engine oil system - pre-lubricating the engine before starting... (however if you run the engine frequently - like at least once every 3 days, a good synthetic will usually stay on most surfaces...) You have a beautiful ship there!! Cheers, TJ

Your dad did exactly what I would have done, remove the stat. Although Big is right, they are much cheaper from a motor factors or even the likes of Halfords. Another good job out of the way and every one, no matter how small, is all progress. The white pipe connecting the accumulator appeared to have metal inserts but the grey pipes into the new "gate valve" (not tap) didn't. Glad you're sorted out now though!

Hi in future never buy engine parts or oil and filters from chandlers a thermostat is about £6 from a motor factors also when you refill your engine with antifreeze a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze&water stops corrosion in the engine
