The biggest issue I see is that even though PS5/XSX games release at $70, a large amount of them go on sale down to $50, then $30-40 a few months later. Even switch games that released 1-2 years ago are still $60. Prices never go down and physical games started to go up even during the switch generation. We'll see $70 games stick around without a price drop in sight and people will be a lot more selective

@@lacosta0892Yeah I was curious and checked the prices and was shocked that both Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are STILL $60 after pretty much being launch titles in 2017 (although Odyssey did come out later that year). I remember back in the N64 and GameCube days Nintendo would significantly lower the price on what it would call "Nintendo Selects" games, which were usually old titles that were really popular like Ocarina of Time and Mario 64. I really wish they still did that.

14:24 And nowadays, a lot of us weren’t around in the 90’s, so it goes from “Wow, that would’ve been so much more expensive in the 90’s!” To “Why does this game cost so much?!” For the people born in the 2000’s and higher, there’s no point of reference to make their judgement off of. They’ve only ever seen $60 and lower. And all they can see now is that games are getting more expensive, and for many of them that price hike alone is enough to drive them away.

At least on pc I can emulate and get games on sale. I too miss my 3DS games that were cheap. I loved to go get cheap titles then exchange them for other cheap titles at gamestop. Coincidentally one of the best cheap games I recall playing as a kid was a title called Tigerz. I am shocked Nintendo’s games aren’t $70. I argue most gamers have too many games. Nintendo games are already largely budget titles. It’s absurd that Nintendo games are only 60 honestly. It’s this sort of thinking which WILL contribute to the all digital future even more so. People won’t want to pay the cost and believe the inflation which is ALWAYS there with a fiat currency regardless of who’s in office. Again - it amazes me that Nintendo games are JUST 60. Amazing. Go back to the 90s and look at game prices and then on top of that adjust for inflation. 😅

We don't need to go back 30 years. Just compared to 2017 (i.e. when the Switch came out) a 60$ dollar game is the equivalent of spending 77$ dollars today. I'm not saying that I want prices to rise, but if I want to buy something for the same price I would have paid for it 5 years ago I can go to Costco and buy a hotdog, but that's about it. Nintendo may be less inclined to inflate budgets for games, but no one can deny having to boost their games specs for more powerful hardware is going to be more expensive than developing for the equivalent of a tablet from 2015.

My theory for why Zelda was $70 specifically is that Nintendo's trying to do more variable pricing structures for games, so that cheaper to produce games get better margins, and they can maximize on holiday sales for way larger games, like TOTK. TOTK was released early in the year, and would be able to then EASILY become a holiday or summer sale hit, as its then old enough to get good discounts. It increases the longevity of the games in terms of pricing and market value, because it makes sales much more appealing. 15% off a $60 game looks worse than the same price on a $70 game, even if its a year old, especially during the holidays. Adds value to the game LONG after its released. Then, say, making more simple remasters 40 or 50 means they can pump them out, and still see good profit. They do the least amount of work for the most benefit.

For me, the price of the game is not even the major factor anymore - it's the time that is required to play it and its quality. As you said, there are a lot of games not worth even 60, but I would even pay 100 for a game I know I want to finish. The number of games worth finishing is shrinking the last 10 years too, so it's not even a major problem for me. Western game studios make it very easy to ignore their games these days.

I think the money is on the screen especially with Isaac's 10 years of development updates and Skyrim's fantastic writing especially for the side quests (the Dark Brotherhood is one of my favorite questlines in any RPG). I think the problem is that so often we can only identify this in retrospect. Nintendo has always, *always* been the greediest of all the major console companies. They never reduce the price on their first party games, even after over half a decade. They charge hundreds of dollars for a glorified tablet. They force you to restart your digital library every time a new console comes out, because they refuse to allow backwards compatibility. When the switch 2 comes out it will probably be more than $400 and it won’t let you use your digital library of switch games. Even though Xbox and PlayStation have had backwards compatibility for ages now, Nintendo refuses to get with the times. They release overpriced, underpowered consoles, and refuse to be consumer friendly. Boycotting Nintendo until further notice

We don't know to what extent that means, but it implies backwards compatability. And saying Nintendo refuses backwards compatability is insane. The Wii u played wii games, the wii played GameCube. The 3ds played ds. The ds played gba. The gba played Gameboy games. They had consistently been backwards compatible since the turn of the century. The only one not is the switch, which wouldn't make sense to be backwards compatible. Both the Wii U and 3ds had two screens, one of which being a touch screen. It would be incredibly clunky to try to make that work on one screen. Plus the wii u has disks about the same size as the switch itself. And the switch itself is a glorified tablet, but, unfortunately, a tablet and a controller will be around $300 today anyway. And for the $60 games never getting price drops, yeah you're right. But we have no one to blame but ourselves for that. People keep buying them no matter the price so there's really no reason to lower it. People need to actually not buy them until they go on sale if they want Nintendo to drop the prices. So in that case, good luck on your boycott. More people should be like you and put their money where their mouth is if they actually want prices to go down.

