Hello everyone, this video about this My Little Pony redesign has been on my mind for a very long time. And the time for me to share my opinion has come. If you don’t agree with me, it doesn’t really matter to me. Just let's try to be a little bit nicer. And share some support to the original creator Magda! Hope you enjoy the video!

@@goontender_lowercase. oh definitely! the classic “we included a minority character but we're not going to develop/give them an interesting personality at all and we will get them out of the story at the soonest possible chance but hey guys look we're so ✨inclusive✨”. y'know, the kind of people who just do it for the internet points n stuff and don't genuinely care for these groups. While it's most certainly an issue, I think it's important to use the proper term for cases like that, which is tokenism, rather than “forced representation”, as the latter is used almost exclusively by people with the wrong intentions. To quote a comment I saw on Instagram today, “We cannot let bigoted people dictate the language around these conversations”!

People don’t understand that just because something has good representation doesn’t mean it’s “woke”. I personally don’t see the mane 6 like those designs- but it’s not because of the representation- it’s just because my idea of the ponies is different than this artist’s- and that’s ok!

As a black person, that image doesn’t have “good representation” it’s kinda racist.. brown people and black women have been characterized as fat, and manly for years, the artists intent might not have been racist, but the end result is.. I’m not justifying people making fun of the art, but it’s kinda racist man

One thing i genuenly hate is that people take some headcanons for the characters (like pinkie pie being black) as fact and attack anyone that doesnt draw her as such. Pinkie is pretty ambiguous, some people can interpret her as being black, others interpret her as having an amish family line (her family in the show seem to be amish inspired in a way). And yet people will bash anyone that draws her as the second version. Its hypocrisy. If people are allowed to draw pinkie as black, then they should also be ok with her being drawn as white. She is a pink pony whos "human race" was never specified, it isnt like race swapping in that case since there was never one.

Ive seen both black and white designs pretty for pinkie, though i see her more as a white readhead, doesn’t mean im gonna go hate someone because they made her different of what i imagined, I’ve seen many people on both sides hating each other , I saw someone i used to follow that said “if you don’t draw pinkie as black, block me” 🫤🤨and I’ve seen artist on twitter when they draw her white someone goes with the meme”why are you white?” Everyone has a different interpretation of the ponies and that’s fine, people may not like all the designs and that’s fine too, it’s just your interpretation of what you imagined how they look like, people/artists should stop this fight about how they should be in a “humanized” version, at the end, their are still ponies, colorful ponies

The art is adorable. Also from the fact that their horses, horses of all sizes exist too. If you were to turn that version rarity back into a horse she'd probably be a mini pony or something. (And yes I know she's supposed to have dwarfism in the art) When I see art that's redesigning animals to be humans, I usually think, how would this work in their animal forms. (It helps how I understand how the art works since I only draw animals) plus pinkie looks like someone I would be happy to accept a hug from, she just had that welcoming feel to her in the art.
@Dip-Star-1489

For me, whenever I humanize animal characters and figure out the skintone, I usually check if the fur’s color tone to see if the skin should be warm, cool or neutral toned, the shade of color used to show how dark/light I should make the skin, and the characters reference to their cultural identity, or simply check out the voice actor. For example, if I were to humanize Rarity, she would have a pale skin with a cool tone and be of French descent. Another example would be if I redesigned Applejack to have a warm toned, “honey” skin (don’t get why skin tones are named after food, that’s just the closest skintone I could find) with Texan roots.

