My problem with race-swapping is that it comes off as lazy tokenism masquerading as diversity. There’s a vast history of mythology from all cultures to draw from, so it shouldn’t be difficult for writers and creators to craft original, diverse, and representative stories. It’s tiring to see people defending these companies for doing the bare minimum to appear inclusive instead of pushing for authentic, creative representation.

I used to feel more that way too, but when he pointed out that they've been doing color-blind casting, I realized that if more people were aware of that, then they might realize that it wasn't necessarily tokenism, but choosing the acting skills of truly becoming that character over naturally looking like that character. I am annoyed that they didn't make the hair a more vibrant red in The Little Mermaid, since that is one of her defining traits besides her singing voice, but that was a costuming error at worst. Most of the issues with the live action movies have been the costuming and maybe some of the directing and story changes. I do, however, agree that Disney should start pumping out new stories from other cultures that highlight those cultures in a positive way. Especially if it's as good as the piece of history that Mulan was written from, I mean she's a Disney princess that went to war, and I think that's one hell of a dichotomy (in the best way).

That being said, we also need to chat about how ridiculous the live-action remake trend is getting. I get the point of The Little Mermaid and Snow White, but what the world needs least right now is a live-action Tangled. There is nothing to update in this still recent story. As much as I'd like a non-white Rapunzel, all this online discourse only encourages Disney to continue being lazy and serving mediocrity. These films are rarely the epic cultural milestones they should be.

The issue is that original live-action Disney films aren't usually very good, let alone successful. Disney thus sees remakes as their only claim to fame in that market (not counting other companies they own, just Walt Disney Pictures). Such a shame, since they could make PG-13 fairy tale musicals. I personally think remakes should be at least 3 generations ahead of the original, which is why I think the renaissance remakes are too soon (as a 2000s kid, they came out when my parents were growing up and came right before my childhood).

I 100% agree! I'm white and Tangled is my favorite disney movie, I literally grew up with it. But a live action version will not replace that. The animated movie still exists. Ppl act like a new movie would take the old one away from them. You know there're plenty of movies about fairy tales, right? Every movie is a bit different. In once upon a time Rapunzel is a person of color. Giving ppl of color chances to get more roles is a great thing. I cannot believe how stupid and mean some white ppl are about it. (I mean, I'd prefer not to get a Tangled Live Action at all but that's because most Disney remakes suck. It's not about the actors. I think Charithra or Avantika are perfect choices)

@@shadow4040 I know what you mean. For me it's more important that the personality and feeling of the character is the same. The look is less important. Like he talked about Ariel and Halle is the perfect choice because she could bring the personality of the character to life. You mentioned atla, there the actors and costumes look a lot like the original but the personality and feeling of the original don't come across (which is also the director's fault of course). I don't think it's "shocking" when an actress / actor looks different to the animated character, it's more shocking when they don't feel like that character. And again, you still have the animated movie, you won't lose that version. But yeah, I wouldn't wish a Rapunzel la because the animated movie isn't that old. It's just not necessary (same with Moana). If they make a la version they should change a lot about the story so that it's a different movie. Maybe a movie about the original Rapunzel fairytale

So what the hell is a _Tangled_ remake a remake of? Is it like _Cinderella_ (2015) where instead of an actual remake, is its own adaptation of the fairy tale itself, and the animated movie is mostly ignored, or is it like the Disney Princess films after it, where the opposite is true, where they want you to make comparisons to the animated movies and the characters specific to them. With so many successful white characters in successful IPs, it's not worth it to make successful non-white characters who stand on their own, so we'll just raceswap an existing and recognizable IP and pretend we did any hard work. This is so racist, lazy, and idiotic.

