It's a ballast resistor. The coil will only be 7V or 9V. When you crank the motor because of starter load it drops the voltage. While cranking the resistor is bypassed which in turn give you a better spark for starting. If you bypass the resistor all the time it will burn the coil out. And burn the points out very fast as well.

The resistor drops the voltage to the coil when running. You get full battery voltage while cranking over the engine when voltage drops due to the load of the starter. It gives you a stronger spark for starting. Once the engine is running they lower the voltage with the reisitor. Without the resistor the coil won't last very long.

The reason you have 12volts on each side of resistor is because it reduces amps NOT voltage. In a pinch it’s possible to connect a light in place of a resistor. You know lights get hot when operating, it’s because the lights are using and burning amperage. Just like the resistor. Hope this helps, love your channel & look forward to videos.

Everyone did a good job explaining the ballast resister , if you're going to stick with the straight six I would suggest getting the chevy gm hei distributor setup (I put it on my boat inline 6) ... Pertronix can burn up if you leave the key on by accident and then you're dead in the water... The gm hei is an all in one package with coil in cap and all it needs is One wire , plus if you want to run a tac it has an output port for that as well... Great episode !! It's tough buffing with a wool pad and they are messy LOL !!!

Ballast Resistor on Ignition coil: They were needed back in the old days of mechanical points distributors. The points and coil is designed to run on 9 volts and the ballast resistor drops the extra voltage from the 12 volt electrical system. The ballast resistor was switched out of the system while the starter was engaged because the starter draw when cranking would drop the voltage down to the required 9 volts without it. Had the points and coil been designed to run on 12 volts instead of 9, the ballast resistor would not have been needed, but starting would be more difficult because the system would then be running lower than the design voltage due to the starter draw when the engine was being cranked and the spark would not be as hot.

the ballast resistor is there to reduce the voltage to the coil when running, you are supposed to have 12VDC to the coil directly from the ignition switch when starting but then once the vehicle is running you get 9VDC to the coil. This gives you a stronger spark when starting and a reduced drain when running.

Hi Robbie The purpose of a ballast resistor is to protect the ignition coil in older ignition systems. It can be eliminated by installing a high-performance ignition system, removing it will cause the coil to burn out The reason they get so hot is because you are adding resistance to the amperage flowing through the wire. It’s perfectly normal. Any old mechanic would’ve known exactly what was wrong with whiskers because it would run as long as the key was in the start position which bypasses the ballast resistor. Anyway, good job in finding it you shouldn’t have any more trouble they are fairly reliable for years and years.

The resistor converts 12v to 6v to 9v to the coil ( resistance=heat). Get rid of it and get a 12v coil and a Pertronics points delete. While starting the resistor is bypassed via the starter giving the coil 12v minus cranking amps( 11volts or so) that's why it was only running while cranking.

Multiple vehicle manufacturers decided to use 9v ignition coils for their 12v cars, which requires a resistor on the 12v power line to make the 9v at the coil. Supposedly, since starting an engine draws a ton of power, the voltage drop during engine cranking can be worked around by bypassing the ballast resistor so a coil that needs 9v gets the full 9v even when the starter is drawing lots of power. Modern cars have other ways to work around the voltage drop of the starter so they no longer use a ballast resistor.

The resistor limits voltage to the coil during run, the little post on the starter solenoid next to the cranking post runs back up to the coil so the coil gets a full 12 volts during cranking then during run voltage from ignition runs through the resistor and cuts coil voltage to approximately 7 volts to save the coil from excess heat, ford normally didn't run this resistor they ran a 40 ohm wire to accomplish this, that's more than likely a chevy resistor but all's good now!!

The resistor drops the voltage on older coils down a few volts (normally somewhere between 7-10v across the coil while running)- but there should be an extra wire from either the ignition or the starter solenoid (Ford usually on the starter) that bypasses the resistor while cranking to give it more voltage (as the battery voltage 'droops' during cranking, the coil is still getting its full voltage it normally would, so giving a better spark and easier starting)

The resistor keeps the ignition coil from burning up when connected directly to 12 volts (14.2V running). the ignition switch bypasses the resistor ONLY during start operation then reinserts it during the RUN mode, the reason is it gives a hotter spark during the start sequence. if you do a resistor DELETE plan on replacing the coil soon.

The OG way of doing this was with a 50:50 mix or kerosene and water. Shake it up, apply with a rag, wipe it off. The heavier the coat the shinier it gets. Water will bead and it lasts a decent amount of time. Paint, chrome, rubber, whatever. This is how the NYPD would prepare the limos used in ticker tape parades back in the day, as they would sit around in a garage for weeks or months between use and would be covered with dust.

The resistor is in the run circuit to allow for a non-resister low voltage ignition coil (8V), protects the points from burning and the resistor is bypassed while starting (by the Solenoid or FORD Steel me junction) for a nice bright spark during starting voltage drop (while starting). Starter draw (Draws down the Battery voltage) causes momentary voltage drop (10V?) while starting. Hence, some Genuis thought it would be a good idea to run the ignition all the time at the starting voltage and I suppose he was right. Anyways, Robby you knew this! Thanx Robby, Hill Billy, Demory and Kids! Good Show as usual. Remember: A/C Delco Distributor Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet... The works in the Cap, Get rid of everything, One wire, all done and off to the Races.

On ignitions with points, 12 volts is necessary to start the engine, but once the engine is running, it only needs 9 volts or so to keep going. When the switch is turned to 'start', the resistor is bypassed, but when it is returned to 'on,' the resistor is added to the circuit. This reduces sparking and makes the points last longer. Change your distributor to an electronic system and eliminate the points. It makes everything better.

The ballast resistor is mainly used to compensate for the voltage drop during cranking. Cold weather effects this even more. Battery potential drops to about 10 volts while cranking under normal conditions. The ignition system on older points engines is designed to run normally around 10v even though its a 12v system. The resistor cuts battery voltage down to about the 9-10v range during normal operation. The resistor is bypassed during cranking so the ignition system can get full potential of around 10v while cranking. That's why it would run during crank, but not in 'run'. The operating voltage of the ignition system always has full potential whether in run or crank mode. This is most important for cold weather starting.