im an artist. im also white, of average weight for my height, and not physically disabled. when i started out drawing, all the humans i'd draw were plain, basic, boring, and they were all young able-bodied white girls like i was at the time. today, ive been drawing for over a decade now, and ive also come out as LGBT+, come to terms with my diagnosed neurodivergence, and my father who im very close with has become an amputee. ive also met lots of people who are so different than me who had different experiences than my own, and i became friends with them. ive subconsciously been using them as inspiration, and ive realised, i just find it so fun to draw characters who are different from not just me but from basically every popular character out there. i only started branching out and really practicing how to draw different kinds of people within the last few years, but something ive noticed is its so much more fulfilling to do so, my characters dont feel plain anymore, they have interesting designs. most of this is from me growing my own skills over the years and understanding how better to use aspects of a design to my advantage, but meeting people firsthand who were different from myself and characters i see online, who were also artists and drew characters like i'd rarely seen before. they inspired me to be creative and embrace difference unlike the society around me taught me, and i couldnt be happier with my art. and i also get so happy seeing others doing the same, drawing people who are different. it makes me happy, im not part of most minorities that really need more representation, but i still feel a sense of pride getting to see them get the positive rep they deserve. i wish difference was normalised. sorry for the long paragraph pfft, but thank you OctoInkz for making this video, it really voiced a lot of concerns i had about the general populace online and how we all treat each other, and hearing your words made me feel not alone.

I'm a concept artist, so seeing 5-10 different designs of the same character is pretty common to me. Sometimes, I just want to create a character with a walking stick, it's not every concept, it's not forced, I just want too and it can be pretty common. Plus, I see a lot of double standards with the people who moan about the 'forced inclusivity' redesigns, a lot of the time people love and may even overuse things like vitiligo or heterochromia but then b//// about a character being fat/black/etc. I really don't understand it. It's just another reason for me to never make a TikTok account. I, honestly, adore seeing how other people interpret a character. The design may not be my cup of tea, but the artist has put a lot of effort into their work and I'll always respect that. Plus, I think of it as pretty good inspo. I may not use the idea for those characters because that's just not how I may view them but a project down the line I could. And if you don't like the art style, then you can just ignore it- close the page- go onto the next post- anything other than bash the artist for something that doesn't and never will affect you. If you really must say something, then do so in a matter that is constructive, not destructive, you never know, their art could in fact closely correlate with their mental health or a fragile desire to get into a hobby. Overall, I love seeing redesigns because it's so similar and inspiring for my own works. And I truly hope that people can one day grow up and that they don't scare away hopeful artists before then. (Sorry, this was a bit of a rant...)

i hate the idea that women can't "look like men". it's inherently transphobic. who cares if this fictional character you don't have to look at is slightly more masculine? who cares if this random transwoman in public whom you're never gonna see again in your life has an adam's apple? or large muscles or a sharp jawline?? that doesn't make her any less of a woman and the idea that someone is gross for looking less feminine than the white standard is disgusting. i don't see pinkie pie looking like this personally, but i still think that the design is cute because there are real people who do look this way and dress this way, and they're just as beautiful as any other

7:00 SO TRUE!!! Even my brain has been wired like this from regular media, shows, movies, etc. People will subconsciously think of white characters as the "default" character, when it shouldn't be that way. When I see group of white characters/ocs, I don't think much of it, but when I see a groups of poc characters/ocs, my brain for some reason has to think about it for a second because we're so conditioned to believe that there's such a thing as a "default" when it comes to ocs and stuff. This is something that I'm aware of and it's not a big problem I have, but it's just scary that simply growing up with the regular media you're shown (the media with lack of diversity, especially in the past) can change your mind in this way. DIVERSITY IS SO IMPORTANT!!! (but not forced diversity because that's soulless)

As a leftist, I acknowledge that most people who complain about forced rep are just whatever-phobic. BUT: it is possible to force it. I want people to make art of characters how they see them. But way too often I see people make characters a certain way only because they feel they need more diversity of whatever kind. It's nice when characters have a range of skin colors, but don't make a character black only because you see the rest as lighter. It's just more enjoyable and genuine when people draw characters how they see them, and most of the time people see the mane 6 as a very diverse group, and that's great!!

