As a Nikon hybrid photographer, I think this is a big win for Nikon. I'm glad you think switching from the RF to the Nikon Z mount will be fairly low impact, that is very important for the video system. I expect Nikon to generally keep the Red brand, what Nikon most needs is to get some Red filmmakers as marketing collaborators. And they need to produce a Nikon Z8R[ed].

Sony has already slowed down a bit, as the Sony A1 was released just over 3 years ago, which is a long time in Sony years.

It's a stretch to say Red will drop the RF mount - that's pure speculation. This is a ballsy move for Nikon and I think both companies will benefit from this. Nikon acquires some great IP and Red get the backing and support of a much larger and enduring company with decades of experience in optical/imaging engineering, manufacturing and distribution.
@getabey7 ай бұрын
Nikon has wanted to be in the video/cinema line for many years. They did the math to put a lot of money into resources or acquire an established company in business. They went with the latter. So, the future change would be (my speculations); - RED will eventually become Z mount, and RF mount might not be the future, though converters will be available. - Nikkor will come with a new line of cine lenses or a renewed RED line with Z mount. - Nikon could also have a few video-centric bodies and more budget options than RED, which will stay as their cinema line. - RED might also work with new sensors and codecs for future Nikon bodies, especially to trickle down the tech for global shutter sensors. - Nikon's resources for manufacturing bodies would benefit RED. - Nikon's AF is better than RED now and on par with Canon and Sony. So, RED's new cameras and existing lineup. - Nikon's philosophy of providing insane firmware updates might also expand to RED. Overall, this is a positive game-changer for both companies. The deal is better than 'RED', acquired by a manufacturer established to produce digital cinema cameras. With Nikon, they are most likely to stay as a true subsidiary and won't eat up RED.

The Z8 launched two weeks after the lawsuit settlement last spring. It would be interesting if the Z6III has the Red codecs. Or if they announce it with the firmware plan, just as they did with the Z9. While it makes sense to be leery about a "This will be in a firmware release" feature, a Z6III with a Red codec firmware expectation would be more acceptable.

Nikon has acquired interests in a lot of companies lately. They then collaborate with those companies rather than trying to integrate them with Nikon Corporate. Nikon will not screw with the RED culture or innovations. They will NOT change the RED branding. They will NOT dump the RF mount, unless Canon removes RED's license to use it. RED may make the a Z mount version of its cameras. Because of the large dimensions of the Z mount, it can be adapted to any other mount. So a Z mount RED camera with a series of OEM adapters to PL, E, RF, L etc is feasible. Nikon could make RED a set of top class Cine lenses (branded RED).

Rumours of Nikon's demise were just that ... based on ignorance of who Nikon is and their corporate structure (Yes, they make binoculars ... and a few more things besides, including medical devices, semiconductor lithography systems and a *lot* more). This acquisition stands to brighten the future for RED. I'm biased because I started my pro imaging career with Nikon camera systems 4+ decades ago and made my first decent videos with a Nikon hybrid. I own the Z9 and Z8, both capable video cameras. The Z glass is terrific. Who knows, maybe I'll be a RED owner some day! 😀

I believe nikon will let Red run its business as usual and we will see some exchange of technologies from red to nikon and nikon to red. The introduction of a hybrid camera like c70 wont be of much worth to the cinema line cameras. If nikon adds an active cooler and some red codecs+compression to the nikon z8 or a similar body then it'll be pretty good camera for hybrid shooters who want to shoot films but either dont want or cant afford a cinema only camera. I am sure nikon won't make a camera that will cannibalize RED. Nikon will have to learn this from Canon and Sony.

Let us be adults and not deflect nor create false narratives. The main issue is NOT Nikon video nor Nikon glass, it is inconsistent quality control. Nikon went from glory and great history to the KING OF RECALLS. Shooters NEED gear to work as intended, not to be checking serial numbers, sending new cameras in to be checked, and the recalls serviced. I recall I had a little Nikon I loved so much I used it until it literally fell apart, and I bought two of them, I used them to video inside rinks because I am a professional skater. Now when I am spending anything more than $2000 I want exactly what is advertised. I buy too many products from too many different companies like cameras, mixers, turntables ,samplers, routers, computers(MAC and PC),and when something gives me issues, I give it away, take it back, and I have no use for it Out of hundreds of items I suffered through ONE recall and that was with my Xbox, which I still have. What I am NOT going to do is buy Nikon cameras unless they are PROVEN like the MIGHTY D850 and the MIGHTY Z9. I do not want to hear no BS about, 'mine was ok',and all that other mess, because I have too many choices so I do not have to take a chance, roll the dice, etc,etc.

@@michaels8607 I'm willing to see what happens. I feel this will more positively impact the industry than negative. If a sunglass manufacturer can start a cinema company from scratch, why can't Nikon add value with its existing knowledge of sensors, the Z8/Z9, great color science, manufacturing etc? Nikon is a legacy brand that just expanded. I've always felt that RED was always ripping off its customers throughout the years with their ridiculous over the top prices. Competition eventually wins out. With that said, RED makes fantastic cameras. They are well built, have great color and have earned a well deserved place in cinema. But for me, their pricing was just ridiculous and greedy.

Let me alleviate your worries… Nikon will not rebrand red. That would be insane. Hollywood loves red cameras and they will remain separate as well as together. Nikon will add red technology to their cameras, but they also help improve things such as auto focus. reds auto focus sucks… Nikons auto focus is amazing. Eventually, that will all come together. But no fear, you will not be losing the branding. Although Nikon might put a red stripe on their cameras. Lol.
