I loved this story, and the art of Pepe Moreno. I loved his work in Rebel, also. Back I was deep into Heavy Metal and Epic magazine. I miss both of those mags. I learned so much from them both, and was exposed to art and artists that I'd never seen before. Those were the days.

Marvel played itself to the Nth degree shutting down Epic right around the time Vertigo was taking off. I don’t think I’d still be a comic fan if it wasn’t for the art, stories, and creators published in Epic. There’s so much more for the medium to offer - Chris

If you REALLY want your mind blown by a serialized story from Epic Illustrated, look up Abraxas and the Earthman. (or the collected edition if you can find it)

Oh, I adore Rick Veitch!! He is SO underrated and perhaps the ONLY person who could have followed Moore, Bissette & Totleben on SWAMP THING and done so insanely well. Talk about some intimidating footsteps to follow… Yikes! Veitch is one of the greats - thank you for reminding me about ABRAXAS! I am familiar with the existence of it, but I’ve never read it and always wanted to. Consider it added to our list for the show! - Steven

If you like this Pepe also did a comic called REBEL while not quite as good as this it's still light years ahead of most other stuff.

Yeah, thanks for the suggestion. I’ve seen the cover and some of the interiors from REBEL - it does look super dope! I’m sure I will check it out at some point when I need another Moreno fix. - Steve

Yeah, seriously! This comic is pretty much the definition of “obscure” and that’s so crazy when you look at how gorgeous the art is. Glad you enjoyed Chris’ invocation of the great Hugo Pratt & CORTO MALTESE! - Steven

Nice one Chris and Steve.. I don't remember this book growing up, the art kind of reminds me of Air Tight Garage / Heavy Metal. Love the saturated colors, and also how the color palette moves from panel to panel. That kind of ink / gouache color application especially the gradients and cross hatching reminds me of Möbius. Cool book.

Epic Illustrated was Marvel's answer of sorts to HEAVY METAL magazine. I still have a number of issues and it was a great experiment by Marvel. Really great stories and art in those issues, especially GENERATION ZERO.