Let me give a shot at this… “Forced Representation”: When a piece of media includes one or more persons considered to have “minority” background without giving them the same respect in character design and/or character writing as would be given to a character whose background is considered the “majority”. Hmm, well would you look at that. I can’t see how this definition applies to the art in question! (It could also be because my definition sucks, but I’m in the camp that this is as valid an interpretation of the Mane 6 as any, without leaning into big-wig self-congratulatory territory)

If I hear the term "forced diversity" being used unironically I can feel myself go feral instantly, it's such a stupid thing to say and, like you said, not even realistic cause people of all kinds of shapes and colors and backgrounds exist out there, and it seems so SHOCKING to these haters, lol. On that topic, I remember years ago when this incredible musician on yt made a cover of a song from Final Fantasy and when she released it, she received a lot of backlash for her creative choices; she even commented in the description she was sorry "for making such a bad rendition" and I thought it was SO WILD, because her version was different from the original, yeah, but still really good, and I was upset that the backlash got to that point. I remember writing a comment how ppl are allowed to dislike things without being an asshole about it, bc there's always a real human being with feelings behind the other side of the screen. Long story short, lots of people answered me how I was being "a sensitive snowflake", how "FF players are insufferable and woke" (I never played FF in my life but that's besides the point), and how I was "asking to be bullied" for saying stuff like *checks notes* ....for saying that MAYBE, we shouldn't just comment vitriolic hate to strangers online cause not only bc it's just fucked up, they would NOT say that in person, to their face. I deleted that comment bc it was just overall so upsetting in so many ways, but it just proves that these sort of people dogpiling on artists, amateurs or not, for sharing their views on something (that being diverse pony redesigns or a cover with a different arrangement from the original), just dont care about anything but themselves and what THEY want and think it's "acceptable" or "beautiful".

I don't think the map redesign was made by a beginner, I'm pretty sure the art was just made by someone who has a bit more of a semi realism style, and the faces look a bit more realistic then cartoony, then what people online like and are used to. that's just my opinion though. edit: also can't forget the fact that when people have opinions of mlp characters races or body types (even though their horses), THE FANDOM GOES WILD, as someone who headcanons Pinkie pie Irish and ginger, I've had a few arguments due to that.

I ain't gonna lie, when I saw Rarity and Pinkie designs at the beginning of 0:03, I didn't liked how they looked. Especially Rarity. When I say this I don't intend on being rude or spreading hate or anything like that. I just didn't like Rarity clothing and height. Just didn't fit with the character I believe. As for Pinkie, it's just the build of the design. It something I don't think fits with the character. Besides that everything else I have no issue with. The clothing, and the hair, I think they're fine. I did like Apple Jack design it just looks just right. The clothing, the pose, the build, it just right. 10/10. My second favorite would be Twilight by just the look of the design. But thinking about it, the design doesn't strike me as being a human version of Twilight. But instead as a separate character of it own. And lastly there's Rainbow Dash. I like the hair cut and the clothes of Rainbow Dash. I also like the pose and the build of the design. Lastly when it comes to Fluttershy there's not much I have to say. I just personally didn't like the jacket she wearing but that about all I have to say really. If someone has comes this far in reading this long comment of mine, the reason I commented in the first place was to describe my thoughts processes when I saw the redesign of the human version of the main 6 as humans in the beginning of 0:03, in text.

Yes that was what i was thinking. Even though its bad to say like ‚forced representation‘, it really feels like it for rarity to me. Because it doesn‘t fit her character, i don‘t recall when she showed signs of like being a person with dwarfism. They just gave it to her for (seemingly) no reason. Its bad to say it but it has to be said 😢

Honestly, at first, I thought the exact same way as the commenters...the "forced representation" part. Then I thought about it. In my human MLP designs, I am gonna make Pinkie Pie and Applejack black...then I was like, damn you really got a good point. You have thoroughly changed my mind on the topic of forced representation...which does happen intentionally in some cases, but yeah, I have changed my mind.

