I have studied concrete a little in materials science as part of a design course. We were doing some basic experiments with it like putting it under compression, tension, vibration and torque loading. Even without re-bar it's pretty good under compression. For tension and side loads it needs re-bar. More to the point tensioned re-bar. It's not good under vibration loading at all. However torque loads are the worst of the lot unless you use re-bar that is tensioned so much it boggles the mind.

Try reinforcing the rebar by welding some cross members every four to six inches, so the rebar doesn't twist. Wrap chicken wire mesh around the rebar. Try using Quikrete or whatever similar product you have. Leave the PVC on and drive at high speed for half an hour. Remove the PVC and see if the concrete is still in one piece. If it is, drive some more and see how long it lasts. Have fun!!

Torsional forces (twisting as the engine applies power) will have had an effect on causing the concrete to crack, and the centrifugal forces when it's spinning cause the lumps to break off and go byebye... :P

Have you thought about making a Propshaft with Rubber in Torsion? Like the suspension systems as designed by Englishman Sir Alex Moulton dcd.? 2 tubes, one inside the other, with the space between taken up by a liquid layer of rubber which then hardens. Then you have the 2 tubes bonded to each other. It would give a very smooth take up and drive, insulated as it is by the rubber. Has proved to be extremely durable in suspension systems as the inner tube is in torsion to the outer tube. Have a go - you may have to experiment with the density of the rubber you use.

I believe that I've come up with something that might bear looking into. Once again, replace the drive shaft but with reinforcing rod, laid straight, bundled and then twisted into a spiral of the right length and welded, piece by piece to complete the unit. If the rod is thin enough, it could be braided and not welded since it would enter and leave the pattern in both directions.

wouldn't make a difference with the way they did things. you can clearly see the driveshaft is not centered the moment they start moving. being out of center is harder on everything which in turn also puts more stress on the driveshaft.

Concrete has close to no tensile strength. Torsion is similar to tension, so this won't work at all. Maybe if you somehow pre tension the shaft it might work. Now I'm going to watch the video.

@vincentrobinette1507
@vincentrobinette1507 2 жыл бұрын
The rebar didn't have the torsional stiffness to protect the concrete. concrete is strong in beam and compression, not tension, or sheer caused by torsion. Re enforced concrete actually has pretty good beam strength, because of the tensile strength offered by the rebar. as well as compression strength, meaning that the vibration wasn't the problem. It was the torque. The rebar twisted easily, which is what crumbled the concrete.
@lol_surprisefoo
@lol_surprisefoo 2 жыл бұрын
Construction building codes used call for 28 day testing to determining if the mix design of the concrete has achieved its intended *compressive* strength (for example 4000 psi @ 28 days). Some specifications call for 56 day testing, but that is exceptionally rare. Notice I stated *compressive strength*.... This is in contrast to the rotational or torsional forces that your prop shaft experienced. You may find it interesting that concrete continues to gain compressive strength as it ages. Even hundreds and hundreds of years after it was mixed and placed.

If you ever want to make a "real" reinforced concrete propshaft, rest assured that you can make one that would be quite permanent if you consult a professional. Some basic tips for stronger concrete, for just anyone: use as little water as possible, ideally have your reinforcements interlocked or welded at 90 degrees and/or use a mesh. For projects requiring a lot of strength, select the right formulation of concrete and the correct size aggregate, and almost definitely consult an expert and carefulyl read the instructions on the concrete you are choosing. For desperate projects where you need quite a lot of strength but can afford for it to not last and don't have access to all the right materials, still use minimal water, and use wood as your reinforcement material, and ideally just nail or screw boards together any way you can.

28 days while kept wet gets about 90% total strength. but gains no strength once it dries out. either way the result would be the same but it could have been slightly stronger if cured properly. adding a bunch of hoops to make a sort of rebar cage would also help a lot

I think the reason it seemed bent was because the rebar was welded so that it was off center. It could of been the weld location or perhaps the rebar was not straight down the middle. Technically the rebar is only acting as a way to secure it to the u-joints. Its kind of cheating if you really want to test just concrete. You don't really need the rebar though, that's for forces that pull, tensile forces. Since the shaft doesn't receive forces along its axis anyway, you could just have a metal plate with some shorter rods or bolts. That way most of the shaft would be just concrete. It's not a big difference I guess... either the concrete can handle the tensile forces from spinning or it can't, rebar or not. I might not know what I'm talking about... but I did do half of a civil engineering degree so, I also might have a small chance of not actually being wrong lol

As soon as he said concrete i knew it wouldn't work. Any sideways forces or rotation induces expansion force in concrete, which is very weak against them. In the same way glass can be both strong and brittle at the same time. Concrete is very strong under compression force though which is why they use long bridges weighing tons. 🤔

I believe the propshaft should of had cups made of rings of rebar to each end and tied rings spanned all across the propshaft like small pillars used for signs on the street, and its diameter should have been slightly larger than the original, at least 1.5 times. That concrete was really bad too, it was more like mortar without aggregate, i would use a generic 3500-4000psi real concrete to get the results. Great experiment anyways.
