Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 1,000,000 subscribers on KZbin. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Yay!!!! Welcome to my state and specifically my county - Los Angeles! There are so many great things to do here in SoCal and I can't wait for you both to discover them and share it with all of us! Just walking along the boardwalk in Santa Monica or Venice... OH OH OH the Venice Canals! The gardens, The Huntington, the Rose Garden at Exposition Park and all the museums there, Santa Monica Pier, Rose Hills Memorial Park Rose Garden, of course the Observatory, Ferndale Park with nice wide paths that Shane can easily maneuver, Descanso Gardens, The Getty along with our many other museums... oh the fun you will have discovering the many places we have here! Our traffic is horrendous and the heat can be unbearable at times but we don't have snow unless you drive 1 to 3 hours to find it. I hope you love my state half as much as I do!

My wife is from Minneota MN and has been in the San Diego area for 36 years. She loves Minnesota in the summer. That is when she visits. I am a so cal native that would love to move out of cal due to the higher cost of living. So, MN may be the place for us to live for about 4 months, but one beautiful thing about so cal is obviously the weather. You will be able to get around much easier. I also know you are here for work as well. I think you two are making the right decision at this time. Yes, black widows are in areas of the home that are cold and dark. We see our occasional black widows only once or twice a year. They typically do not want to come out to bite you. Just be careful and do not stick your fingers in areas that are covered without either wearing gloves or using other tools. In northern cal, the brown recluse spider is a lot more problematic. We live out in riverside county, but I lived in the northern areas of LA. The issue with all of so cal is the traffic. Just leave quite early when you need to be there. There is a stress factor that you can minimize when leaving earlier that mapquest. Im glad you two are here in LA. My wife and I welcome you. The beaches are beautiful, the mountains are beautiful.

And the traffic while it only takes you two and a half hours to go 20 mi exclamation point and the governor is taxing everybody to death. Don't forget that that is 30 years behind schedule and 900 million over budget. And if you're bored you can head up to San Francisco or where they rob you blind right on the street! Congrats on the move! I was bit by a black widow when I lived in Indiana and 48 hours later, it was very feverish and hurt a fair amount. But take comfort in the fact that if it happens to you, you really won't die and some meds make it all better! Also, they go out of their way to hide from people normally so I'd be surprised if you see them there more than we do most other places.

Welcome to California! You will love Huntington Museum! Be sure to make reservations IN ADVANCED for their tea room. It is lovely place to eat, but always busy. I hope you get to visit the Columbia Memorial Space Center. It is a small, but mighty museum. It is located on the location where Apollo 11 was built. Yes, 80% of the Apollo and Shuttle missions were built in Downey, California. Some of the engineers who worked on Apollo 11 are still with us, talk to the director Ben and he can get you in contact with them. They would be great to interview for your channel. The sequoias are unworldly beautiful. I am not sure how ADA it is. It would be helpful to others to find out. Both Getty museums are gorgeous! Glad you made the move and welcome!

I lived in Nevada for 10 years. Black widows are no joke. You will adapt - just never pick up a rock, or reach into anything without looking first. Once that habit becomes second nature, you won't give it another thought. I used to keep hair spray in the house to "freeze" bugs until I could kill them. You will need to watch out for rattlers too. :(

I swear by this item - for roach, flea, spider control indoors . . . I've been using it in my house(s) in FL, AZ, CA, NM, AR for better than 30 years! It's economical, and effective . . . it's called "Pest Offense" . . . I got it (originally) from a company in FL . . . don't know if they are still operating/supplying it, but it's the BEST product I've ever had. How/why does it work? It plugs in to an indoor outlet, and emits a pulse in the home wiring - that incapacitates the bug's ability to reproduce. While waiting for this amazing gadget to work? I used/use Bengal spray on the outside foundation, and door jambs, once a year...if/when the bugs cross the 'line'? they die very quickly. Best wishes to you in your new home/environment . . . been there/done that! LOL

We use a pest control service here in LA. They come and spray non-toxic stuff around the perimeter of the house every three months (and in between if we need it), which has really limited the amount of spiders and insects we find in our home. Termites are another problem that everybody deals with in CA.

So happy for you both. California is supposed to be a wonderful place. On my visits there the people have been very friendly and accepting. The weather will definitely agree with you, though, once acclimated, you may find normal temperatures in the winter are cold, if only because of the humidity. Being from Saskatchewan, we were there one Christmas, and it was a typical 72 degrees, so we were in shorts, t-shirts and such, while the Californians were wearing heavy jackets. Looking forward to your announcements and the content from the new home.

also some good information to have: black widows actually aren’t as dangerous as they are made out to be. they very rarely bite-unless you are a threat to them-and their bite is not usually fatal. unless you are allergic or the bite gets infected, i believe. also in general, as im sure most people already know, spiders are always good to keep around, and if they are around your house then you are actually getting free protection from pests. and, if you really do not want a spider in or around your house, you can always just take a cup and a piece of paper and relocate them. but remember that they are there for a reason, and more will be back.

