Ditto on 1.3 acres! Mine is split with a circular drive, so I’m doing the upper half where the house sits first and just mowing the lower for now. Splitting it into two zones makes it easier to plan and work, even though the whole thing will look continuous at the end - as if the driveway came afterwards. I am planting a few shrubs in both places so they’ll be the same type and size. Anyway, it’s the only way I could handle it in my head without freaking out - and also be able to afford it!💰😁

Also not letting them fruit until a proper structure is formed. Some people deformed their little fruit trees like this. I personally wait for three years plucking off immature fruit then I let them fruit until their hearts content. I always thin because trees are long lived so proper pruning and care will bring so much reward for the future.

Also, think about what varieties of fruit you want to have, because one tree will produce a lot of fruit for you to deal with! Will you be preserving the fruit? If so, get varieties that preserve well. Will you have apples just for eating out of hand? Get a variety that will store well or one you will want to share or sell, as there may be more than you will need. These are things that may not be in the forefront of our minds when choosing fruit trees. You will(hopefully) have these trees producing a lot of fruit every year for a long time. Some years I am wracking my brain to think of something else to do with my sour cherries, even though I do love them! Also, depending on your climate, some years the blossoms may freeze and you will have no fruit that year. We sometimes have apricots and sometimes not, they bloom very early, while it’s still quite cold. Happy planting!

But if spring winds hold off then all is good. So now I put pots of flowers over by the tree first, as soon the flowers can take the weather. Here in New Zealand, to help feed the newly planted tree and to help it retain some moisture during the summer months, we put a pile of daggy wool down in the planting hole, then place the tree on top and fill in with the dirt.😊🐑

I am so looking forward to seeing the development of your garden area, I am living vicariously through your gardening experiences and plantings and yes you’ve motivated me to get out into my garden early on for planning and prepping for spring time.

Hi Laura! Biostudent here! Bees will forage and collect nectar as far as they can, as they have other hives to compete with, as well as other species! So they would absolutely travel to the hypothetical tree you're talking about :D Fruit trees typically have lots of nectar too.

Looking forward to seeing your orchard mature. Yes to Aaron sitting beside you. Your both have great ideas. We hear your voice may as well join Laura ! Blessings to your sweet family.

That’s so exciting! It will look amazing Laura! Can’t wait to see the full project come to fruition! Yes honeybees will not travel beyond a mile if they have enough flowers within that range. If they don’t they will even travel up to three mikes to find food. I wish I had your soul here. We have heavy clay plus tons of huge rocks in our area make it harder to create a uniformed design. I planted a couple pear trees last year. I want to plant a couple peach trees this year. Can’t wait till I pick my first fruit!
