The move from Denver to Missouri happened, but not the way I had planned. Thankfully Mom was there to back me up and everything eventually made it to our new home in Missouri. My tools are stuffed in a detached garage and the commercial shop space is still in process. I'll keep you posted as that situation develops.
Since I'm moving from one of the driest cities in the country to one of the more humid cities, I needed to finally take rust prevention seriously. I came across a cool product called Carbon Method and I'm hoping this will be a game-changer for rust prevention. It works by coating the surface with a single layer of graphite, providing a slick surface that's protected from rush for months at a time. Does it work as well as they say? Let's find out together! Check them out at CarbonMethod.com. carbonmethod.com/
To reiterate what I said in the video, I purchased this product with my own money. After talking with the owner, we decided to run an ad together with the caveat being I'd report back in a few months after my tools were exposed to high humidity.

I do not comment a lot, but you are THE guy that teached me woodworking. A little bit over 5 years ago, as a foreigner living in China and missing deeply my sweet homecountry of France, I had to do something other than working and sleeping (and boozing on week-ends...) to keep my sanity. Your videos from your early days gave me the courage to start playing around with wood. Starting with hand tools in one of the room of my 15th floor flat, then eventually one band-saw, then a Sawstop. All this drove me to move to a ground floor flat, where I totally illegaly build a small shed, and continued to expand my tool collection and did a whole lot of furniture for this flat. 3 kids later, I am still in China in my first detached home with a nice garage. And in 2 years max, because raising kids in China is simply not something you should be doing, I will be moving back to France, and hopefully get my Homestead with woodland and my final workshop. All the while thinking of you and Nicole for your great gift you gave me with sharing your knowledge. You really saved me from insanity in China. Big kisses to you 4. Love you guys!

Cordialement.

I'm a woodworker in Missouri and had lots of trouble with moisture problems and rust. I recently built a dedicated shop in a new 30x30 detached garage. I installed a 2 ton minisplit and have a dehumidifier set to auto at 35%. I finally have no issues with rust. The problem I've found is how quickly the humidity here swings along with the temps. Good luck in Missouri good hvac is your best bet.

Severe angst, sleep deprivation, and unforecast expenses ensued, but eventually the family, the house, and the shop survived. Johnson paste wax lived 43 years in Florida less than 20 miles to salt water. Nothing better unless you Flood Penetrol paint additive. Sounds crazy but once applied it dries to a very hard super super paper thin coating that rust can not penetrate. Great for non wear surfaces. Wax on any wear surface. I insulated my small garage woodshop in Grand Forks ND, and got a forced-air kerosene heater which brought the temp from -20 to 70 in about twenty minutes. Cast-iron tools do NOT warm up that quickly, and when the AF finally moved me to arid Utah, I spent a lot of time with an orbit sander, cleaning up the rust on my tablesaw. Hopefully I'll never have to move again; my back aches just watching this video! Anxious to see the new shop.

This past spring, we had a couple cool weeks where the temp in the shop was in the mid 50's. Then summer hit with a day in the upper 80's and high humidity. I opened the garage door, the hot, humid air swept in and instantly condensed on every piece of cool metal. I literally watched areas of my table saw bloom with rust as I frantically grabbed some rags and tried to keep the condensation wiped off any cast iron.

If you're going to open up your shop on a humid day again and you plan ahead, like having to move equipment in and out, what I do is take some of your sawdust from your shopvac or extractor and sprinkle a good inch thick layer on every raw steal surface, I know it's messy, but vacuuming that up is far better than spending a copious amount time getting those surfaces back to usable condition, the moisture will settle on the wood and not your steel, think of it like a vapor barrier. Just an FYI.

My Houston, TX shop has no air conditioner. I found the best way to deal with high humidity is to cover the cast iron surfaces every evening (or while not in use) with dedicated machine covers. A pain, but effective.

DFW here. Ditto on covers, use canvas tarps cut/sewn for each piece. Humidity what a pain, we also do silicone molds and resin casting; run a large dehumidifier in that part of the shop while working. AC’d wood/VMC side of the shop (Mitsubishi/Trane Minisplit- it’s about double needed cap, which is ok w Mitsu/Tranes). Yearly routine of cleaning and applying T9/Boshield on all the equipment. Always seem to get rust on front fence rail of PM2000 no matter what. Most likely hand sweat judging by rust mark shapes and locations. If this fancy stuff doesn’t transfer to the work pieces and it holds up for years at a time, I’d give it a shot on tools surfaces. Might go ahead and order a small bit (if they have trial-type sizes) and try on that pesky rail area.

Sold our house the first day it was posted and purchased our new (to us ) house the first week of looking. Moved ourselves in two trips with a tailgate truck over a month. Never an easy task what you are doing. Hope the new product works out. Always looking how to combat rust. Even in our dry heat environment metal left unprotected will and does rust, as I learned the hard way. It could be a good answer to the rust problem. For anyone who is moving in the future. All those shipping silicagel packettes that come in stuff you buy, keep them in an airtight container… keep saving them. When you move put some in eachbox. As much as possible use clear plastic bins. Number the bins on 3+ sides. Have a notebook that has a numbered list. each number gets a description of what is in the box. If moving to a humid area try to store your boxes in an air conditioned place. Good luck. I have moved 26 times, this method works.

