My husband and I lived in Panama from 1978-1981 military duty, we loved it, well I did because I wasn’t the one in the Army LOL- we had our two oldest children born at Gorgas Hospital , we first lived off base in a small town called Arahjian( not sure if it’s spelled correctly), we met some great people and had lots of parties with Mike White, Krenke, McIntosh, Paul and Cindy Davis, Tricia and Butch Cheers, Chris and Ray Wilson, Pat and Louie, John and Bonita Abbey, Tony and Violet Attila and others too, we think about ALL of you guys often, if any of you guys read this, John was stationed at Ft. I live in California and I miss my Panama as well. I had the fortune to be born in the smallest province and grew up in the country side of it. I will never regret living there; drinking fresh milk every morning and climbing the big mangoes and guava trees in my backyard . Picking fresh corn, watermelons, tomatoes, oranges, papayas, plátanos…and swimming in the river during the dry season was the best! I really miss the heavy rain and thunder too!

I live in Ecuador with an ecuadorian wife. Much of which you mention applies here. The trash/litter is #1 for me. Everyone is late for everything #2. Dogs #3. Motorcycles especially, but all traffic laws ignored #4. Because my wife is an ecuadorian wheeler and dealer, we don't get gringoed much. BUT, people are very kind here and young people especially, are much more kind and respectful than you will normally encounter in the US.

I feel your comment. I live in El Salvador with my husband and two kids. My kids and I were born in the US while my hubby was born here. When he retired from being a fire fighter in 2020, we decided to pack up and come here. I’d say the first year was rough as we acclimated but now, we feel like true Salvadorans. The whole running late think im pretty sure is cultural. Latin Americans seem to run on their own time. The stray dog issue is much better than it was when I first came here 20 years ago. People care for their animals now and our president has opened a government run vet when anything from a check-up to full surgery only costs $.25. Trash service just became a thing here within the last three years. It’s better but not perfect. And 100% traffic sucks! I laughed out loud getting my license because the “laws” here seem to be a suggestion only. The gringoing has kinda stopped at least in our town. They know I live here and I simply won’t but if they try and raise prices on me. I think most sellers at the market want to make at least some money vs nothing. I also am fluent in Spanish which throws them when they think I don’t understand but actually do.

Panamá has always had issues with how to dispose trash, there have been proyects, but every new government administration has been so corrupted and stole the millions of dollars addressed 14:00 to fix it.😢 The people of Panama, the poor ones are the victims of this corruption. Well, even if you get overcharged, the land, and the vehicles are affordable comparing to US. Back again to watch this video. I was as excited to see your Roastery my very first time in real life as your were your second time. Don't ask me how I know this... I just do. Sorry I arrived too early to meet you... I am not at all good with crowds and such, so maybe it was best for me to arrive on what was probably "The Roastery" slowest day since start up. I have long since finished the bag of coffee I bought. I can't tell you what a bummer it is to drink store bought bugs, leaves, unexpected and rotten bean coffee. I have not been to "home base" for months. I will get there soon. Soon enough probably to order another bag, maybe two. I worried if I bought too many bags it would get stale. How goofy is that thought?!?! LOl 😆 What I buy at Walmart or such store cannot compare at its best, freshest, hit the shelf, into my van and poured into my cup. Doh! What was thinking? I drank every drop of every cup of Morning Movement Coffee I brewed in my simple pour over system in my van kitchen. Morning Movement Coffee ☕️ is a bargain, drop for drop it is delicious. There is no comparison to any other. My "ticker" appreciates one great cup of coffee ☕️ to start my day. My "ticker" objects to anything more than half a cup full of .... the other stuff. If you ever have need of a Granny farmland at Lola's farm. I turn Shananavan to the south from north of 60° forevermore ❣️

Well when it comes to recycling the US isn’t much better. Most people don’t realize that less than 9% of recyclables ever gets recycled in our country even when people are doing the right things. The recyclables like laundry bottles etc, are just shipped over to 3rd world countries and they dump it on the beaches. It is disgusting and one thing I hat about the US. The holier than thou attitude.

In Panama believe it or not, we recycle and rehuse things, and when things break down such as an appliance, we try to fix it and we use it until its not good anymore, while here in California everything seems to be disposable. I have noticed a lot of things go to landfills because people buy new things all the time! You know new clothes every seasons, new cars and so on.

Just like you enjoy reminding people that animals are sacrificed when they are used for food….im here to remind you that other than bats and bees (pollinators), industrial farms are intent to eliminate everything which threatens a percentage point of profit to feed people like you. Newsflash….organic branding is a joke to the countries who have been feeding their soil for centuries and they laugh at the percentage of poison that “organic” allows 🙄. The trash situation has been getting much better over the last couple of decades. Panama has the lowest population density in Central America, so the people are used to having a lot of room. It has been a long road in getting the people to dispose of their trash properly, but it is getting better all the time. There was a time in the USA during the late 60's and early 70's that the same problem was experienced and that took a couple of decades and a lot of fines to change society.