The comments under OP's post are so truly idiotic and lack nuance. Have you forgotten that the only white Disney Princesses whose white race is needed, integral and important to the story, that if you were to inappropriately swap them would be Princess Merida and Anastasia? Princess Merida is a Scottish Disney princess where she has a Scottish, cultural background. Anastasia is Russian. Where there is Russian background. But you willingly and deliberately forget this, because all you guys know about these raceswaps is because you pay too much attention to them. Rapunzel is a WHITE Disney princess with no specific cultural background tied to her race. She happened to be a white princess because a. White is the default race when it comes to designing a character for a story. B. Even though the original Rapunzel is was written in Germany, the story itself, the story's setting is not set in Germany. European fairytales that were written in Europe to be retold and readapted to add a sprinkle of diversity is not CULTURAL appropriation. So of course she would be reimagined as a white girl. Rapunzel is named that name because she is a girl with long hair and is stuck in a tower. To reimagine her as an south -asian woman with an Indian culture with the idea of the lanterns coming from holi and diwali is genius. And also bc Indian women are known to have long, thick hair. So the "what if Tiana, Mulan and Pocahontas" was white isn't the f*cking gotcha moment you thought it was. Because their race is needed and tied to the story as there is a cultural background that's why their races are needed. It wouldn't make sense to white wash Tiana as a struggling white girl in New Orleans, and Mulan as a white girl where there is mainly Chinese diaspora and the same goes for Pocahontas. You two are the epitome of the "white genocide stickman" meme I see on twitter. Just say you see a minor sprinkle of diversity as a threat to whiteness. Some sort of white genocide mindset. "Reverse whitewashing" the argument. Raceswapping ≠ Whitewashing. You've been overrepresented but white characters in your entirely damn lives, but God forbid Disney, a white centered company known for making a majority of white characters and not minority, add diversity to their classic stories. The audacity. You have to be so privileged to think this is an attack to whiteness, adding a sprinkle of diversity because you been represented ever since Hollywood was established. Tinkerbelle and Ariel are mythological creatures. Oh, my! I didn't know mythological stuff is limited down to whites only? "Why can't they-" but if they did people would be b*tching that it's "too woke" or "too progressive". I hope they recreate fantasy stories and mythological stories and add diversity and people of colour do you can cry.

Exactly. Rehashes are narrative wastes of creativity that includes mind-boggling changes to moments/lines/songs that Disney wants to distract us from, tarnishing rewatchability. These alternate bloodline changes for characters are so unimportant to the character that it has Afro (black, though I don't use that for us) longtime Disney fans like me waiting for non-Euro rep who are always non-Euro in original movies that are well-written. 'Encanto', 'Coco', 'Soul', 'Moana', 'Turning Red', 'Raya: The Last Dragon', etc. has too long of gaps in between or at least, came in a bulk with no hope in the future beyond 'Iwájú', 'Kazazi Moto: Generation Fire', 'Strange World' (right direction with non-Euro characters but the movie itself was bland). And I want to avoid movies where we gotta turn into animals (even beyond Disney; 'Spies in Disguise') while Euro leads never do, so if those are in the future, they can eff off with that mess.

The thing that gets me about the racism to leading ladies in these films… Rachel Zegler is NOT the first mixed race girl to play Snow White. Kristen Kreuk played her like 20 years ago. In once upon a time a woman who isn’t white played Rapunzel and Cinderella. Brandy famously played Cinderella in the 90s in a made for tv movie SO beloved she’s reprising the role for Descendants. I feel like diversity was kind of easier to do before the whole world and the internet went nuts and racist. Though I won’t be myopic on history I know racists bitched about that once upon a time Rapunzel but this was kind of a fart in the wind due to the fact that that show had jumped the shark by then and no one cared long term. I just find it upsetting when actresses like Halle and Rachel can get an onslaught of hate just for… being cast because they’re beautiful and talented- and the most heartbreaking response I saw was someone saying they hope Disney gives into the thugs and casts a blonde white girl because seeing another none white girl get that much hate is just too upsetting.

With that in mind, the casting is completely wrong - and not just when it comes to skin colors, even Peter Pan is missing his ginger hair that made him stand out. If any other company wanted to make a Little Mermaid with a black Ariel, I don't think people would have cared that much, but the fact that Disney is trying to recreate their films and barely do any effort at trying to get the cast right.