It also kinda goes the opposite way too. I'm really tired of people calling me racist, or fatphobic, simply because I don't draw it often. But why don't I draw it often? I've only been an artist for 3 gosh dang years, I'm still LEARNING! I'm starting to draw POC characters more often, but not much simply because I'm still learning stuff like hair, and clothing designs. I'm not racist because of that. As for Plus size characters? I'm self-taught, and I only just started teaching myself anatomy, so I'm still trying to learn basic anatomy before I start trying to add onto it with different weights. I'm not fatphobic because of that. It ends up really hurting when I'm called things like that when I'm not, I'm just not good enough to draw those yet. (Sorry for the long rant comment)

I’m sort of shy of commenting on videos, but man !!! This video is super great and honestly took the words out of my mouth about this type of “trend” on social media and what not. It’s genuinely frustrating when people whine and cry about shit like this ! Forced diversity (or tokenism) is bad !!! I can agree !!! But for gods sake, let people live ! There’s other types of ways that people look and all over what fictional animal characters look like as humans ! Not everyone who makes diverse characters is trying to gain “woke brownie points” or whatever, maybe they *are* like that IRL, you never know. Just ughhh, dude. There’s another time to talk about the whole “oh if you want more diversity, make it yourself with original characters and an original story” since that’s also a huge issue, but I’ve yapped long enough. Good video 💕‼️

Can’t lie I was a little closed minded about this all because I didn’t fully understand and thought the characters HAD to be a specific way. Like, personally, I see rarity as a health freak that would try all the diets to stay as dainty as possible because she cares too much about her appearance (not saying bigger people don’t care about their appearance or health), whereas pinky pie definitely indulges in her baked goods and doesn’t give af, she just wants to have fun. I do love that they made rainbow dash and apple jack muscular, it fits so well with their hobbies. I did fail to see these are my own headcannons and not everyone else’s interpretations as well so I appreciate you making this and opening closed minded people up to the actual truth that it doesn’t matter how you draw the characters and we all have our own representations of the characters. Might as well draw them however we want and try not to let other people’s opinions on the ponies ruin how amazing our art is or influence our decisions because no matter how you draw them it doesn’t matter and you are just as talented and skilled as any artist and there will always be someone that loves and appreciates the way you draw things. Your representation of the characters is just as valid as any and all and it’s actually quite cool to see how people draw and interpret the characters so differently now that I’m not focusing on what I WANT 😭

Just one word… YES! As a beginner artist and editor people have been SO MEAN to mean, calling me a sped bc of my art style, which I don’t approve of bc I have a cousin who is autistic and my best friend is autistic and I think we shouldn’t use disabilities as a way to insult people. People have been mean to me just because of the way I choose to live my life (I’m a therian and a furry :3) and someone told me my editing sucked even though they confessed they’ve never done it before. It’s hard for me to want to post things when people just say ‘I can do better’ when they haven’t drawn in their life. I prefer to keep art pieces I love to myself because I don’t want the internet ruining my perspective on them. One piece of praise isn’t worth it, if I want people to like my art I’ll show it to my friends and not some people on the internet who refuse to accept that I’m different than them and I can draw how I want.

I took three characters from the troll films and made them humans and one of them is dwarf because in the films the character is an adult but is shorter compared to her friends. I’ve been bullied constantly for my art, wether it be online or in person, and trust me, it does effect the person a lot. Okay, i will give you a definition of forced representation that isnt racist fat phobic or ableist. in this situation of drawing mlp characters as humans (talking about that image), i would call that forced representation. why? my answer is because those characters arent like that in the show. in the show, rarity is not that small compared to them. pinkie pies skin is not that dark, i do not mean that in a racist way. if you switch a skin tone chart and pinkie pie to black and white, you can see she would not have as dark of skin. however, apple jack, twighlight, and rainbow dash do have darker skin. so, basically to sum this up: i believe that in this situation, "forced representation" would be when you take a character and change their features from the origonal version. bringing up this example again, rarity is not a dwarf in the show as a pony, so she shouldnt be a dwarf as a human. with this writing i mean no hate to black people, people of any race, people with disabilities, people of larger size, the artist who created that image, this youtube channel, or anyone else. Have a good day.

