It's so hard to lose our goats. We've been fortunate to not have lost any Mama's yet, but this very week we had a very difficult birth with 2 kids that died before birth, sadly. We had to bring her to the vet also. She had antibiotics and she still doesn't seem totally well. It's been 4 days. I'm praying every day she continues to get better. Thank you for sharing this video. I cried for your loss. I've been crying all week actually. :( God Bless you and your family and your farm.

Crying with you! We lost two goats recently. Our Snickers, a first time mom, delivered two male babies. My daughter noticed that Snickers wasn't with the herd and found her in labor. The first baby was very small, seemed cold, and didn't appear to be alive. Snickers just finished giving birth to the second baby and was doing a great job of cleaning him off and tending to him. But she had no interest at all in the first baby. I dried the baby off and it was breathing but very weak. I tried to get Snickers to tend to him but she refused. I gave Snickers some grain and I did get the smaller baby to latch on and got a small amount of colostrum in him. I ended up milking mom and bottle feeding the small buckling. Honestly I didn't think he was going to make it but I was determined to try and I fervently prayed over him. The next day he was so much stronger and he could stand and was walking. We named him Lazarus and then the next day we noticed that he wasn't as interested in the bottle and he was sticking his tongue out funny. I also thought he was having a seizure. A few hours later he was gone. Then a few days later my daughter notices another one of our goats, Cookie, wasn't with the herd and was acting funny. She had delivered healthy twin girls a month before. Her temp was fine but her eyelids were not as red so we gave her some dewormer thinking it was a parasite problem. She did perk up, seemed better and was out with the herd again. We kept checking her, and all the others, and several days later she was gone. I found it interesting when the vet in your video started talking about the hay -- I couldn't hear him very clearly, but our neighbor just told us that the hay in our area is not doing well because of the drought and weather issues. I also read the other comments and I also think commercial feed may be causing havoc with our animals. Also I would love an update on your greenhouse. We built the same greenhouse and love it!!!! Many blessings!

I'm taking a break from breeding this next year. I'm so emotional worn down from goat illness, sudden deaths ( one died from shock from a jet flying to low) and I'm finding it very difficult to find new homes for my male babies. If anyone is in the Abilene Texas area I have 3 males that need homes! I'm milking 3 mamas at the moment and my hands are hurting so I'm putting them back in with the babies for a hand break.
@tjjurake3506 Жыл бұрын
My wrists hurt so badly when milking that I had to give it up. Milking with a machine takes away from the experience. I completely understand (as do most good goat keepers) how hard it is to find good homes for the kids. We had two does get very ill with carrying and delivering triplets and quads and I am wary of breeding them again because I don't want to lose them. Emotional people are often told to "toughen up" but they are the ones who care and make the world a better place.

@@tjjurake3506 So true. I'm trying to do this farm thing for my children. How to raise your own meat, diary and eggs. But it's so hard doing it all. Plus home educating them all 3. Farming is part of the education. But I just didnt realize how much money and time goes into it. Plus my husband is completely against it. I'm on the natural/ holistic side and he is on the eat whatever/ trust the doctors for whatever side. If I had emotional and physical support it would be easier for sure!!! But hey! I'm pretty strong now uptop throwing hay around and moving feed bags 😉 At least my children see I work hard for them even though some(most) nights I'm so exhausted.

I absolutely cried to this video as I had 2 momma pass the very same way and both had 3 babies each I still have 3 out of the 6 that were born as the first had 2 alive and 1 dead and after the vet came out she lost balance and smothered one of the other babies so I have 1 of hers and her name was Mandy she was a Nigerian momma. Next was Tigerlily 2 days later she had 2 alive and deceased and again she kept pushing and iy was at 3 am with no overnight vet care in outer town I did everything u just talked about and to no avail I lost that battle by 7ish in the morning so this kidding season has been the worst l. Tigerlily was a mini Nubian and both girls were in great health but no explanation of their deaths after the vets checked them after passing. So sending prayers from one goat mom to another I shed tears when I look at my babies.😢

I know nothing about goats other than having read one article, but I had preeclampsia at the end of my first pregnancy which became worse just after delivery (and that's not very common, usually it resolves after the delivery) and so I googled to see if goats can get that too. I'm not sure if the mechanisms are the same in goats as in humans because with goats they talk about toxemia, ketosis and a disturbed sugar metabolism, but I believe in humans, although they say they mostly do not know why some women get it, I have seen some studies sighting correlations when sugar is high in the diet. For humans they give magnesium to ward off seizures, but with goats, I'm not sure. One article talks about giving more grains, but I would think that our farmed livestock raised on grains would be more susceptible to such diseases as they would not normally be consuming so many grains in the wild I don't think. Similarly, humans are "fed" processed grains and sugars and that seems to be the root of many of our chronic illnesses. Sorry your little goat friend went to God a bit sooner than you expected. Hopefully she is doing well up there now and you'll see her again one day.
@DelcifromALifeofHeritage28 күн бұрын
I hope she's there too! I'd love to see her again! I've had multiple talks with God if there's limits to how many animals that can be waiting for me up there because I've got a lot of animals that could be there! The energy needs of a goat must be met during pregnancy and when they come into milk or there will be problems. The grain can be used to give them more energy during that time. And probably just like humans, sometimes there are goats predisposed to it.
