The barbarian-librarian joke is extra funny to me ... because that was literally the design brief of my partner's first character in 5e. Grell the Learned was a human barbarian who ran a travelling library - basically one of those Scholastic book fair trolleys. She's trying to put together the texts of her tribe because she's tired of oral history and wants to get a version of it which hasn't clearly gone through several rounds of embellishment where the acts of strength have gotten steadily more ridiculous 😅

This new D&D campagin is so exciting! I'm totally vibing with the horror folklore vibe. Very fitting for the autumn season. The new characters are already super fun, very curious to see how they all play together in the future. I like the more serious approach too. I really enjoyed that in Blades in the Dark and in Deadlands, so I'm happy to see it in a D&D setting as well Will be looking forward to the future episodes!

I'm glad Andy and Ellen know Counterspell, it's the best spell in the game in terms of sheer drama. The best bang for your buck you can get out of Counterspell is if more than two characters in the scene have it and, and you have a process of: - Enemy One: Casts a world-ending spell - PC One: Casts Counterspell - Enemy Two: Casts Counterspell on the Counterspell - PC Two: Casts Counterspell to Counterspell the Counterspell I've never been in a campaign where I've gotten it past three in a row before, but one can always hope!

I can see robin and morvin's situation being concluded 1 of 3 possible ways 1:tag team, Robin is awake at day morvin is awake at night they both get equal time in control 2: fusion, they merge into 1 new character who is the best of both (my person favorite option) 3: they get morvin a body (a but broing in my opinion but it'd work)

Firstly: Johnny I'm gonna need that recommended movies/vibes/etc list. We got the album you listened to but now that I've heard there's additional specific inspirational touchstones I need them all. I mean- pretty please? Secondly, I'm really excited for the exploration of the characters in this world! I agree with what you lot said about how it's fun to have these characters and this world made with intention of specific themes and knowing ahead of time it'll be a continued thing, rather than taking what was built for a one shot and expanding it as it goes. Both incredibly fun, but I love me some focused narrative. And great to see that the classic OX humor is still here- a perfect mix of silly fun with friends as well as existing within a deeper story. I'm also biased because the vibes and themes here are some of my favorites lol. I've had characters with similar cores to Luke's and Andy's, and those are some really fun stories to explore. I love the point Andy brought up about both people wanting to be in control, the bit about Morven wanting coffee to stay awake so she doesn't give way to Robin, whom she seems to hate. And Robin being clueless, but not fond of waking up in unexplained places and would presumably not be fond of someone else trying to keep him out of his own body. The character I played like this had a really cool moment where he hated the parasite that pushed him out of his body and thought it was evil, but the parasite was just chilling, so every time they switched the OG guy would be like "what did that beast do now" and the answer was go to a petting zoo. Made for some incredible tension among party members who knew both characters and took sides, as well as perpetuated some juicy character misunderstandings because my characters wouldn't remember what they did when the other was in control and then base their understanding of the situation on incorrect assumptions. It's also incredibly fun as a player to jump between different characters that oppose each other but are stuck with each other, and despite being in the same body are doomed to only understand the other through hearing what they did second hand. Incredibly fun to roleplay different perspectives and be able to poke at things with different characters because you as a player know that it would make an interesting story beat because of what you know about the other character you're playing. Tons of potential for tons of different fun juicy plots and I'm so excited to see where Andy takes it (and where he gets taken). The fact that Robin doesn't even know yet that he's got another person in him is so exciting alone, nevermind thinking about what his reaction will be when he finds out! Or if Morven intends to keep it a secret from him, or what the party will say as mediators between the two. So much I'm excited to see progress, yet if I go on more it'll become even more of an essay than it already is, so you're safe for now. I'm at work during episode premiere times, so most of the time I unfortunately wont be able to catch them live, but the second I'm off the clock I'm rushing straight here. See you friday!

Just a note: Jane says she "likes the character sheets that come out of the new PHB". They don't. You need to buy character sheets separately, or use their app. Of course, you can always just print your own sheets, but the official ones are no longer included in the book. Which is a small beef to have, but a beef I have nonetheless.