I feel like the most important aspect of all of this is that it's a FAN CAST. I can go on and on about the multitude of reasons why this hypothetical casting wouldn't be a problem if it was real, but I won't because if people keep arguing, they're inevitably going to forget this was never real in the first place. Not too long ago, there were multiple people fancasting Sabrina Carpenter. And just because that fancast is no longer viral, that doesn't mean anyone has stopped viewing her as a contender. Also, if this or a similar casting decision DOES become reality, I'm just gonna come out and say it: it will never be because Disney was specifically looking for an actress of whatever race whoever does end up being Rapunzel is. The director of the live-action Little Mermaid literally said they auditioned actresses of as many races/ethnicities as possible (including white girls), with no intention on favoring any races over others in the casting process. So there's an equal chance of it being pretty much any young actress/singer, even someone we may have never heard of. But yeah, it's a FAN CAST. Disney had absolutely zero involvement. If it becomes real, then we can sit down and talk about why it's not a big deal. I don't want anyone getting mad at something that, as far as we know, probably won't happen because there's so many other people it could be.

The manner of story-telling of changed, but the characters were not racially diverse. The fairytales, most of them, were from white European authors about white European women. It is not fair that we are constantly told that every race and ethnicity MUST adhere only to their historical culture and that it cannot be shared, with white people especially scrutinized and put under HEAVY moderation, but then they take our history and our heritage and our ancestral culture and change it to make it theirs. White people are a global minority. The majority consists of Asians, Hispanics, and Africans. They just need to stop saying that their live action versions are of the og Disney animated movies. They need to consider them live action Disney retellings, like many movie studios have done before.. I think disneys done it before too but can’t remember any specifics (oh!! Like all their og princess movies. Princess and the frog is the best example.) I don’t want an Indian rapunzel thrown into the world of the original animated movie. I want an Indian rapunzel represented in her own world, whether it’s a new made up fantasy world that’s beautifully diverse or a world that fits into her Indian background. I’m tired of them remaking old classics and changing nothing of value to make it something new, they just change rlly random stuff. Make something new and creative. It’s why I actually enjoyed maleficent and cruella, cus they were new alternative twists on the og story

Halle does not look like, and cannot act like, the role (overly-energetic teenager with wild-looking bangs). She has 1 out of 3 things that are *minimum requirements* to play an existing character convincingly (voice yes, looks no, acting no). Plus she looks too old, more like a sleek college student with expensive hair than a rebellious wild teenager. The world is not convinced. That is Disney's fault for forcibly expanding the acting pool to people who cannot (like, absolutely cannot despite makeup and hair) look like the role being cast. I don't believe for 1 second that Halle was the best option of all girls who applied. I bet there was a teenage natural redhead (a rare 2% minority) who could act and sing that didn't get the role because she was neither famous nor a recognized "inclusive" minority. What a scam.

I don't really think Disney is doing so well on it's live action remakes so should probably stop it. but as far as the little mermaid goes, my biggest problem was not the color of 'Ariels' skin. it was that they didn't give the actress any shade of red hair! 'Ariels' iconic hair in the original is read and I loved that red hair!!!!!!! I don't care how silly this sounds, but it has bugged me non-stop that they did not give her red hair.

Honestly, I don't have an opinion on changing the race of the princesses. One, none of the movies or characters are real, so for people to say, "oh this character is not black," your wrong because they don't exist. Two, there is only one black OG Disney princesses, so I can understand bringing a little bit of diversity to the screen because this isn't the 50's anymore. Three, it's not changing the plot of the story in anyway. I understand how the past few movies haven't been the best, but if you're so mad talk to the directors about it. Don't bash the actors and blame them for ruining the movies, because they didn't write it. Overall, just be nicer to people it's not a world ending problem the Ariel is black....

Bro and that's the thing that ticks me off it's not even a real casting. The same people who say “oh how about you? Make original stories of this ethnicity or this culture” are the same people who turn their backs on movies like Encanto or turning red when they aren't even that bad. The truth is most of these people are adults (Who are mostly male) pissing and crying about the race of a movie they didn't even grow up watching. Not saying that is the case for everyone but I know with the way I grew up watching girly movies wasn't so popular for guys. In general these movies are being put out for a whole new generation who does not give a crap what the race of the last with long hair is or the mermaid. Remakes of movies have always been a thing. You're allowed to have favorites but stop bashing others and especially the actresses.

