I'm in the UK, and had a planned surgery to remove a section of colon due to diverticular disease - it was planned as an open surgery and I was told I'd be in hospital for 14 days afterwards - it turned out to be 3 weeks because of post op complications. They found cancer in the bits they took out, so started chemo 6 weeks after discharge from hospital. You can't have chemo until the wounds have healed. Ended up having a few rounds of chemo interspersed with hospital admissions for biopsies, scans and MRI - also to fit a POC line for nutrition because I couldn't keep any food down after the chemo. That was 12 years ago - and I'm still here - it took a good year to 18 months to fully recover from the effects of the treatments and return to work. Anyone who has been through it isn't questioning her time off.

American doctors don't know the normal medical procedures in England. We, in the UK, tend to get longer in hospital after surgery - there's no insurance companies refusing to pay for longer stays. Most open abdominal surgeries are a standard 2 weeks stay.

I had my gull bladder removed I was in the hospital 10 days it was so infected so it depends on your condition in the U.S. my son is a doctor graduated from London St. George medical school his a American student and he knows the difference between American and the U.K. practice in medicine.
