@@DGSnowolf I like it because it shows the far more tragic side of romance. Characters are grasping at straws, trying as best they can to both fight against and act on their urges, making regrettable mistakes in the heat of the moment, and failing even when they're doing what seems "right" to them. It's an oddly realistic story of inherently flawed characters that don't pretend to be anything other than human. Bizarrely I've seen a similar situation play out IRL, and those few people in real life shared similar mindsets and actions with those in the show. For me it highlights just how illogical and dumb we as humans can become when emotions get involved. As someone looking from the outside in, you can see that things are doomed to fail from the start, so it just seems dumb, but when I put myself in their shoes? I can honestly understand their struggle. They're desperate, driven by primal urges, and it's that ugly side of love and lust that very rarely sees the light of day, mainly because it's so painful to experience and watch. It's uncomfortable and you don't WANT to see it, but sometimes, in life, it's unavoidable. Honestly, I'm afraid to watch again as it was quite upsetting, but I'm glad I watched it to the end. It's an ugly story, and it hurts. That's what I think is good.
@DGSnowolf
@DGSnowolf 9 ай бұрын
So I should try to approach it as a study on human stupidity when it comes to romantic feelings and the pain that comes with it? Back when I watched it I couldn't find the entertainment value in it. It wasn't funny it wasn't overly emotional it was actually very cold, the characters aren't particulary deep at all, there is no real story just a premise. Maybe this is one of those things that hits you emotionally when you can empathize and I just couldn't cause I am too logically wired as a person to understand, which then didn't leave anything else for me to hold onto.@@tenaciousdnut

12:03 I totally agree with Garnt here, the reason I despise live action romance is because there are times when romances are portrayed in such an unrealistic way that it breaks my immersion but when the same thing happens in an anime it’s fine because there’s already that suspension of disbelief that naturally comes with a show being animated
@canti7951
@canti7951 9 ай бұрын
Garnt's argument sounds like a massive cope to me lol. That suspension of disbelief comes from the show being an anime, not being animation necessarily. Anime watchers are just used to anime being anime. Animation as a medium is not an excuse to disregard mature storytelling in favor of wish fulfillment fantasies. Imo, shit is shit no matter what medium and we give anime too much slack for appeasing us.

@aR0ttenBANANA it sort of does. When you see two real people on screen you expect it to be grounded. So seeing them act in the incredibly unreasonable ways that romance have their characters act pops out to you twice over. It just makes you think "Literally no human being in the history of humans just ACTS like this" I van genuinely understand what they mean when they say they have a higher suspension of disbelief for anime than live action. And I do agree. There is some shit that's just corny af in live action or genuinely so insane that the thought of them trying to portray it so realistically just makes it all jump out more. But conversely there is stuff that is so specific that trying to show it in animation without the minutia of movements or expressions wont work as well as with live action.

I like both types, but I think I prefer western romance, as western has a lot more of personalities clashing and it’s more interesting. Although I feel that I like anime romance captures the feeling of being attracted to someone and just enjoying each others company. Kare Kano (or His and Her Circumstances) is a pretty realistic portrayal of romance and some of the trials that come with it. Both of the characters, especially the guy, have pretty serious issues that make their relationship hard, but those same issues also bring them together. It's emotionally grounded in a way that I haven't seen other anime articulate. I think it's a must watch if you like 90s anime or romance anime or Gainax.

Personal problem and metaproblem with romance anime that there are two paths: a) its unrealistically ideal. The whole story is about edging and blueballing the audience for a confession and the whole show is just "get a room with your unconditional platonic love already" Japan has a horrible time with relationships in real life, and even westerners face a sort of similar problem. Couples brake up fast, because in real life there will be problems that MUST be talked about, but instead the couples thoughts will be: "oh... this is not what Ive learned, so we arent a match, I must find my partner instead of whoever I am with now..." But in Japan they don't even turn into a couple, because even the confession is on a high pedestal. b) we go straight (?) lewd, ntr, one night stand hentai without commitment. And we have a massive gaping void between the two. There is a reason people LOVE Hornymiya. Because they are a sort of disfunctional couple, and the drama is between them, not "a world against their confession" trial. Recently I got more hooked to Korean romance webtoons, because their cliches are so refreshing after decades of anime tropes. Their teasing feels... "humane" is the right word?

The problem trope with anime romance is that it talks down to the audience a lot of the times. Like Garnt said, "it's animated, so it's a fantasy escape. suspend your disbelief." There's a lot of junk out there because it is precisely a medium for cotton-candy wish-fufillment, but there's some really good stuff, and a lot of it was in the 80's. Like as Conor was mentioning, anime love triangles aren't great if there aren't built on anything substantive, but that's basically almost every Mitsuru Adachi series... to a fault often. Although I think the concept of "Miyuki" was clunky and would be cringe today, it was built around a clever triangle where the three people are all trying to considering the best interests of the other people instead of just taking what they want. Or the immortal baseball series "Tough" where the person in the way isn't even there at all but their presence is felt the whole series through. Or the first "Kimagure Orange Road" movie... take the silly rom-com love "triangle" from the series and holy hell, break it apart in the most agonizing way possible. But as always, the gold standard is Maison Ikkoku. It's not really a love triangle because you know that the focus is on the two main characters, but the tension is maintained as the story progresses over the course of four years, and you get to see how not only the relations progress but how the individual people do as well. There will never been another series like it, it absolutely most be mentioned every time the topic of anime rom-coms comes up.