Disagree with a lot of this video but I appreciate your take and opinion. But I’d like for you to try to see it the other way. Just because one group was systematically oppressed doesn’t mean we should replace current already made media with certain character backgrounds with the systemically groups. We can make retellings, as I’ve said in a previous comment. But the best course of action is to make og work for these groups. It’s so lazy to take already preexisting EVERYTHING and just shove the race u want to represent in there. We need to find works made by these groups and, with their permission, turn it into another form of media, like movies, to give it more attention, even better… let them take whole control of that! We need to let these groups be represented through creativity and care, and not shoot down everyone else in the process.

So I noticed in the background, that there was a thing about Hercules. Since it's set in Greece, I feel like they (Disney) could've (assuming that this isn't from fan conjecture like the Rapunzel thing) leaned towards a Greek actor (though I'm not personally familiar with any, and they may be few and far between) while avoiding just getting anybody with European features and a lot of muscle. I do understand that his defining traits are his strength and, in the animated one at least, partially his hair color, and that his overall character is charming, insecure, humble, and a little naïve. I absolutely understand if the actor can bring the character to life, or actors if they double cast for the earlier bit of his life where he had a more lithe frame (unless they decide to do the same thing they did with Chris Evans in the Captain America movie and just use special effects to make him look smaller than he actually is). However, I feel on the fence about it since it is a relevant part of the story in that it takes place in Ancient Greece, but also the color blind casting could be easily justified by the well known fact that Zeus was sleeping with everything and everyone (though he's ironically depicted in the Disney animation as being a loyal husband). What's your take?

Coming from a black woman- there’s a lot of nuance with colorism and racism in media- duh. One of your main points “another race isn’t another species” which is true - but notice that’s the case with black actresses. Tink & Ariel aren’t human, so when they’re of the only black characters now, that’s where the “leftovers” and “scraps” kind of comes from. And then when Disney does more roles for POCs - the story tends to lack. Not always, but often. So this a mixed bag. Bc Halle is phenomenal but that live action doesn’t have a lot of care nor magic in it compared to Cinderella (2015) for example. Not only does Lily also do as well as Halle, but Lily’s film has so much beauty and magic in it that the little mermaid kinda didn’t. To me, even Aladdin (2019) lacks that “magic” feeling. It’s annoying, but it’s been the case, the “woke” live actions have some of the most lackluster results, which to me doesn’t help the diversity. Like it almost feels intentional but that’s a theory. Don’t get me started on Mulan. That was long, I’m sorry.

I remember this old cartoon series I grew up watching about different fairy tale and the episodes were based off the oldest versions of the fairytales they could find, so I have no problem with the live action cast being a different race other than white. My problem with TinkerBell is that she doesn’t really feel like TinkerBell. She doesn’t have Tinker Bell‘s personality, the spice, fieriness and sassy attitude. She reminds me more of TinkerBell‘s friend, the sun fairy Iridessa. And my problem with Rachel Ziegler is that she didn’t even like the movie or the character she was going to play, and that she was bashing a movie that many loved without thinking of the impact it would have on people’s perception. It felt like Rachel was just saying we were stupid and dumb for liking the Disney animated version of it and that the story was irrelevant. How is she supposed to deliver a reliable showing if she doesn’t even like the character or part she’s going to play? She couldn’t even put her personal feelings about it aside and brought it up multiple times in interviews. That just made me lose any faith or hope for the movie, along with all the other changes they tried to make. I just wish they stayed true to the important parts of the character like their personality and other details like the color of the clothes and the design choices.