Our group recently retconned their 2014 characters. Not all the way back to Level 1, but where it made sense, we added in some of the new features (Rogue Steady Aim, Cleric Divine Spark, Weapon Mastery for Martial classes, we swapped in the Hunter’s Mark table for the UA WIS modifier). Plus we all got to dive into Tools to make existing proficiencies actually work for some purpose. I really like how Origins influence starting Ability Score modifiers. So much cleaner. All in all looking forward to running these new rules, updated spell descriptions, and so on.

It has been nice seeing a lot of the changes in the new PHB (like the monk rebalancing and the removal of contested rolls), and the fact that they keep it mostly straightforward to bring in old material makes up for the weaker aspects like the very restrictive backgrounds. They've also already started correcting the mistakes in the online version of the PHB (like Goliaths, grappler, or summon giant insect), so print buyers be on the lookout for your errata in the near future!

Cool characters. It'll be interesting to see how the healing stacks up against the damage here. (Barbarians and specialised healers are always a fun combination.) I could be wrong but I feel like this might be quite a high wisdom party with less charisma and dexterity (although Morven and Happen presumably have a bit of those respectively) so it'll be fun to see our Oxventurers adapt to that. Of course no party composition is a bad one if everyone is enjoying the game but I suspect the party member in charge of opening locked doors here might the barbarian. Other than that with psionics, sprites and illusions I feel there's even more potential for shenanigans than ever before.

I kinda agree with Jane on this. I often ended up with the role of healer myself because the rest of my party all wanted to poke everything with sharp "pointy sticks" and someone had to keep them alive. The secondary role didn't really bother me; I prefer playing a long range character.

So this cadence die is d20 but I'd like to know which numbers it replaces. In the video it's said that a 12 can be rolled as ¨mediocre roll¨ so I suppose it would be 1 1 1 1 1 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 but I would like to hear the reasoning behind why a 1 2 1 4 1 6 1 8 1 10 11 20 13 20 15 20 17 20 19 20 distribution wasn't used

Luke chose to use a 5×1 endcap and a 5×20 endcap for the least disruption of the die, keeping the unmodified numbers contiguous (and the 1s contiguous, and the 20s contiguous). *I know dice are numbered to set patterns, but those patterns are designed to evenly distribute the numbers around the dice so picking specific numbers leaves a die with weird modifications strewn all over the die.

I really love everyone's new characters but If I had to pick a favorite it would be a seriously tough choice between Andy and Luke's characters

Burning question: did the players know about each others characters before the first session, or are they discovering things about each other at the same time as their character? Thinking about things like Morven that weren’t apparent from the start, or possible other future secrets characters may reveal. Did the players all know that was Andy’s plan from the get go, or were they equally as in the dark about what the normal human man’s deal was?

Thanks for making this! Great to hear more of the thoughts on the character creation - one thing that confused me in episode one is that Luke only seemed to be firing his bow once per turn, but if he's 5th-level he should be making two attacks same as Lug? Does someone need to poke Luke to make sure he's doing the right number of attacks?

I'm sure he made at least one extra attack - there was a wacky luck shot immediately followed by a regular.

Probably still getting used to that cause dob just attacked once. They will get used to the skills in due time. Same for Lug not using reckless attack. I was more worried about Lug having a 12 AC when unarmoured defense with a +1 in dex and a +2 in con would be 13. So i guess he wears a leather armor? And without it would be faster? 😅

@@Blackdracko7 Dob had an extra attack, but was mostly focused on spellcasting. Luke used it to attack after casting a spell a time or two before realising that wasn't how it worked (and pointing that out to Mike a few chapters later.)

You def learn from your mistakes like not having counterspell or in my instance, not having shield and getting blasted to bits by magic missile. Now I always have shield.

Most of them are spell casters. They also may have forgotten, especially considering Mike is the only primarily martial character

@extonjonas6820 That's fair and I assumed it was just forgotten with all the excitement. Rangers do also get weapon mastery at level 1 so Happen could have made it happen. All good just interested of there was a specific house rule of not using them.

Hearing Andy talk about his character was oddly creepy for me as I'm called Robin and that character is weirdly similar to the one I've recently started playing after ending my forever-DM streak (using Undead Warlock rather than a sorcerer).
