WE NEEDED A WIN

I’m not gonna lie, seeing each room come together in the house build still gives us a rush. You truly can’t see the shape of a room until all the walls and ceilings are covered.
When we finished covering the walls of our loft bathroom we both agreed that this is going to be SUCH a cool room in the cabin.
With the lines from the vaulted ceiling a 12/12 pitch roof, this may be one of my (Sara’s) favorite rooms so far.

And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on KZbin. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.

One day your house will be done! The kitchen will be stocked, beds will be made, all of the furniture will be placed, and so on. Then you both will sit down together and look around and you will become overwhelmed with the satisfaction and joy knowing that YOU built this house. It's slow-ish in coming but it will come, and I will be so happy for and proud of you two!!

well with a shower I would have to use a KERDI shower system and that makes sure it is waterproof and it lasts forever

This is a fiberglass base. Should be pretty indestructible and waterproof. I've seen the KERDI system and it looks very cool.

You know, they really aren’t delayed anymore. We are currently moving all of our stuff out of storage from our old house because it’s selling, and that’s exactly what started after we got done with this portion of our house. We should have an inspection next week, but it will just be a progress inspection to keep our building permit up-to-date.

Why did you choose a small shower ? Technical or price reason ?

Well, it’s VERY SMALL bathroom so it was either a larger shower or have space for some shelves/cabinet and a towel rack. We chose shelves and a towel rack because this house is really lacking in cabinet/storage space. Also, we had a super big shower at our old house, and it turns out that you only stand in the part where the water is flowing. The rest of it is just kind of dead space and just extra tile and grout that you have to clean. We’ve had a huge house before this one. We know it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

You can still install cement board just stop the board 6 inches from the shower base. Then when you install the shower base you can just cut 6 inch strips then tape like drywall.. Also as great as all the work you guys have been doing- why would you just put a small corner shower in your dream home. A full comfortable shower is what you should be installing. Just my opinion. I think you will be disappointed a month or two down the road.

I’m thinking you may be thinking that we just put in a base that we’re going to tile over, but that’s actually a fiberglass base and we installed it according to the directions

Possibly for you, but it's our house so we make choices that you may not make. It's a REALLY small bathroom . . . . so we were limited on space. We had a HUGE shower in our old house, it turns out that you only stand in the space where the water is falling on you. It's not like you bust out a line dance because the shower is bigger. lol. Having that knowledge, we decided to go with a smaller shower so we could use the other space for a towel rack and some shelving.