(Sorry if it’s too long) Tbh, I like the pinkie pie, apple jack (her being black bc pinkie is her cousin) and rainbow dash, but only because it seemed like it had enough thought into it. The characters aren’t even bad on their own, I think it’s just the way that they added so many characters with “unconventional” traits that people don’t like. which is fine, but it seems like it’s the only thing that defines the character designs except for the ones I mentioned. Like some of them don’t really have the original pony’s design referenced. So it would just look like one of those things that corporates do to “pander”. We’ve seen it so much that people probably think of that when they see this. Even as a POC (Caribbean descendant) I hate seeing companies try to make it all about race. “Ooh look we made Ariel black” like I would appreciate it more if they made a completely new black character. It shouldn’t JUST be about race or ableism or whatever. I feel like a character should have their qualities as qualities and not make it carry their whole design. I design my own characters, I made them mostly diverse, ex: all of my Ocs are non-human beings that live in space, they look human-like so making them all a certain race doesn’t matter. But I did make most of them all pansexual or some aro/ace. Just hearing that makes it seem weird right? (Like all of them?), Just like how people would view Magda’s designs. But I made them that way because they are not from earth, so they don’t really care about things like gender and gender norms. On the surface, all of them having unconventional (as in it’s not usually normal to see no offense) identities would make it seem “forced” but with purpose, not as much. I do appreciate the designs if Magda did acknowledge that they did that becuase MLP should be about diversity. But then again though, they don’t have to always point it out. Again the designs weren’t even bad, I just hated how people responded (either being harsh towards the art or calling ppl racist for calling it “forced diversity”). I do agree that unconventional art does get unnecessary hate, and this is a good example. Which isn’t ok because they don’t deserve hate over something so simple, but I do still understand why SOME people say “forced diversity”. I’m sure not all mean it like that.

1) I can understand not liking another person’s art or redesign. It’s okay to not like it. But being rude and cruel about it isn’t okay. Just because you HAVE an opinion doesn’t mean you have to SHARE that opinion, and some people need to learn that. I personally don’t like the redesigns, but I wasn’t going to go bully and belittle the artist over it. Everyone has to start somewhere, and they’re trying their best 2) I can’t say this is 100% correct or applies to 100% of people who have this idea, but I think there’s more to the forced representation than people understand. I think people are used to the main cast being predominantly white, straight and able bodied. So when people do redesigns and now every singe character is a person of color and part of the lgbt+ community, it might feel like it’s being forced. It’s a complete 180 from what was originally there, and instead of adding in a few characters to have the representation they want- every single character is different now, so it might feel forced. Just like a lot of the Disney princess stuff feels forced to people. Like “Oh, look, we changed! We’re not racist, look!”. Not saying im right, I could absolutely be wrong, but that might be where people are coming from. “Forced Representation” is being thrown around a lot lately, unfortunately 3) The art community can be so toxic sometimes and it’s sad. It should be a safe place and a place to lift each other up and help each other, but it can be so mean sometimes :(

Hey hey. I might be too late to comment on this. But I came from a disabled family. My mom has cerebral palsy. My dad has face palsy. And my left leg is pretty much useless. They had to implqnt a metal inside to help me move. I wven somtimes need crutches. And I Just wanna say tgat. I think making a cast like. Oh we have one disbaled persom, one black, one asian, one gay. And one white. Is actually forced representation. I wouldnt be happy if they made Rainbow Dash disabled per say. Because it takes away from her character. She is a sportman, and pretty active and abled bodied. I also didnt like the fact That Rarity was fat and had dwarfism. Because her matching the beauty standarts of their universe was a big amount of her personality and character. Like if they draw Scootaloo with a prostetic leg. That would have been awesome. Because Scootaloo, even tough the reason she cant fly is becasue her dad is an earth pony, is can be consider3d disabled. I also dont think people hate disabled people. But they Just cant see a character with a disablity. Because it doesnt makes sense. And I get it. I think the people dodnt like giving main 6 too many different bosy types is because in the MLP fim, they all had the same body type. Like different bosy types exists in Mlp universe but the main characters had the same body type. Thats why people might not like artists giving too much diverstion to the body types. And lastly, the art looks like its been traced. I am sorry. But at the end. If you need to bully a beginner artist because they draw your favoirte pink horse black. The problem is you. Bad English.
