Watching this again gives me that warm feeling inside of a time when everything was much simpler. Mum cooking a few Grillsteaks for tea with chips and beans while me and my brother sang "we hope it's chips, it's chips" at the dinner table. Ahhhh.

I woke up the other day with this ad running around my head and knew I'd find it somewhere! Couldn't recall for the life of me what it was for!! But as someone said - back then, ads were good!

a national treasure. "fried honion rings" is what's it's all about.

This is a classic now, but I remember when it was shown in virtually every ad break. I also remember my mum buying those "Steakhouse Grills", really slightly elongated Birdseye beef burgers costing abut 20p more a box! I've since moved to California, and the other day heard the Doris Day song on the radio, and started singing these words to it. My American wife was totally bewildered - she thought she was the only one to remember cheesy advertising lyrics from her childhood! Thanks for bringing back so many memories of an 80s childhood!

I can't think of that song now without "fried onion rings" in a thick Jamaican accent. I was singing it this morning while washing the dishes.

Why did the black man sing the "Fried Onion Rings" line? I love the 80's! Imagine the audition, "....erm Hi Mr Winston we'd like you to sing about jacket spuds and frozen peas, but our researchers have found that the GLC says that coloured people eat yams, and cook peas embedded in rice so we with The "Fried Onion rings line" would be a bit better suited to your ethnic demographic, is that ok? btw we are running short on cash so would family tickets to Ipi Tombi cover the TV royalties?

I really miss the decline of the british 'west indian' the flowery accent, style, the laughter and joy for life. What do we have instead? The moody monosyllabic 'Yeah bare tings' so on and so forth. I don't hear anyone in the Carribean talk like this.