Welcome to Missouri, YES it is humid and HOT. But it is a place of joy for raising a family. Thanks for all of your shop ideas over the years. My wife and I moved in 2020 from St. Louis across the Missouri River to St. Charles so I could convert my small woodworking shop into a three car garage wood shop to keep me happy and busy in retirement. Many of your ideas from over the years on how to set up a small/mid size shop are being incorporated into my new shop. If I could only finish the projects my wife and daughter have for me, I could get back to creating my shop. Oh well, life and family go hand in hand and I'll get there sooner or later. Updates so far have included T1-11 paneling, vertical lumber storage with iron pipe separators and today we got the Mini-Split installed and working, so much for the heat and humidity :)

Over the years, I have never had great success with anti-rust products. Eventually -- in spite of my best efforts -- the rust demon showed up in my eastern Iowa shop. However, for the past three years, I have achieved victory by installing a floor model dehumidifier. It runs 24 / 7 and consistently pulls the humidity level down to about 25%. Yes, I still apply a good coat of an anti-rust product, but now I do so with confidence. I keep my shop (30' X 64') closed up and can see a bump up in humidity when someone opens the door. The dehumidifier soon pulls the humidity level back down. Air conditioning will help in the summer, but does little good in cooler weather. I usually get about a two-year life out of a dehumidifier unit running 24 / 7.

What made you decide 25% humidity? Asking because I’m in a complete inner discussion about getting a humidifier for my space (I read the the ideal percentage is between 30-50) right now it seats around 20%. I can only assume is better for the wood but not ideal for my health

All the best in your new WW(WOOD WHISPER) PAD Mark&Fam. Very interesting product demo and a fair one at that. I am a retired Ph.D. material scientist. I suspect this product is based on what is now commercially available multilayer Graphene with an appropriate film forming polymer coating. Assuming It is what I think it is , will transform many industrial products but still very expensive to produce in large scale to the levels of purity that will differentiate (cost effectively) from all other technologies that are in existence now.

Congrats on the move. I like the “real time” review. Cool product. I could see your eyes get glassy leaving your shop and could feel the emotion on my end! Endings suck.

I have massive respect for Carbon Method, they really have confidence in their product. I don't live in very humid environment but I find that paste wax doesn't hold up very well, plus if I open the garage door and water drips on the tools they rust. I can't wait to see how your tools look when they're unpacked so I can order some of the stuff!

Love your videos. My garage looks like yours- packed full. Welcome to the humid weather. I live in Pensacola, FL where the dew point is in the low to mid 70’s 7 to 8 months a year. Here finding a local hardwood dealer with rough cut wood has been a challenge. Just a week ago I found Peeples Exotic Wood. I’ve made my first visit to their shop and found they have a good selection and can order just about anything. I’m looking forward to seeing you build your new shop.

Out of all the places! I would have never expected you to move to my home state! Hope the move went well! I’m in the St Louis Area (Wright City to be exact) I personally just use paste wax on everything and I have never had a problem with rust in an unconditioned shop in the summer. Except for sweat! The effect of sweat needs to be tested! But this product sounds interesting What region of Missouri are you in? No need for specifics, just curious. It doesn’t rain here all the time, but you’ll get a mix of every season that’s for sure. Also, we have sugarfire here! It’s our favorite BBQ place!

I just applied this product two weeks ago to my tools. I bought a brand new, fully loaded Sawstop 3hp PCS. I live in southeast Alabama and I fight with rust and oxidation constantly. In an effort to not have the same problems with this very expensive table saw, I decided if I’m going to spend that much on the saw, why not try this Carbon Method. So far…..AWESOME!!! Only 2 weeks in and I see a MASSIVE night and day difference over the traditional T9 Boeshield and paste wax protection processes. My saw is super slick, and hasn’t shown a single blemish. I used to get small finger print oxidation blemishes and rust from everything, even after treating it within days and weeks. So far my brand new Sawstop surface looks brand new. I have every bit of confidence that this product will be everything the company says it will be. Definitely watch the application video produced by Carbon Method before applying it.

I had a year between shops in a move from one northern Virginia place to another (hardly a dry environment). The rustprone tools (drill press, bandsaw, and jointer) sat in an unconditioned storage cubicle for that time protected by T-9 Boshield and paste wax. Only damage was one small rust stain on the bandsaw table.

Don't envy you at all. In 53 years my wife and I moved 14 times. Military transfers and jobs after the military. Thankfully no large shop to move, just started woodworking shortly before the last move so not much equipment to move. Have a well equipped basement shop now but the next move will be into the urn with my wife, and the kids can deal with the shop. Did I mention I hate moving, hope everything works out well with yours.

Seems like it was only a year or two ago you made your last move. The better 3/4 is dreading the day we move out of Crematoria (Texas) and head to the Charlotte area. My shop is woodworking construction and auto shop so lots of odd big and heavy stuff to move as well as a few cars... Congrats on the latest move and I hope all goes well.

Welcome to the South Mark! We're excited to have you and your family as our neighbors. Down here, rust prevention is a constant battle. For many years, have used frequent coatings of Johnson's paste wax (Usually after a full day of woodworking, or every couple of weeks, if I haven't been able to get to the tools), and then covered all the large tools with a moving blanket to prevent air and moisture getting at the surface. Has worked well over the years, but would be nice to have something to supplement the paste wax as an "underlayer" for extra insurance, so very interested to see your results with the Carbon Method. Again, welcome, and let us know if there's anything we can do to make you feel more at home.

If you have air conditioning the humidity should be somewhat controlled. I like gadgets though, so if the Carbon Method holds up against a drop of sweat I will be first in line to buy the big kit. Glad you have completed the move and hope y'all will be happy being close to the relatives. Having to "go" to work will be a huge change, I hope you will be satisfied with that too.
