Tamiya USA dropped the price to $337usd recently for the VQS. But I still look at kits like the Bigwig, and Terra Scorcher that went for $200usd with full bearings and (BW) included special GT motor. I was wondering if Tamiya fixed the weak areas on the VQS, quess not. Thanks for the video, made my decision to pass on this easier.

I have a VQS kit still in the box. I haven't turned a single screw on it yet, and I won't until I get more parts in for it, thanks to this video. I already have a 4000Kv brushless motor/ESC combo waiting on the shelf, plus the upgraded aluminum G5(extended)/G6/G11 parts from rcevologic, as well as most of xtraspeed's aluminum chassis bits, plus the aluminum knuckles/uprights from Yeah Racing. The pieces that I'm waiting for are all of the bearings that you've recommended here, as well as a two sets of carbon steel axles from Yeah Racing. I'm building it from the start with all of the pieces that I want on it, so that I don't have to go back in and tear it apart to rebuild it the way that it should have been from the beginning. I also have a set of the Tamiya hi-cap shocks, which have been discontinued. They cost a mint, but I wanted them so I paid for it. I'm really looking forward to this build. I was heavily into RC in my teens and early 20's, but stepped back as adulting took over. Now I can do it again, and I'm going to build every single one of the cars that I wanted as a kid, starting with this one. Thanks for the very informative videos, and I'm truly sorry about the loss of your friend. EDIT: The bearings and the loss of your friend were mentioned in other videos, my apologies.

To be fair, the specific plastic Tamiya uses is part of the problem. It's just regular ABS, albeit really high-quality virgin (not recycled so not degraded due to recycling) ABS. This particular part could probably benefit from being made from nylon or another plastic with better durability, or even a chopped fiber composite.

Tamiya rc survival was mainly due to re release gear towards the baby boomer and silent generation. If I am between 12 to 18 year old, I don't think I would buy Tamiya. I would go for Serpent, Traxxas, Mugen, Yokomo, Axial...as they are that much better. The reason I still buy Tamiya is because I grew up with it and some of the kits are so backwards (compare to today, which is not fair) that I went and bought them. I will seat out the VQS as it goes for US$290.00 here (maybe 10% discount) is still quite expensive for 98% plastic RC. In the end is up to the individual consumer to walk away or drop some coins.

Halfway through building mine at the moment and I was surprised at how many of the metal parts (sway bar braces etc) that I thought were going to be stamped from sheet metal are actually cnc machined parts. I’m pretty sure that the amount of machined parts in this pushed the price up a notch. G part replacements are being looked at by a friend right now who is measuring up the bits from my kit.
@flynnz3 жыл бұрын
I already have most of the G parts made and on thingiverse. :) Go get um'
@richuar3 жыл бұрын
@SteveQ you’re not wrong! From a machining point of view G11 would be a bit of a task. I’m wondering about having the flat portion cut from 1mm carbon fibre then putting that in a silicone mould and overmoulding all the bosses, lumps and bumps on it in a high strength engineering resin...mind you that’s not a five minute job either!
@flynnz3 жыл бұрын
I could CNC the G11out of aluminum (using the same 3D model I made for 3D prints), there are also carbon parts out there too, but I would much rather have the flex with the new plastic part or even a 3D printed part. G11 is not really an issue unless you have brittle old plastics like from the originals. The new plastics and/or 3D printed versions would flex quite nicely, so I wouldn't worry about it snapping. I would also highly recommend not using rigid parts (metal, carbon, etc) on a classic version as this will most certainly guarantee the surrounding brittle parts will break all around it. Might look cool, but it would kill the car. Also, the reason G11 is so thin, is because it is designed to save the frame. It is actually a really good design and should be left alone. Hopefully, the plastics they use on this run don't age as bad but even if they do, 3D printing will be damn close to injection molded parts quality-wise in less than 30 years I would wager. TL:DR keep it plastic!
@markscotchford41593 жыл бұрын
I think it is really good that you are not nitpicking but being honest and straightforward and giving your opinion, based on facts. I really am shocked at the prices. It seems Tamiya are seeing what other companies are doing with releasing and pricing and thinking they could have some of that. Just goes to show those of us in our late 40's now really were seeing the cutting edge of RC back then but are these better than what is made now? Take Tamiya Durga or Dark Impact for example. Are they better or better value or both? It is a shame what companies are doing but I guess it is supply and demand. If people buy them at that price they will sell them. If we take the Kyosho Optima though, that release was very expensive and seems sold out. But I think a) it was way ahead of it's time and well designed, and b) it has a plethora of metal parts. Happy Christmas to you and all your readers.

all Tamiya stuff seems to be going up in price. i know their new plastic kits are much more expensive. with the VQS the molds have already been amortized so there's basically no cost other than production. That's where the real cost for kits are. The only reason for the higher price would be Tamiya is doing limited production so they have to charge a higher per unit price. and judging by the fact these are sold out everywhere that fits. you just can't find any VQS' widely available and those you do find are going for even higher prices.

