What a lovely comment to wake up to Terrie! It is a very happy and beautiful life, mostly. Every now and again, normally in horrendous weather, walking down the tow path with bags of shopping or coal, I wish I could just pull up to a house, get out of the car and get in quickly. And then I wake up to beautiful views and the world is all good again 😂😊

Caroline, Pete and the dogs convinced us to fly over from the States to rent a narrowboat for a week this summer. After thousands of YT video hours, we were still nervous about operating locks. Not to worry. You will have these mastered by your third lock. We did 24 locks in a week and absolutely looked forward to the next lock. Tunnels are also intimidating, but quite the fun adventure after one or two. We greatly appreciated the advice we received from other boaters. Everyone knows you have a hire boat and tries to be helpful. We actually asked others to not help on the locks after a bit. We wanted the experience and sometimes others might be a bit more aggressive in opening. It's your boat. Don't worry about the groceries. We loved walking into town for groceries and wine every couple of days. Pick up your kitchen basics at Aldi before getting on the boat - coffee, tea, salt, pepper, garlic, butter and oil. We frequently invited gongoozlers onto the boat for a trip through a lock. Fun for both of us. Yes, we scraped the wall several (or dozens of) times and had a few collisions and got the boat stuck. Use your horn on blind corners and going under blind bridges. Don't be bashful. We greatly enjoyed our experience in a narrowboat. The scenery, the communities and, most importantly, the people we encountered made for an awesome experience. We highly recommend this to other novices. Thank you so much to Caroline, Pete and the dogs.

We are so happy we inspired you Scott! And what a great account of your trip and some great advice. The one huge thing we have always stuck by from the beginning is to take your time and remember it’s your lock, and don’t let anyone hurry you. Thanks so much for your wonderful update 😊

Lovely cruise. It is peculiar, to say the least, seeing him in a tunnel with a brolly... just makes you go hmmmm. I have to say - y'all are very organized and tidy! Is that Caroline or Pete? and of course Pops and Hamish are perfection.
@onedaymoreaboard3 ай бұрын
It's always lovely to hear you enjoyed it Karen! We were so prepared with that brolly. Pete remembers those details far better than me, I just get confused between which tunnels and locks are where all the time! I guess we are both reasonably tidy, and have learnt to be even more so living in such a small space. Things can get very messy and overwhelming very quickly! Thankfully we have a lot of good storage on board so can hide things away when they're not in use 😊

Our two girls hated the tunnels. Going through the Standedge tunnel was very frightening for them and I had quite a few scratch marks from them even though I was inside the boat with them with all the lights one. If we could, one of us would walk them over the top of any tunnels after that. Otherwise, they coped very well with everything else we threw at them including their flights to and from Canada.
@onedaymoreaboard3 ай бұрын
It’s hard isn’t it, when you can’t even properly comfort them. I have no plans at all to ever go through the Standedge tunnel! Pete says different though. I will be inside with the dogs if it ever happens! Thanks for watching 😊
@fraserrowedianekincaid69883 ай бұрын
@@onedaymoreaboard the dogs have to be inside when you do the Standedge tunnel so it would be best for one of you to be with them. I think we should have taken them for a long walk before we set off to tire them out. It is really worth doing the tunnel and the countryside around there is exquisite even though it seemed to rain a lot. The alternative to taking the dogs through the tunnel is to Uber from one side to the other. It really is very interesting as there are two rail tunnels but one of them has had the tracks pulled up and that is the one where the vehicle drives back and forth checking on the boaters. There are cut throughs all the way along so they can see the boats. Not sure if it is the same as 2016 but we had to go through with a pilot but they let us steer the boat. The other rail tunnel takes the North Pennine train from Sheffield to Manchester and is quite busy and very exciting as it roars past you as the air rushes through the cut throughs. We would definitely encourage you to do it. Buy some pool noodles to wrap over the rails on the top edge of the boat as you will definitely make some contact with the walls. This is when the poor dogs would really freak out as we hit the walls. Do check carefully the measurements of your boat as there are definite restrictions. We loved that area of the canals and especially the Leeds to Liverpool. We are hoping to do the Rochedale maybe next year. We have tried twice before but due to flood damage to the bridges and locks in 2015 and vandalism and water shortages in MAY 2022 we are hoping that it will be third time lucky. We will attempt to from Sowerby Bridge end and probably get just past Todmorton - we will see🤪 Love your vlogs and the content and editing is brilliant. Your choice of music is always spot on!
@onedaymoreaboard3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the wonderful advice, and all of the extra information. So interesting. We had planned to go on the Leeds & Liverpool a couple of years ago, but decided against it at the very last minute, when we tuned south instead of north on the River Trent, due to reports of low water levels already. It was a good move with hindsight, as it was the year that my Dad got really sick, and we would have been at least a 3 hour drive away being so far north. We know from friends how beautiful it is up there so it's still on our to do list for one day 😊

Why is it that in most films on YT about narrowboating it`s the woman who does the hard graft at the locks, whie the lazy sod of an old man stands there at the tiller as if he`s Lord Nelson. Whatever happened to chivalry? When my wife and I spent a holiday on the canals I did the hard work as I`m the on with the muscles.
@caravanstuff28273 ай бұрын
Yes back in the day of chivalry that might have been a valid criticism...but it's 2024 and the time of women's liberation so they can do their fair share!!!.🤣🤣
@sparklepea3 ай бұрын
I often thought that but then I think that the tedium of being on the tiller for hours would be harder
@jillosler93533 ай бұрын
Most women on YT narrowboats are liveaboards and permanent cruisers. Some, like Vanessa (The Mindful Narrowboat) and Heidi (the Pirate) take the tiller into locks and also open/close locks but many do not feel happy negotiating their boat into locks - especially narrow ones or flights - so prefer to jump off and sort the locks while their husband/partner stays at the tiller.