Yeah, I'm gonna leave a long comment and if it's too long for you to read it, just know I absolutely agree with you 110%, Tommy. I doubt you'll see this and read it all but oh well lol. Awesome job, as always! Anyway, the ignorance of these people is... I can't even say unbelievable because I've learned never to underestimate the stupidity of others but it's still ridiculous some of the excuses the people come up with to justify their racism. As you've said many times, Halle Bailey isn't white but she was undoubtedly the perfect casting choice for Ariel. There's absolutely no one else that could've played the character to such a flawless level. She honestly deserved an Oscar for her performance as Ariel because her casting is the same S-tier level as Glenn Close as Cruella and Jim Carrey as The Grinch (Yes, that's not Disney, you nitpickers but that's just an example of ideal casting). Honestly, her casting made me change the way I fancast where I look at great actors that also look like the characters and instead I know look at actors who just feel like the character and have a great look for the character. The fact that it took me that long to actually start doing that is just embarrassing. And honestly, I feel like that casting is one of the reasons this remake will be able to stand the test of time unlike a lot of other remakes because of The Little Mermaid did make a cultural impact by casting Halle as Ariel. It's something black kids are gonna grow up with and connect with. We're already seeing how much black kids are connecting with it. As for Avantika Vandanapu as Rapunzel, I think she has a great look for the character and if they had her hair be curly like her natural hair is, that would make the long hair look even more gorgeous. My only concern with her would be her singing because while it was nice enough and fit the character of Karen, it wasn't exactly anything spectacular. While Rapunzel doesn't have one of the best voices in the Disney Princess line-up, Mandy Moore still has a beautiful voice. Maybe she'll sound better as Rapunzel than she did Karen but who knows. In every other respect I think she'd be a great potential Rapunzel. However, as you've said, there aren't any current plans to remake Tangled to our knowledge. I have no issue with color-blind casting, just so long as the actors suit the characters. I mean, the actor for Peter Pan was really stiff and lifeless and I'm not sure if it was because he's a bad actor or if it was the writing and directing, but his race wasn't the issue. However, I do agree that hair color is an important part of a character's look. By not including it, that does just give the racism more ammunition to attack them and say that it's not the character. For example, if they were to cast Sofia Wylie as Odette from The Swan Princess (Which is one of my personal top casting choices for the character in the live-action remake), you would need to just make her hair something like a dirty blonde or a shade of blonde that just goes with her skin-tone better. The only issue I do have is when they cast people of color as white historical people. HEAR ME OUT! First of all, I don't give a damn about the history. However, something a lot of friends of mine that are black have pointed out about this is that it keeps real historical people of color from having their stories told because not all black people in history were slaves but their stories haven't been told. Also, am I the only one who thinks Naomi Scott would've been amazing as Belle? She was amazing as Jasmine but she shouldn't have been given the role due to how she's half-white. Plus, with the hairline she has in Aladdin, she kind of gives Belle a little bit. Also, the casting of Nani is atrocious and the fact that the racist think they have a good point with their casting white actors as people of color is just another reason why I hate people. Great video, as always.

