Coming off their interesting 2022 NBA offseason, the Boston Celtics have opened the regular season as arguably one of the hottest teams in the entire NBA. Jayson Tatum & Jaylen Brown are having career years so far, the Celtics new head coach Joe Mazzulla looks sharp in his role to start, and they are still waiting for Robert Williams III to return from injury. But even with all of this, there’s still an even more ridiculous feat the Boston Celtics are accomplishing.
Aside from their all-star duo in JT & JB, the C’s clearly have one of the best supporting casts in the NBA. From Derrick White, to Al Horford, Marcus Smart, the Timelord, etc, they’ve all done their part to push the Celtics to where they sit atop the league. But it’s been the ridiculous 3 point shooting we’ve seen from Boston that has been on a historic pace. And while all of their top players are contributing to this, their deeper role players in Grant Williams, Sam Hauser, Payton Pritchard, Malcolm Brogdon & even Luke Kornet have been playing at a level Celtics fans might not have expected.
With the Celtics currently on pace to put up the best offense in a season that’s ever been seen in NBA history, along with a defense that was once just the best in the league and is waiting for their anchor to return, Boston is looking dangerous as we look further into the 2023 NBA season.
This video includes 2022 Boston Celtics highlights, also including topics like Boston celtics 2022, celtics highlights, celtics vs kings, celtics offense highlights, robert williams injury, celtics injury news, celtics news today, celtics trade rumors, sam hauser celtics highlights, jayson tatum highlights, jaylen brown highlights, cetlics mavs, celtics press conference, celtics first take, celtics practice, timelord celtics, blake griffin celtics, derrick white highlights, etc, which I do not own ANY of the rights to whatsoever, as these are intended to be used under the guidelines of fair use through KZbin.

@@lawlor2925 you can build a wall, if the role players hit open threes it’s a lot harder to play like that. But I agree tho, if I’m on that Cs team then I would believe we can take anyone in the playoffs. East or West No disrespect to any other team. The warriors looking good-ish now, but still not like last year. Luka still needs help. The healthy Clippers don’t exist outside of 2k. Denver is still meh but will probably be better. I think that a fair portion of that is due to the fact that somebody finally got through Marcus Smart's thick skull, and manage to convince him that he cannot shoot. I think Coach Joe brought something different to the table and I love it. I love that he let them workout how to handle runs instead of bailing them out with timeouts. Been a Celtics fan for a long time and this is my favorite team thats been put together in a while.

Fans keep saying they love when mazzulla doesn’t call timeouts, but that’s only because the team is shooting so well they can play through it. In a playoff game if this strategy doesn’t work, people will be flipping out for him to call a timeout. It’s a result based reaction. He doesn’t call a timeout and the team ends the run themselves? = “wow great job by coach!” He doesn’t call a timeout and the Celtics can’t end the other teams run? = “why won’t he call a timeout??!!!!”

@@Fent- If the team wasn’t playing well I’d still call it good coaching. In the regular season let your players work through it and figure it out. There’s obviously a fine line between letting your team get demolished and letting them work through their issues on their own, but when you have Tatum and Brown you can trust them to work it out rather than get demolished more often than not. The thing about the Celtics is that they're not necessarily living in dying by the three, but it's more so a result of early penetration and ball movement. By getting the defense worried about free runs to the paint, you have a situation where you can leave shooters open for three and because everyone's confident shooting it's going in.

A big part of the ball movement success is a commitment to the drive and pop. In past years, JB especially, the Celtics would often force a shot when driving to the hoop. This year, with the plethora of shooters on the floor, they have been making excellent decisions going to the hoop which leads to those open 3s you mentioned. Combined with elite finishing by the primary ball handlers, it is creating space all over the court. Everything is so balanced. It's a delight to watch. I actually think their ORTG can IMPROVE when Timelord's passing, pick and roll, and lob prowess unlocks another aspect of their game.

Good report. Agree with so many of your points. Big diff between this and last years team was to do with the dreaded comeback from good teams like Kings or Mavs after they absorb brutal blast fro Celtics power offense. Cs have a way of allowing cruise control to welcome a team back into the game. It is truly astonishing to watch Pritchard Sam and Kornet come in like piranha to throw A dozen on the board and end up the games with plus 20 impact on half that of play time. That was unimaginable last year, or at the start of what sure seemed like it would be an escape from dysfunction year. Gotta spread the credit and love around to everyone for that. Dont see that kind of maturity out of professional sports too often. Just lovin it. Keep up good work

The Cs are an Offensive Juggernaut for the reason you mentioned. The entire team, and I mean THE ENTIRE TEAM can shoot the 3 ball at an efficient clip. They average 39% from 3 with Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum shooting well below their average from 3. The paint is wide open so slashers like JB and Brogdon can have a field day. That's why even on days where the Cs cant hit their 3s, they still drop 120+ points. And if slashing doesn't work, The Celtics have the highest Assist ratio, and the highest Assist/Turnover in the league by a wide margin, to just pass the ball out after breaking down the defense. I think this is what a perfectly balance Basketball team looks like and will probably become the formula in the future. Golden State started the trend of small ball shooting, and Houston made the high volume three point shooting for a team a staple. Now Boston have combined the two while adding taller, defensive, and more athletic wings/forwards, while also having depth so crazy that you have starter level players coming off the bench. That's actually crazy.

