When I was a high school basketball player, we would take turns reffing 5 on 5 scrimmages during practice. 10 guys playing, 2 or 3 guys reffing. What I quickly learned is how hard is it to ref a basketball game. You have to watch and listen as carefully as you can, its a combination of anticipation and reaction, and I honestly can't believe that the refs in the NBA and college get it right as often as they do, especially given how much is at stake, and how intense fan bases can be. People have been complaining about refs in the NBA as long as I've been watching basketball. In the 90's the games used to be insanely unbalanced. I remember how absolutely perfect you had to be to even keep it close against the Celtics when they were playing in the Garden. They were an amazing team as well, but the refs certainly didn't hurt - they were chiefly responsible for the home team winning games for most teams. The NBA figured out that if fans came to see their team play in their home stadium and they won more often than not, that the fans would go home happy and it would strengthen the sport as a whole. Playoff teams would be ones which would be unstoppable at home and if you went .500 on the road, you were really good. In the last few years that kind of manipulation seems to have been greatly reduced. Home teams still win, but the calls are not as uniformly unbalanced. Now the way the game is called seems to be based more on initiatives set by the league office to create the game style which they feel is best for the league. When players like Trae Young and James Harden figured out how to "game the system" and get a lot of foul calls, they changed the system. Now its a back and forth between the players and the league, which will hopefully result in a fair, clean and fun to watch sport which will continue to cement the NBA as one of the most popular sports in the world. My biggest fear is that when they make a change, it is as drastic and obvious as this recent one has been. Just deciding that you suddenly aren't calling fouls anymore, leads to a dangerous situation where players can get hurt and fights can break out. We've seen a lot of key injuries occur in the last several weeks, and the new physical play emphasis can't be helping, especially when the league is also forcing the players to play in more games and not get as much rest as they might need. I don't want the NBA to become the NFL where we start getting third string players in the starting lineups due to a spike in injuries, and the star players careers have peaks of 2 years instead of 5+. Hopefully they can tweak things to create a fair, balanced and safe game environment, so we can all watch some of the world's more exciting athletes play what I think is the most exciting sport at its highest level. I don't buy into the idea that the NBA is bad right now, I think its the most exciting and talented that its ever been.

*Please keep sports competitive. Nobody wants to see a scripted NBA via SportsBetters paying the refs to make all these wild unsubstantiated calls. I like this change.*

Imagine if they had done this in 2016, they could’ve saved so many years of the NBA from this foul baiting nonsense. All they had to do was tell the refs to change the way they call fouls, and they really tried to make people believe that the offense of this era was that much better. Give me a break.

Another thing, I could give two fucks about gambling losses as a result of these referee changes. Draft kings, bet MGM, All these sports books should be able to exist, but as far as influence on these leagues? They can literally go fuck themselves.

Tbf the offensive is better then it's ever been. Everybody on a team can shoot nowadays

But I thought "TODAY'S PLAYERS ARE JUST SOOOOOOOO SKILLED?" Bahahaha

What point did you take from this video exactly?... They are. Its why fouls were too high. Guys are talented at everything, including getting fouls called. Which is different from flopping. A great wide receiver at times can only be stopped by pass interference. Someone like Luka is literally like if Randy Moss played in 1955. He cant be stopped, but no one even sees that. Honestly Lebron gets fouled constantly too. Big dominant dudes like Shaq were expected to just take fouls

Game has become watchable against post all star brake and i see way less blow outs and more competitive basketball which is the bar minimum the NBA should be offering. Games pre all star brake were awful and unwatchable and the NBA hit a low point.

Simply just low scoring games rn bc teams are playing hard every day now considering there’s only like 10 regular szn games left and teams are trying to get the highest seeding possible

Growing up watching baskets, had to switch sport causing how bad it was getting. When I did want to basket still I go with European basketball maybe less talent but 100% more entertaining

Ironically, that is even better for Nuggets who were already favorites and are at the bottom in FTA.