Welcome to California! Much love from Pasadena, CA. I really am glad you are highlighting a lot of the positive qualities of Southern California. Wonderful people. Wonderful food. Wonderful vibes. I hope you discover all the cool gems here. From an amazing dog beach in Huntington Beach. To a beautiful arboretum/mall in Arcadia. To the Monrovia nightmarket. To amusement parks such as Disneyland in Anaheim. The list can go on forever. Do note gas prices have been fluctuating a lot lately lol. Hope yall have a wonderful time living here nonetheless.

I spent most of my life in L.A. Vacuum your furniture about once a month. Pull away from the wall and take cushions off and vacuum underside. The brown recluse spider is the issue where I now live. I vacuum the furniture and crevices once a month. I hope you enjoy L.A.

I moved from Illinois to Washington state and I hate the rain in Washington state in the chilly, windy twilight like Illinois. It’s cold and wet and windy. Terrible winters… So I moved to Fresno California for a travel therapy assignment and loved it. It’s not perfect Tera but I could count on one hand how many times it rained in a year… I love the sunrise is sunset, so I love hot weather I love, so many things about California a lot more bugs I encountered bugs and I’m a very clean person but lots of bugs of my apartments that I’ve never seen before. That was a little difficult but I miss hot sunny California all the time I live in Washington state again only because my grandchild lives out here. If he wasn’t around, I would be living back in central California… I would go to the coast in California for little trips which is always nice and refreshing, but I could never live in LA. I couldn’t deal with the traffic and the smog… But it’s a great place to visit… Have a great time getting settled in.

Spiders are deterred by mint. Buy some peppermint or spearmint oil (both have worked great for me) and a spray bottle. Fill the bottle mostly with water and then add a decent number of drops of the oil. Shake it up. I've never measured the amounts but I'm sure there's great advice online. Spray that around the baseboards, doorways that lead to outside, windowsills, entrances to attics and basement, and vents once a week or so. Spiders will avoid entering your home. You can add additional oils to alter the scent a bit if you don't want it to be straight mint. I typically add things like orange, rose, clove, or whatever fits the season so my house smells lovely. It's a cheap way to deter spiders and other bugs while making your home smell nice. :)

I make it strong lol. I put 30 drops of peppermint, 30 of clove oil, and if I intend to spray my clothes along with the home I add lavender for extra protection against mosquitoes. Peppermint, lavender, and rosemary smells less strong than the mixture with clove. Clove doesn’t protect me against mosquitoes but it helps keep bugs from the home. You can also look into something called VetsBest or VetriScience home and cat flea spray. It has the plant essence in it as opposed to essential oils and it’s safe to put on pets, us, and our home. It smells strongly of clove but it’s not too much.

I was listening to a podcast interview of Kathy Kinney who is best known for her character of Mimi on the Drew Carey show.) She said that while filming the movie _Arachnophobia_ the animal trainers used Lemon Pledge. They would place two parallel lines of it, placing the spiders in-between. Apparently they hate it and never cross over. 🤷‍♂️ Idk. Could be something to look into.

There's always something along the coast or parks to keep you busy. Your family will love to come visit. I think your blogs will be very creative and fun.

I am thinking of moving to Orange County for the same reason, cold here in MN! My problem is, I love my house here in MN and would like to take it with me. I did find a community I like so maybe I travel back and forth to see if I can establish a life in CA. I don't think a house in CA is in the cards, but likely a condo. Congratulations! I hope it all goes well for you.

Wow, welcome to the West Coast!!! I kind of thought that when Cole and Charisma moved, to LA you might join them, for the same business opportunities (and because you said that how much Shane does not like the cold weather in Minnesota.) I love your collabs with Cole and Charisma problem I’m looking forward to seeing more of you all together. Also, I lived in Southern California for 30+ years (in Seattle now) raised two kids there and had many pets and nobody ever was hurt by a black widow, though we saw lots of them. They probably won’t hang around inside your house after you’ve moved in and there’s a lot more commotion but you might still find them outside in sheds and things like that. Black widows are the only spiders I squish instead of gently escorting outside.

Welcome to LA! This just so happens to be spider mating season... Just be careful reaching underneath chairs and tables. Not only are there black widows, but also brown widows. The big ones with the crazy webs are the least of your worries. As you can see, living in LA has given me a PhD in Spiderology. Have fun!

Brown widows are the worst! When we lived in San Diego they always built their webs and laid eggs in the places we frequented (mail box, outdoor furniture, hand rails, etc).