The kings are putting up 40 3 point shots a game as well and sit 3rd on attempts and the Celtics stopped Huerter who was shooting over 45 percent 3 point shooting before that game. That game against the Kings really showed how the Celtics defense running off players from the three point line was effective. They also stayed on their man with man vs man defense. Unlike the kings who doubled the ball handler or Brown or Tatum and that's when Pritchard and kornet knocked those 3 point shots down. P.s. I'm a Kings fan since they moved to Sacramento but originally a Celtics fan before 1986. So I still root for the Celtics if the kings are out of the playoffs which has been most the time 😂.

Somehow every player on the Celtics got BETTER this offseason. I think they “bought in” and said it’s “Championship or Bust,” and “this is OUR year.” The leadership on this team is outstanding. Marcus Smart, Al Horford, now adding Blake Griffin as a vet, and Tatum and Brown elevating their games to a new stratosphere- this team is so good, and if any key player is out, they truly have a “next man up” mentality. Tatum sits out and Brown goes for 30+, Horford sits out and Blake steps up. Houser, Pritchard, White, Grant Williams… not only they can they shoot and make shots when Tatum and Brown are doubled, but they can make plays as well. Right now, there is not a more complete team on offense. And their defense is suffocating. This is the best team in the NBA with the best player (Tatum), and #2 is light years away from them. The crazy thing, if you watch the Celtics as so do, is Tatum could go for 40 a night and win the scoring title, or MVP, but it’s clear he wants MORE, and has put in the time, effort, and energy to become one of the Top 3-5 players in the league, and he has the poise of a Kobe or Michael or young Lebron. He owns the League, despite whatever Luka, Ja, or Giannis are doing, understand this, Tatum is straight winning games for the Celtics and their record proves this.

what's promising ab the celtics defense is that these guys have moments where they plant their feet and try on defense. what I mean by this is when they're actively switching on assignments and recovering they can actually clamp down any team despite not having TimeLord due to their insane defensive versatility. BUT doing the help covers and switching is probably really taxing on the players so I think they just relax for certain periods and crank up the defense when needed. When they get TimeLord back tho they'll probably go back to the "funnel the ball to Rob" since it's a lot less taxing than picking everybody up with a good stnace and switching everything. If you want examples go watch the nuggets game during the 3/4th QT or the kings game just yesterday.

Biggest difference that I've noticed this year is that the Celtics are focused early on which I assume they will be even more focused after the All-Star break. Prediction: they will do well, I don't know about the playoffs but if they keep playing like this they will definitely get to the finals as long as everybody is healthy & they're playing the way they've been playing & they stay focused, they will definitely get to the finals they just have to keep focused this way so that they will be the team winning this year

To me it looks like they took part of how the Warriors beat them with all that cutting and running around. That's probably the biggest difference. In the past it was more standing around. Sometimes players might go cold a little and then act scared. They're lettin' em fly. 😍I love it!!! I think we have a good shot and I really want em to get a ring esp. older guys...or guys that's been with us for a while. Gotta stay healthy and keep that running around and cutting,etc..

JT and JB making those next steps. Everyone has been relatively healthy and the taste of defeat has them hungry. Adding Brogdon to the mix, one of the most efficient shooters in the game, only adds to it. Brad Stevens is the guy and is in his role for a reason.

what made the Celtics so good this year is that they didn't chase big names in the offseason. they already have the all-star duo and they focused on building around it rather than dumping all of their money into one big name. getting derrick white last year, brogdon, griffin, and more have all plugged the holes they had rather than throwing in a new star that they have to build around. beautiful stuff

