TeacherPhilEnglish hey sorry for the late reply ! A standard 40 ft container to HI is going to be around $4K, but you’ll also need it pulled out of the port with a drayage company which could be $600-$1000, and then load it onto a moving truck because it isn’t going to a warehouse for distribution. You get 2 free hours to unload that trailer into the moving truck which would be a nightmare too, after that, there is detention pay, which is usually 35-$50 per hour. It’s just really expensive!

By all means, do not move to Hawaii! I'm born and raised here on Oahu and its rough. We do not work minimum wages either. I've been working as a licensed insurance agent for 5 years and my husband works for the Hawaii state Capitol with a combined household income of $90,000. Hawaii is very expensive; everything from food, utilities, to housing. My husband and I are on Baby Step #2 and we are slowly climbing out of student loan and consumer debt. We downsized to 1 vehicle and we carpool to work. If you're going to rent in Hawaii, it will most likely be a studio or 1 bedroom apt which if youre lucky will be at approx $1,200-$2,500 rent per month.

I paid off 65k of student loans in 3 years... to pierce through the interest of $500 a month it took $750 in gross income... just to touch the principal. It took me roughly $105,000 in income to pay off $65,000 and that was with aggressive, rice and beans, dedicated, hateful, bitter repayment. It was worth it in the end but do not underestimate what it’s actually going to take to repay it.

People do it all the time, if he’s getting his doctor of chiropractic in Iowa he probably goes to Palmer which means they live in the quad cities. Super cheap to live there (median income in Davenport is $44,000, so half of the population gets by on less than that). So with an effective tax rate of 25% you have $125,000 left after taxes, both people are working side hustles of $1,500-2,000/ month means you have an extra $36-48,000/ year to help live off of and you’re done in 13-14 months. Won’t be easy but it’s definitely doable if you don’t listen to the whiners on the internet telling you it can’t be done.

Let's assume they do earn $170,000 a year in Hawaii that would be a take home of about $9,500 give or take a month after all the wage taxes are taken out of their paychecks. Dave says they will have their student loans paid off in 18 months, that leaves them with $2000 a month give or take to pay their housing expenses, food, gas, car, insurance, and any other expenses. So many unknowns here, but 18 months to student loan free is extremely optimistic on Dave's part. I would say at least three years.

As a person who has lived in LA, Chicago, Bay Area, Indiana, New Jersey , Toronto in the past 10 years and moving again in dec to nyc due to work, unless you own really expensive items, just sell furniture, car, tv etc and move. Way cheaper that way. However I would live in a cheap place with decent salary over expensive place with slightly more salary. She is excited due to opportunity to live in Hawaii and I don’t blame her, I am sure many would be, but they are just married for two years, once the family grows and they plan on buying a house in Hawaii, I think they will call Dave again about what they should do because things are expensive. It’s not that bank won’t give them loan but I would rather not have a million dollar loan over my head. That’s just my opinion, different strokes for different folks. When someone asks me what is the best place I have lived so far, it is without a doubt Indiana, pace of life is slow and real estate is dirt cheap, I was able to save fixed 1K per month on just housing since I moved from San Fran at that time.

Joey McMahon Jr Agreed that’s why as an update I convinced my boss for my move to Dallas rather than NY and he finally agreed and we moved to Plano in Dec. Salary remains same and when I calculated savings vs living in East coast, I will be saving 1500 fixed cash with no state tax and cheaper housing. Being married with a child, I have no desire for a NY city life. I would rather save money and have more space for my family to grow. But that’s just me.

Cal, we’re debt free, we live below our means, we’re on a budget and living very comfortably and content . There are jobs out there that still pays great if you’re willing to work HARD, (physically😬) and you don’t need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a degree!!! It is POSSIBLE!!!

I've been to Hawaii and it's expensive! Food in the grocery store is double the average price of what you would pay on the mainland. These people are going to hate their level of debt even more while the cost of living is draining their income out there.

As an Iowan she does not represent our state very well. Chiropractors in IA can make six figures and she was making $90k/year which in IA is a good income. She seems to be prioritizing Hawaii and the island life over numbers and reality because if the cost of living is 2X as much in Hawaii then that would be the same as her husband making $42k/year in IA. Some people.

Sounded like the living off of 70K a year tripped her up. I wonder if they are on a written budget yet. She said they just paid off 5K but making 90K+ now (plus if he makes anything now) that's not much. Sounds like there's the possibility they are in the crowd of higher pay but don't know where their money goes. Hopefully it all works out well for them, at least they're trying to get better educated with finances and get their stuff in order.