In my personal opinion its not about the colour of the skin more about the setting. So if a south asian woman was casted, it just wouldnt make a lot of sense why an asian would be a german princess and some ppl suggesting a whole shift of a setting, but then it wouldnt be a live action tangled then? i can admit an indian tangled would be gorgeous, but so is the european culture in it like the architecture and music(the whole kingdom song with the folk dance). So if a poc actress was casted, i think portraying tangled as mixed would make more sense if her dad was the king of corona but the mother is from a kingdom from india then i dont see an issue with that. id love to hear what ppl think with my perspective. 24:25 Counter-example of "it changes the dynamic so you can't" : The Little Mermaid being heavily influenced by colonial carribean era yet the royals are black and adopted Eric. It doesn't make any sense and yet they've done it. So yes, in Disney, you apparently can switch a dynamic even though it doesn't make sense. Something you overlook when you talk of white princesses and non-white princesses : non-white princesses and their ethnicities are visually identifiable, but not for their white counterparts. Spoiler : "white" is not an ethnicity. "German", "Swedish" and "French" are. Somehow by being focused on a person's skin color to determine their culture you completely forget that white people have not one culture. I am French. Germans are not Frenchies. Frenchies are not Germans. When you actually live in Europe, you notice specific features on people originating from different european countries. Some that don't necessarily involve skin color. No, white european aren't a race. It's like naming every asian person you see chinese. My point is Disney seems no longer interested in making movies for all children. It is making movies for USA. They input what is currently the issues of current USA , without realizing that those issues are not global yet they showcase them as if they are making universal knowledge. Only the USA is obsessed with races and ethnicities. Don't you ever think for a moment, when you fix indian-looking people being excluded from History, that it doesn't ring anything for Indian people in India ? When an indian sees an american from indian descent, the character isn't indian, the actor isn't indian, they will perceive him as american. Somehow americans don't seem to be aware of it. Irish people in Ireland dislike american from irish descent because they don't have anything in common yet claim that Ireland is their motherland. USA has issues with races and skin colors because every people living there - except the native - are all immigrants. I mean yeah, you commonly believe that a pure american is a white person. A pure american is a native american actually. And somehow you are all obsessed with the countries your ancestors lived in, saying you belong to these cultures, when you don't. Afro-americans are not africans. They are afro-americans. A french-american whose family has lived in USA for a century, never known life in France, is not French. They would be american to me. And talking about minorities and stuff, Chinese is the most numerous people in the world. Believing chinese = minority is so close-minded and unrepresentative of the world we live in. Chineses are a minority only outside China. So stop making things worst by replacing white people from various ethnicities with americans of color. Start creating for real. You don't need to look like someone to connect with them. I don't listen to kpop music because I feel korean. I don't worship everything Morgan Freeman does because I am black (I am not). Wether you look like me or not doesn't matter. Values are what connect people. When you subvert the balance : making appearance a value, your speech becomes shallow. So stop making someone's appearance a value. Focus on their thoughts, dreams, everything beside superficial aspects and you get a good representation. In conclusion, nah, I don't want an indian Rapunzel with blonde hair, because the value that the movie carries shifts then. The message conveyed becomes : white-skinned people should be erased from stories because the sins of our (great-great-grand)fathers apparently fall onto us. This is what people are mad about. The sentiment of being the villain of the entire universe apparently, just by being born with white skin. It's as unfair as prejudices against black-skinned people.

Disney will just do the thing with a romance story again and we need Pocahontas’ story to be true to the actual person. But also, we all know that Disney won’t represent the fact that she was a child (not a teenager) and that she was a MMIW (Missing, Murdered Indigenous woman). I’m saddened that Disney didn’t offer the roles of the 7 dwarfs to little people, I kind of expected it though, I also wonder if any little people were interested in the roles. There’s a difference between not offering a role to a person just because, and making a decision to create characters with CGI without even offering a role to actual people.

Also the fact that white people think they know more about Cleopatra than us just because they stole our artifacts is so stupid and in fact I find it racist that they think Cleopatra should be black because she is an Egyptian queen even though she was Greek . If it's a fantasy and changing race doesn't have anything to do with the character fine, but if it is a documentary no no, no , if it's a documentary, it should be accurate. Also, Jasmine being whitewashed was the stupidest decision ever, and the costumes made me want to throw up. Also, I have never seen a Middle Eastern or Muslim person in modern disney films where they are a major character. Why do we not get represented and instead be called terrorists? I do find blackwashing historical figures is just wrong especially if it's a documentary. You could just hire a black man to play george Washington super easy but it would be wrong because they are white and are known for that idk why you can't just make a documentary on a black leader like that one man idr his name but he was the richest man in the world and is even richer than the richest man currently just do that.

Julia Roberts version of Tink in Hook. She really plays on the physicality of Tink- because, surprise! Tinkerbell is a *fairy*! She's essentially a fantasy character Tink could be... Purple with pink polka dots and she would still be tink, because she's a fantasy character. And I was upset about Halle's casting- I mean , I honestly didn't give a damn about the actress, I thought she did great, but I was more upset about the voice. Halle Berry is a wonderful singer, but... She's a very bad actress. Her acting is bad, she played it very dryly and emotionlessly. I hope that they will take the actress who is Karen in the new Mean Girls for the role of Rapunzel, because she has a wonderful voice and she has a very good acting (And these two factors are very important in the film musical)