Yeah, biggest difference for me is confidence bro like they’re not only firing off threes they’re doing it with conviction there’s no hesitation and I see a lot less hanging of the heads when they miss a shot I don’t get a call I don’t see them drooping and arguing with officials so far this season, that was a big big problem for them last year especially Jayson Tatum I think Tatum and Brown are now sure fire seasoned veterans who no longer have the ups and downs of their game. I think their game has now reached the point where they have a very high floor and you’re never gonna see them have 12 or 13 point games the minimum you’re gonna get a 20 to 25 point night out of each one of them and most likely 30 when you have 2-30 points scores That have a very deep arsenal of moves that can score from all three levels, and you have a bench like they have, especially with the addition of Sam Hauser, who is in my opinion one of the best three point shooters in the league and will continue to emerge as a great role player. As long as he can keep his defense formidable enough to keep him on the floor at all times, Prichard has not gotten the same minutes as last year but it hasn’t been needed either. He has a definite weapon off the bench as long as health doesn’t become an issue I don’t see the Celtics winning less than 55 games minimum possibly 60+ and I love them in a seven game series against anybody including Golden State. I think the experience they got last year in that seven game series with Golden State as much as a missed opportunity as it was, I think they absolutely extracted what they needed to from that and will build on it. No doubt in this postseason upcoming they should dominate.

For anyone that has watched the team grow through last year and into this year, it's clear that this can be sustained. More 3PA's come with the fact that they're also up in points in the paint, drives, movement, cutting. SO MANY of those 3PA's are wide open, so the percentages should be expected to naturally be higher than "typical". If the Celtics can maintain all the other stuff, the movement/cutting/driving/kicking, then those 3PA's will continue to be wide open. Sky's the limit for an offense operating at such a high level. Once the defense slowly ratchets up through the season, you could be looking at a sustained net rating >10. Pretty hard to lose if you can keep that up!

The one great thing about Joe Mazzula is he makes rotational adjustments mid game that make a big impact. Yes, they shoot a lot of 3s but Tatum is attacking much more when needed, then Jaylen usually follows. Grant Williams was also awful against Sac, in comes Kornet and the game quickly becomes a blowout. Great calls by Mazzula.

Biggest change I've seen so far watching every game is the unselfishness and chemistry of the players. Lots of team ball. Lots of cuts toward the basket. Lots of players stepping up and putting the team on their backs when there's a slump. If the Jays are cold, throw in Hauser and PP to knock down some 3s to steal the momentum back. Celtics teams of the past few years typically start out hot, go cold in the 2nd, hot in the 3rd, and collapse in the 4th. Players would jog up the court. These guys run. Bench is playing well, with Hauser being the biggest surprise. Can't wait to see Time Lord back and that top tier Defense come back. They literally broke the Bucks with their defense last year

Celtics take a lot of 3 but that's because all of their starters are really good at playing in the paint and finishing. In the first pistons game where the C's only shot 21% from 3 the pistons were getting hammered in the paint and kept fouling the Celtics. It's either you let them score in the paint which they can do at will and possibly foul or they take the 3. Any of the Celtics starters players can shoot 3's and finish. If they all can shoot they all will shoot and you can't really defend that.

And that’s the crazy part anoht their league leading 3 pt makes and top 5 shooting. The jays are both shooting the 3 below their career averages. And it’s not like either of them are ice cold from 3 or anything, but both of them have had entire playoff runs shooting 40 percent from 3 and full seaosns shooting between 38-41 percent. And I think right now they are both at like 35 percent? I think honeslty both are shooting CLOSE to a career low from 3. And that’s such a good sign when you think anoht the long term possibly of this teams shooting maintaining. Some people wpold say that the other shooters will regress to their norm, but then so will Tatum and brown! I think one of the coolest things for Tatum this year as well as brown is how they’ve both been able to score career highs and bring it on many nights where their 3 ball isn’t great. I feel like Tatum hasn’t had a GOOD 3 ball night in like 2 weeks yet he’s been posting 30 a game still. And Jaylen has been making like 1 3 or so for a lot of gmars and still dominating himself. Jaylen is shooting 59 percent from mid range and using the spaced floor more to his advantage on drives, ultilzong his burst and assertiveness and strength and finishing ability to get looks at the rim, and Tatum has been doing the same but in his own way, using his advanced handle and IQ getting past his defenders to the cup and forcing them to put him on the FT line, as well as continuously working on his short floaters as well as acrobatic finishing off the glass. I think it’s just sort of ironic and it’s a beautiful cyclical cycle. It’s not the teams stars, who are both shooters, who are leading this shooting revelation. The Celtics offense comes from putting shooters everywhere, then their stars trusting the shooters, the shooters making shots, which in turn makes the paint more open for the stars to drive, which in turn makes the D have to collapse more often leaving the shooters open, for the stars to then kick out to, and it just goes on asn on from there as the defenses scramble to contain what recently beat them, the Celtics just counter move the other direction. It’s so beautiful. You stay home on shooters, you got 2 ELITE scorers getting to go 1 on 1. You bring extra help on the star scorers, they’ve embraced finding the open man leading to ball movement and wide open 3s. It’s just impossible to stop it’s amazing.
