Brandy is the barmaid. She is in love with a sailor who brings her expensive gifts and who is fond of her, but he makes it known that he lives a sailor's life and probably will never marry her.

20 years Navy here. Brandy was girl serving whiskey and wine to the sailors who sit around and talk about their homes. She loved a sailor who came to port frequently he gave her a locket with a braided chain made of finest silver from the north of Spain meaning she meant something special to him. But he never lied, no harbor was his home, but she loved him anyway and walk home alone every night after work. I've sa in bars across the world and talked about my home with the other sailors I was with. This story rings true to life.

It's a lovely story; because he was honest, and knew he could not give her the life she wanted. That is unselfish love in the larger sense of it; he was not into a quickie fix for himself, which could be hurtful to her.

Thank you both for selecting this wonderful track. This gorgeous, meaningful song compelled me to visit Spain. I was on the coast of Northern Spain imaging the ships of the 1400s. The docks and taverns and the sea and the many unrequited loves. Its really a sad love story. Try to hear the studio stereo version.

Oh guys you are a riot. I was in high school when this came out lol. We used to hang out at the beach every summer in Rhode Island. Just picture walking on the boardwalk watching the ships go By lol and listening to this. Pure Heaven. Brady was a bartender in one of the coast towns. She fell in love with a sailor who came in every time he was in port. She loved him but he always told her the truth that he was leaving and couldn’t stay. 🥲

I see too many people who give reviews and they stop the song every ten seconds, and I'm thinking "how can you get a feel for the song when you're chopping it up into a dozen pieces, usually just as the song is peaking!" So props to you for letting the song play out! 👍

He may have actually been putting HER first. Maybe; it was not his job only; he also, may not have been into settling down. When he said "what a fine wife you could be"; we can't assume, he was talking about himself specifically.

Gotta dig into the lyrics it's all about the girl and the guy she'll never have At night, when the bars close down Brandy walks through a silent town And loves a man who's not around She still can hear him say The Sailor says "Brandy, you're a fine girl What a good wife you would be But my life, my love, my lady Is the sea..." Along with that there's the bridge Yes Brandy used to watch his eyes when he told his sailing stories She could feel the ocean fall and rise, she felt its rage and glory But he had always told the truth, Lord, he was an honest man And Brandy does her best to understand... Yep...all about the relationship, not the drink.

He's torn between a single life he always knew and a barmaid that he thinks will give him a life that he needs! But the song is written in a way that if you don't think, you would think it's about liquor. But if you do think, you can tell it's about something deeper! It's written in a way much like the song Tennessee Whiskey !