Most of, if not all of Shinkai films are more emotionally driven rather than narrative focused. Like yeah, Shinkai really likes to make twist and turns when it comes to his characters, plots and environmental storytelling. But tbh, the stories are all melodramatic for the sake of keeping the audience engaged emotionally from its visuals rather than what the movies telling you through dialouge. And it also helps that his beautiful backgrounds (aka every anime background wallpaper) really does captivate the audience and pulls a certain emotion from them when seeing it. Dont get me wrong, I'm a big Shinkai fan, even before Your Name came out. and all of his movies do fall under the same genre of films that are excessive/theatrical emotionally charged works.

He has certain motifs you'll find in every movie; a mess of train tracks, a beautiful shot of sunrise and others I can't remember for the life of me but my point stands that he makes a very particular style of movie which feels emotional regardless of the plot. I don't wanna get technical with plot or the lack there of and what not but hear me out, Just watch his movies with no expectations and you'll find yourself weeping by the end. So yea if you want depression watch his movies P.S. I feel like my views are way too similar to his as 12:07. A thing I like about Makoto Shinkai and explains a lot of his faults is that he’s not a trained animator or story teller. He’s a video game developer that self taught himself how to make anime so he’s slowly gets more refined each project. @MagmaSpacer
@MagmaSpacer 10 ай бұрын
@@nikua_This is just incorrect. They didn’t go back to the original home until they had to retrieve the boy after his sort of sacrifice to be the keystone. So they had a journey that was completely unrelated to the theme, and then the second journey was what gave her the closure. But her wanting to go back for him and go on yet another journey felt tedious and it was for a guy she barely knew. This isn’t even taking into account the random need to include an extra friend to use his car. How she was able to talk to her past self and then have the memory loss for this infinite loop, we don’t know and makes no sense. There was no need for any sort of time travel shenanigans for this plot at all. And her past self forgets anyways so this sort of symbolism is rather hollow and doesn’t mean anything. It’s there for the sake of it. If you cut almost the first half of the movie and had it just be a special where she goes to her home and reaches closure then it would be way better. The dude she meets is also completely superfluous to her journey and the fate of the world element is silly. This movie was a slog to get through with no real redeeming qualities. It looked okay, no memorable music, a repetitive feeling to the journey, and a nonsensical addition to the plot. You can think the message is pretty if you want, but personally I don’t find the writing all that strong or intriguing. I think her talking to her new mother was probably one of the better scenes I remember and was probably the only thing I loved.

I'm just tired of romance based stories where the over-arching plot line is the protagonist character(s) *in the process* of trying to get together or being in the early stage of a relationship and you get all the miscommunication mishaps, or worse, the will they won't they trope. I don't mind complicated love stories with established characters but I'd love to see more of positive well established relationships where the conflicts are surrounding the supporting cast, the outer environment etc. and the relationship itself is fine. Maybe exploring how the couple handles challenge together in a healthy way. idk I like being able to be happy for the characters I'm getting attached to rather than constantly wondering if they actually like each other or if they will be happy (unless it's really obviously a show where I wouldn't expect that).

tbh I don't really get the complaint about 5 centimetres per second not having a plot. (Obviously it does but) The idea that the plot is 'weak' or 'bad' because there is not necessarily a lot happening in the moment seems really bizarre. A plot is bad if it is difficult to follow, this is definitely not the case with 5 centimetres per second. The purpose of a plot is to allow the creators to explore the ideas and evoke the emotions that they want to. The plots of 5cps do this well; there is no reason at all to complain about them imo.

I personally loved Suzume. It is in my top 5 movies of the last year. I also don't think it is, at least primarly, a romance. I think it deals more with a loss of a loved one (Suzume's mother), the mythological aspect & the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake aspect. I don't think there is even an actual romance since it's just Suzume having a crush on Souta.

The real problem is that Connor's rules are childish and he is missing out for two reasons: 1. He won't accept highschool romance, even though it can be actually meaningful and profound anime and manga like Scum's wish, Ichigo 100% and Bloom into you. 2. He won't read manga, where the majority of good dramatic and mature romance is. Connor would go crazy reading Inio Asano.

most people don't even know what love is or how to love properly, that is why we end up in both ends of the spectrum where it is too idealized or just a giant depressing trainwreck, don't get me wrong we need some of those but how many romances do people endure hardship together and actually grow stronger and more mature together? can most people name any?

Sounds like a skill issue, Connor. /s Kidding aside, I personally love both anime and Western romances. I mean, I have watched a decent amount of romance dramas and romcoms from both sides. (Though a lot of recent Western romcoms are just meh to me with a few exceptions) I just simply love the romance genre. The times when I do dislike a romance anime or movie/series depends on whether I liked it or not.

Now that I think about it, Connor is kinda spitting facts. On the other hand, I get what Garnt is saying at the end with the higher suspension of disbelief in anime. Like: An AK47 on the kitchen table looks weird, you ask why the fuck it's there. But an AK47 next to other handguns and stuff? Probably an armory or something.

I personally prefer anime romance (It’s my fav genre.) I think part of that is because with real actors well, obviously you might recognise them from other movies right? And I kind of can’t get into it because of that, whereas with anime these characters are all unique for every series and brand new. Yeah, some may look identical to another series but they are still COMPLETELY different people.

I liked all of the makoto shinkai movies. But suzume struck me as a littlw bit wierd. Dont get me wrong, in his movies as joey said its more or less always about that collection of emptions. But neither in your name or in weathering with you its explicitly STATED that its about love and everything. Like obviously it is, but it wasnt like "look at me, its a romance movie!". Ans then in suzume, at least in the german version there is a scene where she says something like "i dont fear this. I fesr a world without him and want to do everything to save him!". And somehow that wierded me out more than it probably should have. Simply because of the way its stated.