I think I have said this before. If you have a mold or pollen allergy, you should use a HEPA filter. It will actually filter out the mold and pollen. It will blow air at you that should give you instant relief. However, you may literally have to put the exhaust directly in your face to get the best relief. When my allergies kick in, I just hug that dang thing during the night, but it is so great. Really, give it a try. When I get relief at night, I can make it through the day. Also, meds are a bit better in the day.

You can find responsibly grown produce at the Tuesday market. Not everyone uses the bad herbicides and pesticides, although it is a real problem throughout Panama.

Mold on the produce? I think that’s more of an issue where you guys are with all the rain. We are just outside of Penonomé and during the dry season we haven’t experienced this at all. You guys still get rain in Boquete during the dry season don’t you? One issue we do have about finding certain foods is finding gluten free stuff. You can get gluten free flour at Riba Smith for your own cooking and baking, but nothing in the Panaderías or restaurants near us in the interior. Still wouldn’t change our location choice at all though. Love it here!

We did a 16hr layover in Panama on our way to CR. We decided to rent a room rather than spend it in the airport. We ended up at a rooftop club. The food was incredible, the room was ok, the ride from the airport was sketchy as F. We went to some part of PC where they weren’t street lights but large groups of people hanging on the corner. I thought our driver was taking us to a place to be jacked. But I was wrong. We probably stood out as Americans but nobody gave us a second look. I wouldn’t walk around at night, but the people there seem chill and the area, by American standards, looks bad but it’s not the vibe you get while you’re there

They never said they weren't happy. They simply pointed out a few negatives. There would be negatives anywhere you live. Why would they continue building on the land if they were planning on leaving? They've said many times how much they love living there even though there are a few things they don't like.

I think they are just adding some drama to get attention, like when they made a big deal with the strikes we had, and as you notice, the tittle they use that they live in a “jungle” when we Panamanians know they are living in the mountains of Boquete near David where you can find anything. Boquete is a town where many US citizen and European live too.

I have been all over central and south America and I can tell you the regrets listed here in this video will be found in all the other places in the hemisphere including North America. Sure, they won't be the exact same ones but every place I have been has some down-side to go with the advantages. Also, they are not retirees and if you are a retiree, Panama has a great pensionado program that is probably the best in central or south America, plus for Americans, Panama is on the US dollar so there is no money conversion for you. Bottom line, Panama is a great place to live, just go and see if you fit with it or maybe another country is a better fit for you.

Take note of local prices, learn how to ask for them in Spanish regatear or bargaining is customary and unless they are dishonest, once you show people you understand, you can get the local prices. also show a real interest in learning about the foods your indigenous friends families grow and live off of, and how to cultivate them on your land.

I was very fortunate living in the Amazon of Peru. The locals knew me, I was called “The Satipo Gringo” but I never was charged more at the market. Now, buying land was a challenge, they wanted triple the price for a gringo! I got to the point I did not notice the garbage along the roads. Peru really cleaned up during Covid. Of course I had as little contact with Lima as possible. I have no regrets. I just accept their culture and live on. I lived aiming the Sendero Luminoso, but they never bothered me. But Covid drove me out, I’m now in Mexico.

You three are such a blessing. Today I am grateful for "You Tube" for sharing you all with the world. I did a little detour along a cross country road trip and stopped at the Roastery in Stowe. While I was sad to miss meeting you three, your partners are beautiful people as I imagine you all are. The Roastery is so simply beautiful in terms of design and decor. The openess encourages a layman such as I in terms of coffee roasting to appreciate the inticacies of producing the best coffee in the world. Totally enjoyed the experience. Enjoy family and friends in the USA 🇺🇸 Don't neglect to take time to be a little nomadic and get some R&R .

Funny you talk about trash in Panama. Have you been to Baltimore? Philly? Detroit? Some parts of NY, Boston, LA, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, etc etc? Or Even Seattle? Make Panama trash feel like nothing. Every city, every country has good things and bad things. I can tell you that at least when I’m overseas I know I won’t get shot at a shopping mall, a concert, a movie theater etc etc.. And I definitely know for sure that my children are safe going to a normal school. Also discrimination and racism still a huge problem in the United States! Definitely a great country but not even close to perfect.

have you considered wearing n95 masks to filter the pollen out during the dry season? If I am building something I always have to wear an n95 mask. Another thing you could do is wear enclosed safety glasses. I know that is way out there but if you want to keep crap out of your eyes that is the way to do it. On the farm who is going to see you but the family and close friends. Who cares right?

I was just thinking the same thing. Putting a few drops of essential oil on mask may stop the allergen. I too am allergic to molds. I keep my ozone air purifier on low in my dwelling. Also hydrogen peroxide kills mold. I ingest a few drops of HPeroxide in a glass of water daily.

Flonase nasal spray, Zyrtec you can take 20 mg rather than 10mg twice a day and singulair all together if you have severe allergies and the netty pot and saline mists all do great things for allergies and asthma. that’s from an ENT too so it’ll save you a Drs Appt with an overpriced specialist who will give you all over the counter scripts and these exact ones and directions.