You still ignore the documented backlash for Jasmine not being browner in the live-action movie. It's like when people tried to gaslight us into thinking the Last Airbender and Dragonball 2009 movies did not have major casting backlash 🤦🏿‍♂️. Nevertheless, nobody should have an issue with alternate bloodline changes in these live-action rehashes of movies that were mostly perfect already because they are inherently a waste of creation regardless of who is cast. "Yay, non-Euro rep! Yeah these characters are realistic with less expression at times, in the exact same flow!". I watched all of them as a kid, so I can detect the downgrade scenes/animal designs. Same for 'How To Train Your Dragon' (not Disney, but we'll see what dumb thing Dreamworks do, not the casting, but stuff changed for the sake of boring/confusing). They add/remove in mind-boggling ways. The faces of Flounder and Sebastian are enough to keeo me from watching The Little Mermaid (2022) as we know how Scooby-Doo and Alvin & the Chipmunks had perfect cartoony faces. Defenders of them having boring normal faces are effin dumb. No excusing the downgrade of Genie-Jafar just having a murky fart cloud, and stiff stupid Cabe of Wonders not moving. Lion King's "Remember" scene not having the cloud formation. So many inexcusable things that makes these movies more offensive to the originals. Not the alternate bloodline characters who Disney probably hopes we focus on to ignore the craptastic shifts elsewhere most of the time. I can get behind a Tiana movie where she does not stay as a frog though. Played by Ryan Destiny. And we don't need hypothetical system oppression for Redheads to be interested in keeping their characters around, they were murdered by the thousands due to their features centuries ago, still discriminating here and there (let's *NOT* act like Cameron Monaghan's Star Wars character did not have his hair edited to other colors by people who hate Redheads), terrible. But that is not necessary to acknowledge wanting Redheads to stick around when adapting them. They tend to get erased when casting/animating as they do not even keep Redhead genes when raceswapped. Netlfix's She-Ra showed this, the Redheads were most of who's hair got changed to for zero reason, only likelihood is Redhead hate. Redhead Ariel, Barbara Gordon (The Caped Crusader) and April O'Neil of Afro bloodline are showing creators a shift in keeping Redhead rep more often. Beyond Pantha, Mas y Menos (some of the non-Euro Teen Titans *kept* from the 'Titans' show) and female Wildcat, all from DC comics show that creating Redheads of non-Euro ancestry is what really takes forever, so swaps for them is something I can dig as that encourages others to create more non-Euro Redheads who don't get interrupted when the Euro version comes back post-swap.

Actually.... in the original story of the little mermaid, the little mermaid seems like she is a white person, her hands were described as white, and in the book when she drinks the potion that the sea witch gave her and turns into a human, the book says: "and then became aware that her fish’s tail was gone, and that she had as pretty a pair of white legs " she had white legs, and i don't think that her body was fully a different color except her legs, which were white, in the original tale it is also mentioned that she had blue eyes, which is okay to change and let the actress have different colored eyes, no problem. now... i am not racist and i absolutely adore Halle as Ariel, she was flawless and i am 100% sure that she was born for that role, i am just saying that you should read the original stories carefully and not say that the lead characters weren't described with a specific skin color, eye color, etc. also, when you said that Snow White was given her name because of her personality and stuff, you made me laugh... please stop. just stop. i know you are trying to show us that it is stupid to name a child by looking at her skin tone and that it was never said in the original story that her name was chosen by the color of her skin, then let me prove you wrong, so when the Queen in the original story gives birth to the little girl, it is said: "she had a little daughter who was as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as ebony wood, and therefore they called her Little Snow-White." and this proves that she was named Snow White because of her skin and not because of her pure heart and personality, seriously... who waits for their kid to grow up first and see how is their personality like and then choose their name? nonsense. please stop talking about that we can welcome any race to play a specific character who's original look was already done in a such a unique and iconic way, no, i understand that you are saying that as long as the personality and charisma the actors have, matches the original character it is okay to cast them, but let's not forget that we were already shown that however the character that was created first, is supposed to look like the way it was done in the first place and it is not easy to just be okay with them swapping race, again... i am not racist and i love every race, but it is just something we all naturally think, and that you have no right to complain about Naomi Scott not being as brown and not as Arabic looking as Jasmine if you say that it is perfectly fine to change the race of originally white character, stop it. and also when you talked about Maleficent not having green skin in the live-action remake, you have no right to complain about this either, still because of the same reason as the Jasmine situation. leave the original characters the way they are, don't touch them. and stop saying that every race can freely play any character. no.