@VestedUTuber3 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't even need to go Al. A carbon fiber nylon composite like Onyx or NylonX should do the job more than well enough, and you can print it at home as long as you have a printer with an all-metal hot-end, a hardened nozzle and a heated bed. People really tend to underestimate FDM 3D printing simply because their own experiences are limited to PLA and ABS - the latter of which is the same plastic Tamiya uses on their models.
@flynnz3 жыл бұрын
@@VestedUTuber I already made the parts, you can find them on thingiverse. And I agree, there is no issue with using 3D printed versions of these parts (honestly even PLA!). They flex quite nicely and I would have to bash the hell out of it to break it (which I would never attempt on my OG anyway hah). Putting rigid replacements would be a terrible idea as it would put stress on the surrounding parts. G11 especially so as it is designed to flex to save the frame from stress. That is why it is so thin and it's actually a smart design.
@VestedUTuber3 жыл бұрын
@@flynnz In that case, nylon would probably be the best bet, since it flexes quite a lot while also providing a lot of strength. And then carbon fiber nylon composite would be a good choice for the surrounding parts, since the material is quite rigid but behaves like nylon upon failure of the carbon fiber strands.
@flynnz3 жыл бұрын
@@VestedUTuber I agree. Honestly, G11 is a pretty good candidate for a 3D part because most of the stress will be on the platform that has the layer orientation in its favor. So much so that like I said, even PLA seems fine (I don't bash my car, but after over a year or so, no issues at all). But for sure, you can use stronger filaments for peace of mind. Though, I still like the idea of using something weaker like PLA just so I know that is the part that will break lol.

Wasn’t even aware of these until about 1997 In fact I had no idea the Vanquish is as old as it is (always thought it was an early 90s car). In December of 1988, the shelves of all the model shops anywhere near me were filled with Avantes (along with Cats & Optima Mids). Maybe those boys that did the carbon fiber upgrade for the kyosho phantom could help with these delicate VQS parts ? @gavin @rckicks

Much like its Aston Martin namesake, the Vanquish (or here the VQS) is very beautiful, but rather too expensive and unreliable... Shame, I had considered treating myself to the VQS, silly money and all.

It's a shame. It is so beautiful! So sad, as I do not buy shelf queens.

The fact that after spending $300+ you have to buy certain bearings that are not included is ludicrous. Add the "VQS" change and it loses it's charm. This is a great kit only for those who had one as a kid and missed out on the avante and egress. Otherwise it's a pass. I'll just buy the body set and stick it on my egress.
@thegreattreon01773 жыл бұрын
So Tamiya really think that people are going to pay $400 for a brittle rc model that'll probably never be put on the ground? I'm sorry but if I'm going to pay $400 for any rc model, I better be able to launch it to the moon and watch it fall back and keep on going!

There is also the fact that it isn't even fully ballraced

Yer I’ve always wanted one so I put a deposit down. Then I found out the price 🤬🤬🤬 yer it should come with full race and the g parts should be better. And a nice motor and the body should have not been painted (maybe cut out low) So iam going to put a spot tune in get the bearings it’s missing. Iam going to try and get some nice road stile wheels and tyres 😃

I think you are meant to buy it, build it and drive it. Let's say you get 10 years out of it, thats £33 a year, just get on, build it and enjoy it 🙂

I know it's a re re but come on they cannot be serious. I love tamiya and have 9 of their kits but I have also bought an arrma typhon 3S which has radio gear and servo etc ie rtr and it's bullet proof and fast as hell for similar money and 1/8 scale to boot.

For me Gavin it’s the price... Dare I say a bit to much???. No bearings and standard motor!!!!. I guess there will be some who will like the idea of a new batch of spares available all be it Re Re parts.. For me the price means it will have to wait as I want a top cat before they have gone.. And the Mardave cobra.. must have one!!!. As I remember the Mardave kits from back in the day
@RCKickschannel3 жыл бұрын
It comes with bearings, just not 100% of them for some random reason. Cobra and Top Cat are cool cars for sure.
@nickrobertson24503 жыл бұрын
Humm. Yes overly priced considering say the 2018 Bigwig. Not full bearings? No special motor or alloy shocks? In my opinion its £100+ over priced. I concur with your assessment! I bought the recent 2011 Avante (my first Avante) rere instead.
@CarminesRCTipsandTricks3 жыл бұрын
No way can I justify that Price.... Back when I bought my Avante in 1988, my friends who wanted one, ended up with the Vanquish - because it was considerably CHEAPER. Yet still performed well. Sure the price can be reasoned away with the production limitations, COVID, Dollar/Pound/Yen exchange rates, asinine market prices on used stuff..... But it still doesn't justify what Tamiya is charging for this - with a stupid Silver Can, same rubbish Shock Towers, and only a partial set of Bearings... The prepainted Body was the nail in the coffin. ONE upgraded bit - Knuckles! Still doesn't justify the outrageous price. 😖😞😠😠 NOW with strong rumours of a rere King Cab, my all time favorite, I'm worried that Tamiya will want about $500.00 for it!!

U wrong about this Brand I really don't think I are doing what you do by blowing smoke up well I definitely will take your word, will you recommend a different company? It could be ³² years before I could afford a new kit , Longevity name of the game
@RCKickschannel3 жыл бұрын
I like loads of cars from different manufacturers. Kyosho, Tamiya, Team Associated, Tenth Technology, Mardave, Schumacher Racing and Kamtec just to name a few. It all depends on your budget and what you want to do with the car.
@opj57913 жыл бұрын
Its neat, but the price is way too steep. Look at what you can buy from Arrma and Traxxas for similar price points.
