Thanks for not being afraid to expose John Deer's bullshit. You do it without even saying it. Replacing something like that every 2 years is a joke. Thanks for sharing.

As a deere tech yes. The fan drives themselves suck. But they do work very well when they are in good shape. But also rember that he puts a lot of hrs on that tractor. The years doesnt matter. The mechanical hours the tractor works is what matters.

Many heavy equipment manufacturers use hydraulic fan drives to operate variable speed fans. It also allows for the fan to be reversed to self clean. That requires a hydraulic pump, motor and valve. We didn't have many problems with them.

All the changes that the AG business has gone through, not a fan of the new stuff of today but, it's amazing to see how much things have changed over the years. Think I'll still stick with the older equipment. No clutches for the fan belt/water pump assembly, just 4 bolts and were far easier to R&R.

I find it much easier to muscle the fan driver onto the engine if you take the sheaves off first. It makes it smaller and lighter so it is easier to handle and easier to fit between the fan shroud and the engine. Then you can just slide the sheaves on after installing the driver on the engine.

There's a reason they stopped using the Vari-cool system on all the new equipment, they have been trouble from day one. The next time you remove a fan drive if you pull back the rubber boot the inner sheave will pull right off and it will be lighter and slip out of there easier.

Hello Andy, The next time you have to do a job like this one, you can use that mobile chain falls, one on each side of the tractor run one chain through the open space and the other one as normal. That way, the chain falls are doing the heavy lifting. The one through the open space you lift up and the other one let out the chain, should be able to set it right in. Love the videos.

That clutch must be a close replica of the old Horton fan clutch off of a silver 92 Detroit. It had to be replaced ever 5 to 6 month faithfully regardless. One winter we just ran it without the clutch completely. The front assembly of the clutch always had attendance to leak air. That is till Detroit finally put new or different seals in. That’s how the 92 got the name silver bullet [to the head] Detroit.

I don't know why tractor manufacturers don't make the fan cowlings in sections so we can remove part of them for access. They're so awkward to work around. Putting basically CVT-clutches in a dirty environment, like on the front of a farm tractor is the worst possible design choice they could have gone with.. The fan on the JD forwarder i maintain is hydraulically driven and therefore variable speed and also reversible and has now run for 17000 hours without any maintenance in a very dirty enviroment. Plus it moves the fan in front of the radiator so the front of the engine is open and roomy and accessing the belt is easy.