@@sethzarandona2325 Jasmines race is important to the story, i agree but, middle eastern people are not that dark as disney first showed us in their original Aladdin, some of them are but also some of them aren't, there are lots of middle eastern people that are paler that europan people for example, so casting Naomi to play Jasmine isn't a big deal, she also looks pretty arab to me and other people, and saying that she should have that exact shade of skin that Jasmine had in the original disney movie is ridiculous honestly, and she did a pretty good job as Jasmine. about Rapunzel- i really like Avantika and i see that Rapunzel energy in her, plus she pretty much looks like her with her features, do i care that she has brown skin? NO... WHAT THE HECK... i would love to see her play Rapunzel, i see the character in her, i honestly think she would do great. what matters is to make her look as close as possible like Rapunxel, she NEEDS to have blond hair, and eye color is not a big deal but it would be cool to give her green lenses, i am not complaining, it's just something i would like to see. same as Ariel- I loved Halle as Ariel, and her visuals also remind me of a sea creature, like she is actually a mermaid, most importantly she absolutely got into the character and her performance really warmed my heart and made me connect to her ethereal, beautiful spirit. she was the best part of the film and i absolutely enjoyed her playing Ariel, she was wonderful and it's kinda sad that she got so much backlash, i love her so much she is the best, but THEY SHOULD'VE MADE HER HAIR MORE RED, MORE VIBRANT. they took away every visual piece that made Ariel so unique and... iconic. they should've kept the seashell top! and again... as i said the eyes are not a big deal but it would be nice if she had blue eyes. i am not throwing a tantrum when i see a black person playing a white character, and NO... I DON'T BAWL MY EYES OUT EITHER. i may care about looks but the spirit of a character matters the most. other races and cultures are allowed in white media but let's not over do it, for example... lets respect Snow whites pale skin, and no don't try to tell me that her heart is what mattered in the story not her skin, but it is literally part of the story. so yeah... let others races and ethnicity step in white stories, and also let them have their own new, amazing stories, sending love to all cultures and races, i mean it. and thanks for reading my other "novel".

But the main reason why the actress was chosen is for this skin color which has become Disney's new policy. Really even you would never have imagined a girl like that to incarnate Rapunzel after a while stop lying. After personally the film, I don't really care, it's going to be a flop like all the Disney Remakes, because a lot of people don't like the Disney Live-Action Remakes.

I admit i was quite foolish and childish to be against those fan casting, i even had a long ass argument with someone from tiktok. I expressed my honest opinion on how i dont like avantika or even other white actresses to play rapunzel, i just don't see how they all resemble rapunzel at all. I also think that using white actresses and fancasting them as POC characters, is very wrong but i do get their point. Ny suggestion for disney is, why dont they just make an actual movie that actually represents POCs culture with people that actually have that race and ethnicity instead of changing an already designed and made character into an entirely different person to continue fire up the people?? As a POC myself ive always hated how other asian people doesn't really get their own representation but i wont force my own race to a character that doesn't even possess my race's features. But at the end of the day my opinion is not always the same as everyone else's 😅🫶🏻

Colorblind casting is only believable and genuine when you have limited options, like a school play which is limited to only whatever students go there. By hiring non-white women to play what is obviously white and white-coded characters like Ariel and Snow White, it's like they're giving a middle finger to every white actress and white person in existence, like none of them is good enough to be playing their own characters. Nobody doubts the casting of POCs to be playing live-action versions of white characters is anything but pushing an agenda and checking boxes off of some woke, DEI list. Quite the coincidence it effects only or mostly main characters, but the villains are spared.