I wouldn’t say greed is the right word here. To me greedy would be charging that much money for a lazy product, like several of the pokemon games. For the most part Nintendo’s first party games deliver for the price. At least all the ones I’ve bought I haven’t felt like I didn’t get my money’s worth. And sales are a very slippery slope. Like Arlo said in the video he will wait for games to go on sale, even a year! People nowadays are more willing to wait long periods of time if they believe a game will go on sale. I believe this has to do with the fact that time is going by faster than in the past and there being countless more things you can pass the time with now. Rereleasing an old game for the same price as a new nintedo title is where I think they are a little off the mark. I wanted to play that game another code but the price has really kept me from it. But again they are a publicly traded company and are at the behest of those shareholders. Compared to the vast majority of companies, like all these streaming platforms for example who are hiking their prices up to the moon, Nintendo is pretty tame.

I understand your point, but you are completely wrong. Tears of the Kingdom was not the first $70 Nintendo game. Back in the SNES days Chrono Trigger was $70. If you want to say "first party Nintendo games only" Killer Instinct for the N64 retailed for $75 originally, with MANY Nintendo 3rd party games being $70 or even $80. I am not saying I want to pay more, and in fact, games are the one area that does not necessarily need the price to rise. The truth is because it costs practically nothing to make a single game distribution, the key is recovering development costs. As such, it is better to simply sell the game at the "best" price point. If you can sell a much larger quantity at $60, you would be stupid (and incorrect) to say you NEED to sell a game for $70. You would make more money at $60. But if Nintendo convinces enough people they "need" to sell at that price, or enough people buy at that price, that is going to be the new normal.

I think part of the reason Totk was 70 was also to pay for the costs of 32GB switch carts. Nintendo doesn't normally do price differences between digital and physical. But recent years it’s been 6% or more coming down now. But $60 (BOTW) in 2017 is worth $77 now, ($70 TOTK) Our economic situation post pandemic is kinda screwed, and unless things make a change soon we will continue with gradual price increases. When you account for inflation TOTK is cheaper the BOTW. TOTK cost exactly the same as Skyward sword when accounting for inflation since 2011 $50 has become $70. Games are relatively cheaper than ever, but we are becoming relatively poorer too. I hope it doesn’t reach a stage where gaming becomes a privilege only available to the richest amongst us.

Inflation isn't even a factor; 70USD games is greed, plain and simple. People are willing to pay that much, so the publishers will charge that much - whether the game involved is worth that much money or not. You can claim that the 70 USD price is necessary to make up for increased game budgets - but why is game development so expensive? Simple; Because publishers decided that games needed to be more photorealistic. Words you should pay attention to; "publishers", not developers, and "decided", because there was nobody asking for it. In other words, the same people complaining about development costs being so high are the reason those costs are high in the first place. It's certainly not necessary - look at the hundreds of quality games coming out from small studios. They're not making millions upon billions of dollars in profits, but they're making perfectly-comfortable profits. Some of them even get enough recognition to team up with huge publishers - thinking of Dead Cells and Vampire Survivors here, both of which got officially-licensed crossover DLCs with Castlevania. Not to mention that a huge amount of these AAA games that supposedly *need* the increased price are also coked up to the eyeballs with 120-dollar "deluxe" editions, 50-60 dollar season passes, battle passes, and predatory microtransactions, all designed to hoover money from the wallets of credulous muppets and directly into the wallets of scum like Bobby Kotick. Developers certainly don't see so much as a penny of those extra dollars - they're usually lucky if they don't get laid off moments before the release of the game they spent years of their life on. Knocking up the price to seventy has never been necessary - it just adds more zeroes to executive bank accounts than a hundred Flat Earth conventions.

@@technobladeleakedclips1827you never played it shut up. If you claim you did then tell me about an obscure side quest you did. It innovated in almost every aspect and is better than 99.99% of games out today. The gameplay loop alone makes it a major improvement over BOTW and worth the 70$ or 40$ on sale.

Another thing that dawned on me as I was watching some of the Switch 2 leak videos is the worry that the next system might only appeal to hardcore Nintendo fans. Think about it. The Switch 2 (from what we’ve seen) looks pretty much like a switch. The hardcore fans will buy it because we know it’s more powerful. But the general consumers? Moms buying systems for their kids? They’re just going to look at it and be like “we have a switch at home.” It’s like the Wii U again except this time it’s because of the system looking the same and not the name being confusing. It’s going to have a much smaller install base and sell far less overall.

They need to have good launch titles to actually sell with it.

The bad name and the bad advertisements are why the Wii U failed. I even think they could just call it “Switch 2” and anyone would understand. Plus if the ads are actually good and they get the point across that this is a Switch successor, we don’t need to worry about that.

"We have X console at home" will *always* happen on some level, calling it the Switch 2 makes it much more obvious it's a follow-up and not an expensive add-on. They really need a strong marketing campaign for it that makes features like backwards compatibility very clear so people know they can migrate their collections

It's possible, though I think it's worth noting that it's worked just fine for the PS2. And the PS3. And 4, and 5. It'll probably work for 6, too.

Games really didn’t take an increase for years while other goods and services did. I remember $60 games in 2008, what other product category didn’t move in that time? Not to mention, wages are up, and the development cycles are longer. games are one of the few areas where a price hike was justified. At the end of the day, gaming is entertainment, it is not a need like food or shelter, so my criticism would be less regardless. Lots of reality checks needed in this comment section and video.

@@ronwapossibly its an objective fact that wages are up, estimated 4% over the last calendar year. Now compare that to 12 years ago when games were still $60, the movement is justified. In addition to wage inflation you also have increases in COGS , marketing , etc.
