@airwess3369Ай бұрын
Many comments in here about not staggering the OSB. Im no roofing expert, but, after building a home in the Philippines, learned that no one there uses any kind of underlayment. No wood. No paper. No tape. No sealant. Just the metal roof over the perlins with umbrella nails. I took it a step further and at least used butyl tape between the seams and roofing screws. But one building was already built and before i could replace the existing roof we took a direct hit from a Cat 5 Super Typhoon. That old roof along with building took zero damage. Every single home/building thats built with hollow block and rebar took no damage. That same Typhoon would've completely flattened every single wooden structure built in America. Sometimes the simple way is much better than the overcomplicated way. Even the well built bamboo Kubo homes with thatch roofs stand up to the Typhoons. But every single American wood style homes got flattened. Many have 1st floors with concrete and 2nd floor with wood. And those with the 2nd floor, the roof was nowhere to be seen, but the 1st floor intact. Funny how ancient ways of building last thousands of years. But the number 1 way to build homes in the most advanced and powerful country in human history builds homes that rarely last a century and get destroyed with practically every severe storm.
@zax8570Ай бұрын
As everybody in here already said: rule of thumb in construction is to never use the stacked checkerboard pattern (on anything structural) when you can use the staggered brick type pattern. It is so much stronger that way.

Starting from the bottom to keep water ALWAYS running down hill. If installing it vertical the edges MUST always be tar culked. Depending on what roofing material your going to use. In this case with Steel sheet panels your safe, but to shingles, tile or slat. Especially for driving rain regions. This would be a leaking mess.

Great progress on the dome roof, Jess! The main roof is looking good too, Jim. You're probably tired of hearing this but the sheets if OSB should be staggered to maximizing the strength of the structure. I'm not sure how much structural rigidity the straw bales will add to the post (but I would still recommend adding wind braces to the top of the post at a 45-degree angle). The wind loading on roofs out there are significant. I know hurricane strength wind is fairly common in the southeast. But typically you don't get that in conjunction with feet of rainfall so it's not so much structural load as a hurricane. It's always better to overbuild a structure a bit than having to repair or rebuild it. Still it's great to see how much progress you've made this summer and early autumn.

Your roof membrane should come all the way down to your facia to keep the rest of that wood from being soaked. Don't know what you have in mind for lateral bracing but with the winds you experience you certainly are going to need some. Right now, you have a bunch of poles sticking up out of the ground with nothing bracing them from any sideway forces (wind). How are you going to water proof that step at both sides of your upper/lower roofs ??? Again, as much wind force as you have, lots of your rain is going at quite a angle instead of straight down. ???????

As I recall they were originally planning on building a second dome, but given the time and effort involved with the first dome and the issues they ran into, they decided to build a pole barn for most of the rest of the house instead. I think it's more expensive since it uses a lot more lumber, but I believe (though they haven't said this) the extra income they're getting from KZbin and sponsorships made it more feasible. Plus it's much easier on their bodies, not having to move that much dirt again.

@dennisrobbins5451Ай бұрын
Hey , I'm sure a great amount of work went into getting the particle board on the roof. However, you may have made a couple of mistakes. The first one being you did not stager the seams. Was this on purpose? The second one is the edges of your particles boards do not line up on the rafters. Was this intentionally done? I have not watched the entire video yet, but if the beginning was how you did the underlayment that may have also been applied in a fashion that might cause you problems down the road. As the first or begining run of the underlayment should be at the lowest part of the roof then you work upwards. Overall, I like that your channel is all about trying new ways of being self-sufficient. I just hope these things don't cause you grief in the future.

Good question, as the OSB is a structural support for the roofing material, it is not a waterproof layer and so sealing those seams serves no purpose. There should be a transition flashing / dripedge at the bottom of the slope, and under the roof felt, or what is the waterproof layer under the metal panels. This prevents water runoff from curling under the roof edge and soaking into the OSB. Agreed with another commentor, the structure should have crossbracing at the outside and horizontally from side to side. Siding on infill wood walls will serve this need. Good luck!

From what I have seen on other builds, the OSB that is made by the ZIP system has a film already adhered to it to waterproof it, a green colored film. That tape works with that film as a waterproof, weatherproofing during the build and is intended to give longevity to that panel. As applied to untreated OSB well, it’s not clear what the benefit is as water can seep through the untreated panels, if it gets under the roofing material. Watch Simple Life Reclaimed and look for their roofing work, still to be finished but they used the ZIP system.

Staggered osb joints, add a fascia board at the end of rafters to end nail osb boards, Run Waterproofing horizontally not Vertically, no need for flashing osb to one another, don’t staple waterproofing creating holes in the waterproofing. Hope this helps.
@lokilyesmythАй бұрын
Why did you run the underlayment vertically? Water can easily seep sideways onto the OSB, which swells when wet. It should be run horizontally, you could just go by the writing on the product. You need a much larger lap when you join vertical seems. Also with a low slope you should double felt/underlay to prevent wind from pushing water up onto the wood. Seems a shame to do all that work and have leaks down the road. Not to mention that with no stagger pattern on your OSB the roof is weaker.
