To be fair im pretty sure the early EARLY gomu gomu no mi pistols were straight. At least the episode 1 certainly was. & arc on it would literally probably be easier to cg because they could fuck with the perspective a bit and literally cover parts of it depending on the angle.
@lordmarkquad4470

If you want to get technical, think of it as when your holding up a punch. You make your arm very stiff and flex your arm to throw a very hard punch. The same would apply to Luffy’s pistol punches. That’s why in the anime you only see his punches stiff and only get bendy when he releases or pulls his arm back like a rubber band.

I've followed this production from very early on, keeping track of casting, seeing the sets, up to this point of finally seeing the trailer, i'm stoked. You can tell there is a *huge* amount of respect for the source material, and I have a feeling these are the right people at the right time. My only genuine concern are "rude fans", which you can already see on a lot of social media pages. These are people who barely read the manga or anime and only complain about recent anime adaptations like Cowboy Bebop etc.. I really wish this show and the creators nothing but the best, they have my support, and most importantly; Oda, the creator is 100% behind this project, which gives me a LOT of faith. @@jimbeam-ru1my but it’s literally here. Their outfits are taken from manga’s color spreads for example. There’s fckn fight between zoro and baraque works recruiter, which was mentioned in one throwaway line somewhere in Alabasta saga, I’m 100% sure that most of the readers don’t even know that this fight is canon in manga, and they are using it here to hint later events. That’s a great move. Actors casting was made according to Oda’s “what ethnicity would characters have if they lived in our world”. Ships are practical and not cgi. Fckn producer is a active member of one piece community for years, he was a guest on events like reverie, and that’s way before show’s first announcement. As a person who's worked in film and animation both. All that matters for me is the "feel" of the world and the Dynamic of the Characters. These 2 things are all that matters. I think what will be more important for the immersion is whether or not in the fight scenes the characters look like they feel the physical impact of the move. Like when Luffys arm snaps back into place, there is quite some force connected to that and the body should react to it. If this is missing I think that would break my immersion more than the quality of the CGI stretching.

I don't know about modernization so much as making it work in live action. This is dialogue I can easily see in the '90s. Though I get what you're referring to. It appears to grasp the core of the characters while changing them to work in a western live action series. If Luffy was just loudly proclaiming how great his crew was while laughing and clapping his feet, followed by Zoro and Nami leaping into frame together facing the camera saying "We're not a crew!" it absolutely wouldn't work. This captures much of the same dynamic in a way that works in the new medium. It's definitely going to be a challenge to try to do that for the whole show but I'm hopeful. Which considering I was completely dismissive of even the possibility of a Netflix live action One Piece just a year or so ago is pretty good indicator that everything they've shown and talked about behind the scenes indicates that they are trying so fucking hard to make this work.

In the case of the CGI stretching, I think it can work if they mix good cartoon timing with good body acting to make it feel like it's happening in response to the actor's movement. In the anime Luffy does recoil a lot if you think about it, facing the ground after a punch. The problem with the Alvida Punch is that the fist just pauses in the air instead of slowly changing direction without stopping. And then there's also that the punch consists of a camera zoom in to Alvida's face, so there isn't any body acting going on there to look at. But in earlier scenes Luffy punching looks just fine. Btw, I would love to see you try to pronounce the Ñ! I won't be judging you if you don't nail it, but treating it as an N feels weird, it's like calling Sanji "Sani", it's basically like a missing sound and makes me double take what I just heard.

