I know y'all probably aren't reading comments because people have been toxic so far, but one thing I do want to clear up is that consenting sex is completely fine to everyone in the hotel and definitely woth the show runners/ writers, but the problem is that Angel pushes his sexuality on to everyone without asking for consent. Just like the real world, some people are very sexual and that's fine, but it's not ok to turn non sexual activities into sexual ones without permission or consent, which is what Angel constantly does in order to make himself feel better whether it bothers anyone or not

Carmilla doesn't want to start a war with heaven because she's convinced that it won't be a war, it'll just be a genocide of all demons. She was able to kill a single angel, but she doesn't think that as a whole they can come anywhere close to winning. And even if they do, she doesn't want to risk her daughters becoming casualties.

The weird thing was that I didn't realize it was supposed to be a plot twist. Like, she uses the same weapon, she hates literally everything so-called "sinful" and she has a military background in a story where there is literally only one military. Since Charlie said "You train them the way you learned how to trust people" I honestly thought she knew. XD Mainly because the story doesn't try to provide an alternative explanation for any of this. So, it's like them being girlfiends-they just didn't say it yet.

Being trusting or naive doesn't mean you don't ask your date basic 1st date questions like "where are you from?" The "too trusting/naive" thing to do would be accepting anything Vaggie said no matter how little it explained why she was found bleeding to death in an alley with a black and white uniform on, holding a spear, and with two scars on her back. ROFL! That's what I mean by it being a bit strange that the story didn't provide an alternative explanation. They didn't want to write that Vaggie actively lied to her, but they also wanted some Act 2 Misunderstanding Drama. So, they went with Charlie, the half-angel, singing "Do angels have the same biology as me?" XD

Its just occurred to me that no one has commented about the fact that songs and singing actually has Power in hell. Lilith rose to power before the exterminations started by rallying her people through song. She’s actually a super famous singer in All of hell. Her “rebellion” (bringing her people together) is what kicked off the exterminations in the first place. So people busting into song is not common but important. As to your final critiques, a lot of your problems with the pacing can be pointed to Amazon forcing the team to cram everything into 8 episodes.

They weren't against sex as a concept, they were against Angel trying to get them to engage in it as group activity with no prompting. 🤷 Also I can agree that a lot of the lore of the universe is given outside the actual show, and I wouldn't ever expect the average viewer to know those things, even based on the limited information we are given (like Velvette talking about her model "pulling herself together"). That's one thing I get annoyed by people harping about in the comments, and I do think they could have explained certain things more in the show. But I think the main takeaway regarding "death" in this universe that is pretty plainly stated is that the exterminations lead to MASSIVE losses in hell (at the meeting Carmilla said they lost like 16% of the population). Even if we disregard the fact that sinners dying by other means leads to them respawning (by virtue of not being explicitly given that info), the most important thing to know is that the angels are super strong, thought to be invincible, and are responsible for tons and tons of deaths. That's why Carmilla doesn't want to risk escalating yearly exterminations into all-out war. Even though the other worldbuilding info is interesting to know, it's not the most vital info to be focusing on. It's mostly bonus content that was shared while the show was in development, when lore drops like that were essentially all fans had.

Why Carmilla do not want an all out war? 1. Without spoiling, its quite limited and heaven has endless supply. 2. The army for extermination is more of a company or batallion. Not the full might of heaven. 3. The Vees are just trying to provoke them to spearhead that war while we all know the 3 slacktivists will hide. If hell wins, the other overlord forces will be depleted and be backstabbed by the Vees forces in the aftermath. If heaven wins, all other overlords in the war will be dead and the Vees will claim everything in a power vacuum. 4. Ones the method to kill angels is revealed, there will be alot of backstabbing gonna happen. These overlords has thousands of souls in contract. Letting those people get the said method will give them opportunity to kill their contacted overlord even before the actual war begins. These are sinners. You cant expect them not to do things for their self interest and how screwed they had been for years or even decades by their overlords. Imagine how many demons gonna try to kill valentino if given the chance.

If it helps, Poison Ivy is voiced by Lake Bell, who also voices Black Widow in What If. Vaggie is Stephanie Beatriz, who was in Brooklyn 99 and also does the voice for the main character (Mirabelle) in Encanto. Stephanie also voices Lady Kima (the paladin of short stature who’s a member of the Council of Tal’Dorei) on The Legend Of Vox Machina. Their speaking voices (Stephanie and Lake Bell/Poison Ivy) are similar in timbre and pitch, completely understandable to confuse the two badass ladies by speaking voice alone, but wanted to mention that it isn’t Poison Ivy, since y’all mentioned having a hard time getting that idea out of your minds.

They're fairly critical, including some of the same criticisms you make, but they also pick up on a lot of the 'good things' and general messaging of the show that you often seem to miss. Maybe you'd find them enlightening as to why so many people have a different take on the show than you do, I don't know. Although the pilot reaction is mostly focused on the indie art and animation.

the overlords arent actually the gods of sin, they're more just like themes to give them personality/a timeframe of when they died, but there are actually more of what you're describing in the sister series "Helluva Boss" (which is on youtube and takes place in the same universe), where there are separate rings of hell, each one being ruled by a separate entity which are basically the kings of sin (lust, greed, gluttony, etc.) by listening to your critiques, i definitely believe you would like helluva boss A LOT MORE as it takes the time to delve into characters, their motivations, relationships, etc while hazbin is very plot-focused and doesnt dwell too much on character with the time its given, helluva is the complete opposite and has the characters and how they interact with the world as its main focus

If demons are killed normally they will respawn eventually. Holy weapons basically destroy the soul and you get scattered, not being able to respawn, essentially dying.

