I used to work in a wreaking yard, and we had a building just like your new one. We used the same good pallet racking you have and built an entire second story inside the building, but never touched the building. It stood alone. One end of the building to the other. And side to side. We built Isles and isles with walk ways in-between, all out of pallet racking. With racking upstairs too, We had a small electric fork left we used to put stuff upstairs. And a staircase. 2 buildings in one. Twice as much space as you have now.

I am in this same situation myself. I drag home pallets of stuff from auction after auction, just for the one thing I want. After years of swaps, ebay, & now marketplace, I realized there is no value in model A brake parts, &differentials. Now, because of the LS movement, I can't even GIVE sbc parts away... not even to machine shops. I've been selling and scrapping this spring.
@danielbuckner21675 ай бұрын
I see some sbc parts holding or increasing but only because there will always be a style of build for a sbc and also because of the cost to build an LS and with so many newer LSs having DOD/VVT issues SBCs are looking pretty affordble.

Buying & moving inventories of new parts is tough enough. Old used parts collected, inventoried, then moved again, sorted and re-inventoried…hard to do. I had a Start Firestar pistol which broke its extractor. Usually that would be a minor problem except: Star (a large, veteran Spanish manufacturer) went out of business; the importer Interarms suddenly closed because the owner died, and the parts supply dried up. Then SARCO, a very large consolidator, bought the entire Interarms inventory. So I called Interarms and tried to order my extractor. Good luck to that! SARCO had to move, sort, reorganize and inventory all that stuff! They called me back after three years, finally ready to take my order.

Actually you should not feel guilty about scraping stuff. There is always an imbalance between what parts are available and what is needed. Carrying inventory waiting for the market to come into balance is expensive. Plus there are a lot of replacement parts for breaks, electrical system, pumps, shocks, etc. No sense keeping them unless the part is working well or nos. Weeding out the collection is always good! You will find things you did not know you had. BTW if you implemented an inventory system (that tracks location of each item) you could optimize the space needed for storage. Eliminating the need to organize! For example you could store many disparate items in the same box/pallet.. You would not have to keep extra space for future purchases if things were organized by item.

It was stunning to watch this video knowing the topic. The sheer size of what you are renting is painfully obvious. Man it's going to be painful! It's also my least favorite thing to do. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. I hope you are hungry because that looks like a herd to me.
@jerrylong3815 ай бұрын
I had a plant manager that used that saying to death. The problem was he would have us to eat the heart, liver, and brain, then suddenly decide we needed to revive the elephant and make it live for another year. Or we were forced to eat the elephant with nothing but a spoon, and our bare teeth.

@allanrichards37525 ай бұрын
Maybe you have covered this in a pod cast but I haven't got enough time to watch a lot of the KZbin I subscribe to. How do you budget the picking you do? I see you doing a lot of work clearing buildings in estates and dragging out hard to move cars etc. The estate owners would have to pay a lot of money to get a team in to do this work so I am assuming you are getting a lot of this stuff for really low rates. If this is the case then it doesn't owe you a lot of money but you still have to put work into sorting it and putting it into a presentable state to sell. I think you need to be really brutal as the stuff comes in and prevent yourself getting over run with it.
@pappabob295 ай бұрын
Wow !!! So unfortunate !!! I HATE to throw stuff away unless it's totally "junk". A "rebuildable" starter or generator will sit on my shelf or I may actually rebuild it before I can bring myself to scrap it. I "updated" my 57 Chevy in 2017 with disc brakes, tilt column, power steering, four speed, etc. Used the good running 327/turbo 350 into a 40 Ford project. Still have the "good used" front brake assemblies, sold the steering column, rear diff, and we still have shelves of air ductwork, trim, misc parts from 57 chevy scrapped cars that my son went through since he got his 57 @ age 14. He's now 55 YO. We all know "there's nothing like the ORIGINAL stuff !! Do you have a "want list" for potential customers to enter into?? Sometimes people just need parts to repair things. Like I purchased a 40 Ford deluxe grill half that was broken at the top because I needed one of the lower grill "teeth" to repair my grill instead of paying $450.00 for a new repro. I certainly DON'T envy you your task. It's like cleaning and re-organizing the WORLDS LARGEST CLOSET !!! Like someone else already said "one bite at a time". ;o)