Looks decent, honestly think casual fans and first time watchers will probably enjoy this. I think the problem most fans have is they don’t realize this is suppose to reach an entirely different audience, this is suppose to be introducing new people to the world of one piece so it doesn’t exactly need to be perfect to die hard fans standards. Just needs to be fun enough for a casual fanbase to enjoy. Look at shit like Spider-Man, has literally never had a completely faithful live action adaptation but still massively successful to casual fans. That should really be the goal here

I think it's worth pointing out we did see one other use of Luffy's powers in this trailer besides the Alvida punch. In the execution yard in Shells Town when fighting Marines. However, it's fast, the punch stretches into the background of the shot, and it's heavily motion blurred. I expect this to be how most of the Gum Gum moves to be shot during action scenes. I think special attention is given to the Alvida punch because it is the first Gum Gum attack in the show. If the show rearranges the events like the anime so that we get everything with Koby and Alvida before Luffy's backstory, that would be the case. Or maybe we simply don't see Luffy stretch in the backstory. Either way, I wouldn't expect every future Gum Gum move to look like the Alvida punch. Probably only the Gum Gun Bazooka's that finish Buggy and Krieg, the Bell that defeats Kuro, and the Battle Axe that defeats Arlong.

What about MCU, or any other superhero movie? Its not (JUST) about the CGI, its about the lack of dynamic movement from Iñaki's part. For me I think one of the most crucial things is simply the chemistry and humor of the Straw Hats. And granted, I do believe that it will take more than just one season for them to eventually figure this out. I agree with feeling mixed with Luffy making that tension line. It felt a bit weird for Luffy because Manga-Luffy couldn't read tension in a room if it came and slapped him in the face. Seriously, I think there are scenes where he walks in a room and there's silent tension happening and he asks what happened or gets all happy thinking they're starstruck by him, or he assumes it's someone else on his crew. And then he eats or loudly asks for food if hungry. Either way manga Luffy is very selfish in that sense. But this Luffy may be more into being a peppy team leader.

I still can't completely put my finger on it, but I did get the same weird feeling when Luffy was being portrayed. I think the big thing everyone needs to keep in mind, for this and all adaptations of things from different mediums, is thats its own thing that has its own different intentions then the original source material. An example (of a very successful one) is the spiderman ps4 story vs the original comics. Almost everything was changed and moved around to fit the new story, and many things visualy were redesigned and adapted for that platform. And when things work and you arent looking for a 1 to 1 copy, things can turn out to be great as their own story. So my point to someone watching the show, regardless if they have seen one piece or not, is that its much more important that its entertaining and a good story, than if its 100 percent faithful to the manga.

Then I saw the Mario movie trailer and went “that looks good, I’m hopeful.” While everyone else debated how terrible it was gonna be on the grounds of Chris Pratt being Mario. Now I see live action one piece trailer and I’m hopeful because it looks like a lot more thought and care went into every part of it than has gone into many other live action anime adaptations. I'm wondering how accurate they could have been to Luffy's characterization in the manga to make him likeable in the LA? If you put his carefree attitude and lack of input on screen. A lot of moments he would just be there, laughing. While that's the Luffy we all know and love, I think a more vocal/realistic version of what Luffy is will work better. They need him to be human, now that he's being portrayed by a real person. I've never seen Luffy as anything close to a realistic character, because he defies so many natural behaviors people have. Yeah I'm with you. Plus, Luffy makes sense from a shonen perspective. Dumb, happy, Labrador energy guys who just kind of go with the flow are pretty standard. It's an accepted trope of shonen writing going back decades. Probably because it's quite easy to empathise with a character like that as a kid who also loves just messing around and having fun. But in live action, there needs to be a little more maturity and gravitas there. An audience of western adults is less likely to sympathise with a main character who's so air headed and goofy, he doesn't even catch the signs of an obvious disagreement in his friends. I think playing it more straight and having Luffy be more: I don't quite understand the extent of this, rather than: I have no idea what's going on lol. Is a lot more likely to catch the audience and get them on board. Adapting something to different mediums requires a lot of work!