@SeanTanktop Oh, you two are soooo close to getting the fact that this show *is* deeper than it looks on the surface. For example, the BDSM club: You and Morgan pointed out that Angel was absolutely right. Trust is all-important in BDSM. The problem with the scenario was Vaggie, in my opinion. She was, as Morgan pointed out, that very American "Eeewww! Kinky sex is icky! But ruthless violence is awesome and noble." Vaggie is *super* judgemental and Charlie was eager to just get Vaggie out of the room. To me Charlie seemed less bothered by the BDSM and more bothered by the fact that it was upsetting her girlfriend. The question is, *why* is Vaggie so judgemental (but so okay with violence?) Turns out there is a reason but to tell you that would be a spoiler. Just keep the question in the back of your minds. Also, Charlie's thing is that she embodies the fish-out-of-water trope. Unlike Drawn Together's Princess Clara who looked and sounded like a Disney princess but was actually an awful person, Charlie Morningstar is the real thing. She is a Disney princess who just happened to be born in Hell. Everyone in Hell is kind of shitty to each other because that's the way things are and always have been (hence the vulgar insults thrown around as everyday conversation). Charlie is trying to ask, "Couldn't we just be decent to each other instead?" Not a bad sentiment but everyone in Hell believes she's a fool for thinking that. Her own girlfriend doesn't seem to really believe in the mission. She supports it because it's Charlie's project and she loves and supports Charlie but that's about it, at this point in the story. Again; Is Hell really so bad and, if so, why? Why does everyone assume that Heaven is so virtuous? We've met the crown Princess of Hell and Adam, the leader of the Heavenly Host and they each sure seem like they ought to be in the other's place. Interesting, no?

@SeanTanktop Yeah! I love this show but its pacing isn't great. You eventually get episodes like episode 4 and episode 6 which start to address some of the very things y'all have wondered about, but the journey there is slow. For example, everyone just assumes that Heaven is good and Hell is bad because that's what we (and the characters) have always been told. Personally, I'd like to have seen that assumption questioned more often during this season before it is addressed directly. I'm hoping season 2 will have tighter writing, especially where issues like Vaggie's judgementalism are concerned so we can revisit things like the BDSM room but with a new perspective. The main theme is transformation and growth. I want to see more of that from Charlie and Vaggie as well.

They DON'T KNOW what good enough means or how to get into heaven, this is the first time anyone's ever tried anything like this in that universe. They're just guessing at what they think goodness means. It was discussed in the first couple episodes but will be more clear later

I feel like you guys might not be seeing sinners in the show can be multifaceted. Take Carmela for example on one hand she is a loving mother who will do anything to protect her children and those close to her. On the other hand she is also an arms dealer and is probably responsible for the deaths of countless people both when she was alive and now in hell. People aren’t black and white but it seams like the rules for heaven are if we’re to believe Adam. So you steal a loaf of bread, stealing is a sin. But you do it to feed your starving family. Or let’s take it up a notch you kill someone who’s trying to kill you. It’s self defense sure but it’s also a sin a major sin if we only take the Ten Commandments into consideration. What if you kill one person to save, two, or ten, or a thousand. Punishment by the letter of sin without taking into account circumstances is incredibly hypocritical. Which is what this show delves into. That and the idea of an eternal punishment or reward for a finite mistake or accomplishment. Once you’re dead or in heaven and hell it’s not like you still being judged so of course people give into their baser instincts. Like angel said in the first episode, “we’re in hell tots, that’s kinda the end of the road ain’t it”. So no one but Charlie and the people at the hotel feel it’s even possible to become better so why try. When your in such a bad place you might as well give in and lay in the bed you made. Not to mention people who may not have done all that bad of a thing to end up in hell are thrown in with the truly evil people. Imagine hell like prison you have petty offenders like a guy who stole car stereo’s mixed up with rapists and serial killers. So those people thrive while out little thief has to become worse just to survive. Show any weakness and you become a target that’s why people don’t respect Charlie even though she is the princess of hell.

@@karlwilker579 ehhhh Harley Quinn is closer to venture brothers in the earlier seasons I'd argue. It falls off pretty bad in S4 though, this is better at getting you invested in the characters rather than just "sweatlrs are the joke" like HQ leans too hard on later. It feels like the language is just the setting to me at least, I hardly spot it watching on my own. Some characters here never swear btw, except for rare occasions to emphasize something. There's a couple I have in mind that I want to see if it gets noticed.

I think is by design that the two main characters are the most boring ones so far, since there is such a big cast and new characters keep being introduced we are juxtaposing Charlie, who sang the Sorry song, vs Carmilla who is singing about choosing to not care about hell and it’s denizens because all she cares about are her daughters and her best friend. So one one side we see Charlie and her camp that doesn’t understand what being good means and how one soul can get redemption and on the other side we see all these other morally gray sinners that maybe on our eyes can be redeemed under our own standards of what being a good person means.

So Carlimma and Vaggie’s song (s) is/are week. Camlilla is really interesting and has potential but so far doesn’t have much going for her. Carmilla can get away with this because she is a side character that interests with the plot. Vaggie does not have this excuse. She is a but lacking in personality and depth but is central. I really want them to do more with Vaggie.
