He wasn't stuck between her and drinking. He was stuck between her and the sea. He was a sailor. He loved being on the sea. That was his home. So he only saw her when his ship visited the port where she worked in a bar serving drinks to the sailors.

You’re so right, you can see what you’re hearing. But it wasn’t about his whiskey, his love was the sea. 🌊⚓️

Congratulations! You've discovered my abdolute favorite one-hit wonderful of the 70's. The art of storytelling has been lost. So many great storytelling songs were written back then. I highly recommend "Operator," by Jim Croce, or "Wild World" by Cat Steven's, or "Taxi," by Harry Chapin. All of these artists have a bunch of great songs that tell great stories.

"Jimmy Loves Maryanne" The other hit by Looking Glass. - NOT DRINKING - The Sea. - "My life, My love, and My lady Is the Sea". - and he had made it clear from the beginning, - "because he was an honest man". - Reminds me of a friend who was a "Confirmed Bachelor " that always said that the 3 words that would never come out of his mouth - "I Love you".

My favorite also. The feeling it leaves you with as our english teacher would call it, is a bitter sweet one. Gets me every time still. Well placed nut bowl, didnt play her. I can live with that ending.

No, not alcohol - he loved his life as a sailor - the song tells you: his life, his lover, his lady, is the sea. He knew he wouldn't make a good husband because he'd never be there.

I was named after this song. My mom used to call the local radio station every year on my birthday to request this song for me to hear before going to school in the morning. I went to school with several others named Brandy, Brandie, or Brandi, as well, with all of us named after this song.

I know how your Mom felt. I named my 1st "Amanda", because I loved the song of the same title. I knew, when I was 11 years old, what my first daughter's name was going to be.

Actually they reached number 33 on the Billboard top forty in 1973 with "Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne." Strictly speaking, they were not a one hit wonder.

Music should transport you into a realm of imagination and wonder. If you can't see what the artist is conveying and only see what you want, that's all good too because it means the artist has got your attention and are having an experience you wouldn't otherwise have. Good for you.

His first love was his job, of being on a ship at sea, but Brany wanted him for a Husband. While he loved Brandy, he wasn't willing to give up his love of the sea. I'd have taken "Brandy, she's a fine girl." Lol.

Fun note: Barry Manilow's song "Mandy" was a cover of a song called "Brandy". They changed the name to Mandy because of this song. There's A recording of Barry singing the song where he says 'Brandy...oops! ' 😂

Sorry ladies, that's not how it works with guys like that. Like As If He Didn't Have Other Girls in Other Ports and That Wasn't The Reason Why He Didn't Want to Settle Down With Her and Get Married. He Wasn't Ready to Settle Down. I don't care how much he loved being a sailor. Its just an excuse and a way of protecting her feelings. No man in his right mind would trade a girl like that for life on the sea. He didn't want to settle down and commit himself to one woman. That's how it works, ladies. Either a man is ready to settle down and be with one woman or he isnt. He probably regretted it later on. She was a fine girl, and he missed out for sure.

A big hit from Looking Glass in 1972 making it to number 1 on the charts. The lead singer has a unique voice. This was their only big hit. They did only release 2 other singles Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne and Golden Rainbow but both never were big hits. Actually to me they didn't sound that bad.