Well, actually, a lot of early Luffy was blank stare, mean mugging. Guy had 0 thoughts behind those eyes of his a lot in the Romance Dawn era - that stare down with Kuro or just watching Krieg do his thing while everyone panicked was pretty much Luffy in a nutshell. He's never been dumb - just daft and a bit ADHD. He knows how to speak well enough - even knowing words that surprise his crew from time to time (though other times he stumbles over them too) so it's not like he's a barbarian or something. He's just had a very patched together education and lack of real socialisation. Later, once he gets his crew, he becomes a lot more :D but before that, while he certainly has instances of it, he's also got a lot of o_o and "Hm, wish I had some popcorn while I watch this shit unfold". XD Frankly, I'm not worried. Anime Luffy and manga Luffy aren't the same (anime Luffy comes across as a bit more psychotic sometimes. I think it's the movements? idk, but sometimes I'm like "wtf Luffy" towards the anime where I'm not when it comes to the manga XD). There's going to be things the live action choose to change or show in a different way. It was never going to be a 1:1 representation but I think our LA Luffy will be just as much our beloved captain as the other two. A little different, but different isn't necessarily _bad_.

I had a similar thought about Luffy noting the "tension among the crew." I felt like anime Luffy uses a much more hands off approach to captaining, to the point of comedic exaggeration. However, given a second's thought, I think this Luffy is going to need to say things like that because in the anime the crew dynamics take shape so much slower. What you said about giving this version of the story a chance to be and some room to breathe is really important. It is strange that prior to this trailer I was in a mindspace of looking forward to this show and it possibility of being good, but also equally aware that it could be a disaster, and this trailer has actually not moved that needle at all. There's moments of promise in the shadow of Netflix's pile of prior failures.

Set designers need a raise, honestly impressed with using Oda cover outfits for the live action, I heartily laughed seeing live action Buggy, but it was more like I can’t believe they Suicide Squad Jokered our Flashy Pirate King was funny and sad. Loved the CGI Lord Of The Coast, from that one scene it looks like they absolutely perfectly cast Coby, I liked the look of Zoro’s hair, if that was Mr. 7, I’m glad we finally see him on screen as more Strawhat backstory is welcome to see if it’s cannon. The Gum gum pistol honestly reminded me strongly of the movie Son of The Mask featuring a similar type of character and a cartoonist which I have mixed feelings on that being such an old movie. All in all that’s a lot of praise for this compared to what I expected. Absolutely everything else I saw from acting to line delivery, how the costumes look, the ships, that dialogue, cutting content to reorder it, not even bothering to get Sanjis’ eyebrows right, too cheap to even make the already too cheap Morgan’s Giant artwork look decent. The sword fight choreography where Zoro just randomly slices at the ground instead of at his opponent who didn’t even need to dodge. Was bad. In 40 or 50 years after this flops it might be worth trying again and I’d be happy if the set designers came back then.

Fish CGI is actually surprisingly a lot easier than other things too, the textures are well noted for really synergising with the strengths of CGI (this is why Davey Jones from POTC still looks fantastic all these years later). Luffy's powers i feel could have been handled better. Stretchy human skin is notoriously difficult in no small part because its a thing we're VERY familiar with doing something that we're very used to it not doing; on top of being the exact opposite as fish textures, human skin is basically CGI's weakest point.

The problem is Netflix seems to have, more or less, a 3 season cap on shows that aren't MASSIVE hits. And even the massive hits tend to go only 4 or 5. VERY few have gone beyond that, and this show's price tag will likely mean it's not going to be among the outliers. So given the massive scope of the series, it's just going to be difficult to find a point to leave. I agree East Blue is the easy part to adapt. Alabasta is also probably reasonably accessible. It's after that, figuring out when to really leave. As the series gets deeper into its mythological side, it's going to be harder and harder to find an exit point. It's almost like the show might be best ending at 1 season, even if it is good, when the entrance to the Grand Line can serve as a fitting climax to the story.

Nami for example is intelligent and thoughtful but also she has a very over the top temper, yells a lot, and is violent. Usopp overacting/lying, and coward like persona as well. Sanji’s closet pervert vibe and over the top romantic side. Zoro is probably the easiest to pull off as he is the most consistent: stoic, serious, determined basically at all times. It’ll be interesting to see if they balance it out more and keep it more realistic or really go for it to be be faithful to the anime. There are pros and cons for both imo.

