We Need To Talk About Rebel Moon

Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire is the newest film from Zack Snyder and Netflix and stars the likes of Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher and Charlie Hunnam. This was clearly a stunt by Netflix to recharge the Release the Synder Cut phase once again. This film is so incomplete and hollow that it might not be worth watching. Rebel Moon (also known as Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire) is a 2023 American epic space opera film directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, based on a story Snyder conceived. Its ensemble cast features Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam and Anthony Hopkins. It is set in a fictional galaxy ruled by the Motherworld, whose military, the Imperium, threatens a farming colony on the moon Veldt. Kora, a former Imperium soldier, ventures on a quest to recruit warriors from across the galaxy to make a stand against the Imperium before they return to Veldt.
Following a brief limited theatrical release, Rebel Moon was released by Netflix on December 21, 2023. It received negative reviews from film critics. An extended cut is set for release in early 2024, and a sequel, Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver, is scheduled for release on April 19, 2024.
Plot
In a distant galaxy, the Motherworld is a militaristic empire fueled by centuries of conquest and war, through Imperium soldiers, the Motherworld's infantry. The current king welcomes a daughter, Princess Issa, who possesses a rare gift of healing and resurrection. This is taken as a sign of redemption for the Motherworld, as the royal family has grown weary of conflict and hopes that Issa will unify the empire not through force but through compassion. Instead, Issa and her parents are publicly assassinated during her coronation, and Balisarius, a prominent senator, declares himself Regent and renews the empire's conquests with the support of Admiral Atticus Noble, a sadistic military leader.

Snyder was the one that came to Netflix to split it up as a PG-13 movie. He chose to do this to himself. Because he wanted to relive the whole Snydercut thing.

Even when Snyder was given a budget to reshoot new stuff for his film, and could actually address some of thr plot holes and criticism he got for his film, he spends it adding about 30 minutes of slow-mo music video introduction of the characters, and screwing up the aspect ratio to be a moron, even though he was given a golden opportunity to do better. It was like when a teacher hands you back an assignment to redo with all you're mistakes highlighted, and he doesn't do anything to address his issues. Now he's doing everything all over again.

I liked Army of the Dead. I liked 300. I liked Sucker Punch. The Watchmen glossed over a lot of the important themes and subtext, but generally was alright. All of those films are good because Snyder can concentrate on filming scenes and not worry about the writing. Few directors are good at both directing AND writing. Snyder just isn't one of them (at least, not yet). For someone not as good as writing to write an epic is like trying to get someone like me who struggles to cook for 3 meals a day to cook a Michelin star gourmet meal. He completely missed the mark on creating an epic and what makes epics so good. For most epic movies, at their heart is a very simple story. Star Wars is, in essence, a simple story about a reluctant farmboy who tries to save a princess but the plan goes sideways. LOTR is about a well-meaning nobody who wants to destroy a ring, knowing how it destroyed his uncle. Rebel Moon tried to jam so many things into the film that it forgot to tell a single concise story.

Yeah I think 166 for 1 and 2 together. I don’t know if it was a good move ? No. But yeah , I see the train of thought. We’ll see. I have loved all his movies so far EXCEPT this one and the 2 zombie flicks ( just because I find the genre boring) . The streaming business is so confusing to me.
