We have been doing the woven weed barrier and like it for some things. It is great for keeping weeds under control. However, it leads to compaction of your soil, wherever it is laying. Also, if any organic material ends up on top of the woven fabric, weeds will sprout and the roots will go down through the woven fabric. If you don't deal with the weeds, they will over-take the fabric eventually. Mulch does not stay in place well on the woven fabric. If you have wind you will have trouble mulching on the fabric. The woven fabric frays and tangles and trips you or catches on tools. It adds micro-plastics to your soil! It is really hard to grow soil while using the woven fabric. It gets worse if you combine it with drip irrigation. We found our soil was pretty much devoid of life beneath woven fabric where only the plant or row was being watered. Anyway, after several years using it we are turning around and going back to weeding, trying to build our soils naturally and using living cover instead of the woven poly-plastic. Phil Nauta - "Building Soils Naturally". Highly recommended reading.

Oh thanks for this this Kevin! I will look into that book for sure. Gardening is very complicated. Someone asked me about raising livestock the other day and I said growing a garden is much harder than raising livestock! I think I just need to make it a habit to weed more often
@kevinrowbotham5452 жыл бұрын
Your garden looks great! You two are hard workers. The value of the kids helping outweighs everything else. You can eat all the thinning anyway! Now I did not say the tomatoes tied to the panels was a "terrible idea", I just said to watch it in case. They look fine so far the way you have them tied. Your peppers are lacking something or maybe over-watering? They should be loving the greenhouse. You could try foliar feeding them? Remember you want to water deeply and less often. The place is looking good guys. You're doing fine. See you next time.

Jenny, gardening is easy. Gardening well takes more effort and commitment. You can always weed more often. I have so much weeding to do...but it is great for the compost! Have a good week, cheers!

I also had a tomato volunteer in the compost a few years ago, it was delicious. I kept the seeds and have been planting it for several seasons as it is clearly happy in my climate. I suspect that you will have fewer weeds in the new beds based on the cardboard + compost not dig system. I don’t recall, is that what you did for the other beds? Cilantro is cool weather crop, you can grow it outside as well.

You are a SUPER woman/mom!!! Where do you find time to sleep, cook, housework, etc....you're good lol. Peppers love heat so I dont think your greenhouse is too warm. My peppers are in my greenhouse and theyre loving the heat! I wonder if yours are being pollinated? Tomatoes i believe are self pollinating but I dont think peppers are. Do you often leave the door open so pollinators can make their way to your plants? Maybe add a few pollinators attracting flowers in there, to help them come inside? Good luck, gardening is so much fun & so rewarding!

I was so excited to have my grandkids play a role in my garden that I made them their own elevated box to just dig in the dirt and 'plant' plastic flowers over and over again. I made that box when my oldest granddaughter was about 2.5 years old. It's been two years and this summer my granddaughter helped her mother plant her first vegetable garden in much the same way as your littles helped you. Thanks for sharing that part of your experience as it was a reminder of the joy that comes from teaching little ones about gardening.

Just had a thought for your pepper plants. I bought some a few weeks ago that were looking leggy and pale. I planted them with extra fertilizer and compost, and also gave them a good dose of liquid fertilizer around the base. Today I noticed not only have they gotten much greener, but also have grown leaves all along the lower part of the stem (they only had a couple sets at the top when I bought them). Maybe they just need an extra helping of fertilizer? Calcium/bonemeal and some fish fertilizer is what I top-dressed mine with. :D