Zoro can be as dumb as luffy and that's what I'm hoping that they go that route 😂

I said the same exact thing about the "I'm sensing some tension". I told my buddy, Luffy wouldn't say that, he's the kind of person who would just laugh and either walk away looking at something, or wanting food.

I'm still very concerned on how they are gonna do the fishman, not so much Arlong cause he's rather easy to make but someone like Hatchy can't be written out cause he appears later on in the story and he would be extremely hard to do with the six arms.

I had the same exact reaction to Luffy saying "I sensing a little bit of tension amongst the crew". He would never sense such things or kinda even care about it. Only he would care if other crew member would kill or nearly kill another, insist of them leaving the crew or something along those lines.

Luffy is actually very sensitive toward his crew feeling, he just have his own way of showing it. Not allowing chopper to go nurse Usopp after Luffy f*ck him up is one of those

@@Zagryzaec But those are bit different. Although we don't know what made Luffy to say that in the teaser but there has been many disputes in the crew and Luffy is usually just in the middle of it laughing. Also if Luffy would try to be mediator in a dispute he would say something which would try to directly solve the situation or be the wanted outcome. But again we don't know what is he commenting and is it just a playful comment so I digress :D You are very correct that he deeply cares about the crew and shows it in his own way.

@@TobiUchiha767 agreed - out of character. He would just grab both of them and jumped overboard. That would certainly released tension within the crew.

It would be quite funny if the live action turned out to be good, considering every other netflix adaptation was shit for what u think would be easier to film than OP with it‘s very unique art style

I think Kung Fu Hustle combined cartoony goofyness with serious tones quite well, I hope they use it as a sort of reference.

Hear me out, I think as long as the story that is being told feels the same, while hitting all the emotions that I felt when watching the anime, I think this will be a successful live adaptation.

The tension among the crew got me too. It’s because luffy for me is very aloof and doesn’t pick up on social cues. He’s constantly getting reprimanded (usually by nami) or getting in trouble for not reading a situation and blurting out whatever is in his mind. I don’t think he’d notice if there were issues between his crew. I think if they were fighting he’d just laugh or ask if they could make him some food.

The CG for Luffy made me think of Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle CG just updated a little. It has that kind of stretched clay look like the older CG or the time looked. Overall, I'll probably like it regardless. I don't let nostalgia or anything like that ruin my ability to enjoy new content for things I enjoy. They're all their own thing and I'm just happy to have something new to watch.

I can't wait for you to share your thoughts when the show comes out. I'm really hyped for it because it means more One Piece for me😏. I do have mixed feelings about Luffy's stretching but honestly, it's to be expected. We haven't figured out how to make stretching limbs look "natural".

Usopp doesn’t have a long nose and Sanji doesn’t have swirly brows. 0/10. 😂 I’m feeling positive so far. Sure it probably won’t be amazing but you can feel that the passion is there. It’ll be enjoyable to watch if anything else. I can’t wait to see how many Easter eggs they hide in the backgrounds. And yeah, we can’t expect a 1:1 adaptation since anime and live action are completely different mediums. Changes have to be made since things that work in one medium just wouldn’t work in the other. Zoro looks cool. And Buggy’s design is pretty crazy. I’m keen to see how they do all the East Blue antagonists. Nami’s actress is really pretty. Her hair doesn’t bother me too much but how they did go about it is an interesting choice.

The most important part will be, to make it their own. If they stick to the anime/Manga to much, and just try to recreate it, it will allways feel like the lesser version. I remember the Cowboy Bebop RL version. Its been actually a cool show, whenever they tried their own thing and introduced their own twist on things. Like the scene where Spike and Fay fanboy and flex about their old cases. Those where not the characters that i loved from the anime, but rather own original characters with interesting parts. I hope they can find a good balance in the OP Show.

The way that luffy's arm looks in the gum gum pistol scene looks fine to me. Like they're going for "as he stretches the area being stretched becomes more 'rubbery' texture" stylization.
