I love all of your videos Valerie! Your family is so sweet and Tim is one in a zillion! However I have a request. I noted that you are going to start to feed the hummingbirds. This is wonderful! They will appreciate the nectar from he feeder in your beautiful yard! BUT…please note. Metal feeders like the one you chose are pretty…BUT the metal where the hummingbird sits can get extremely cold in inclement weather. Hummingbirds have literally had their little feet frozen to the area where they would sit, and some have had their beaks frozen to metal flowers. This means death. I have ONE metal feeder that I only put out when the weather is warm. All of my other 14 feeders are made of bird safe plastic with glass storage for the nectar. I keep my feeders impeccably clean, and refresh the nectar frequently. ALSO…PLEASE re-think purchasing and using the pre-made nectar solutions. I know they make things easier, but they really aren’t good for the birds! You can make your own! Use CANE sugar (NEVER beet sugar) like C&H at a ratio of 1 part sugar to 4 parts of water. STIR and BOIL on the stove for at least 15 minutes. Allow to cool overnight or when it’s completely cool to the touch. It is SO MUCH better than anything you could buy. And never add any type of coloring to the nectar. It’s not needed and could harm the birds. 🌺

Simpler to use filtered water and only boil 4 minutes. If you use distilled water you might not even need to boil, just change it out often when it is hot, and wash the feeder each time. and yes I cup sugar to 4 cups water. I've given up on the pretty/fancy feeders for the simple plastic one at WalMart that comes apart and you can keep it clean, that is very important and very few fancy ones can be cleaned completely. It's called "First Nature" I love my hummers! Don't use hash cleaners either just dish soap and good rinsing.

Last year I had a major problem with weeds. So our daughter came over and put cardboard around the veggies and marigolds. The only weeds we had were between the cardboard and the wall of my flower and veggies plants. So I've been saving more for this year. It's amazing how much that cardboard helps. It also helps to hold the water when it rains. Never had any mold. I'm in SE Michigan, so my climate is very different than yours. Good luck with the garden, it looks like it's in a sunny spot! 🌞

@@DbleP111agree!! Sugar and starch are not good for arthritis. Not to mention the extra weight it adds on us and on our bones. I have had a spinal and cervical fusion that has left me unable to function properly. Over the past few years my hips and knees have become very painful. I had to have a full body scan and my Dr told me that I have arthritis in every joint even in my feet. Unfortunately I got extremely lazy and depressed the weight I have gained over this past year has set my body in full motion for terrible pain. I’m currently working on getting rid of the sugar and starch and trying to motivate myself more. Weight, sugar and carbs are a breeding ground for arthritic pain… 🥺.. Good luck to all of us on this journey. 💕

It’s such a blessing that Tim loves gardening too. My husband always preps our raised beds and he is in charge of planting potatoes and carrots ( he plants them meticulously). I get to do tomatoes inside a hothouse and other crops such as zucchini and other squashes, peas and green beans, garden towers on deck with salad fixings, deck rail boxes with radishes and tiny carrots and peas…things that are fun to pick by grandkids. I also turned my flower pots into strawberry pots. They are attached to our deck posts. This keeps them away from our chickens and goats.

On raised beds I’ve noticed people fill the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 with biodegradable materials such as small logs, branches, cardboard, any materials that you can put in a composting pile. Then they use wood chips and mulch and then the soil. That is how my hubby does his. It saves on the amount of soil you have to bring in and it makes rich soil as that composts. Also if there are not any earth worms in your soil, you may want to buy some. They make great soil! I’m sure your boys can dig some up around the farm if they haven’t dug them all up for fishing already. I hope y’all’s garden produces an abundance of vegetables. I hope you can also have enough to can so you have homegrown through the winter. We do a lot of tomatoes for canned diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, pasta sauce, tomato juice to use in recipes or even drink and salsa. I make relish and pickles. God bless all of you!

I love Gardening!!!! there are so many options to Gardening .I have raised beds and do some in ground . Raised beds I have found way more manageable when it comes to weed control. My suggestion I would give to yall is come fall I would put a black tarp down over the ground you just tilled this will help kill all of the weed seeds in the soil. Also you could plant a cover crop. Just never leave your soil bare even in your raised beds . Always use some type of mulch to keep the soil moist . You can use leaves wood chips or straw

After having tons of dirt removed from under my house to get the house leveled, my garden and grass were destroyed. I'm just getting everything back together. Sod is coming this week. Just a suggestion, use the cardboard boxes at the bottom of the bed. The cardboard will biodegrade and keep the weeds down as it does. Or lay the cardboard between the beds and cover with wood chips. Same concept. Tim looked like he was sitting in a boat. So cute.

Third time to watch your new video. I am so tired after work, and I have fallen asleep and missed it. 🙁 I work twelve and a half hours a day plus travel time. I am definitely looking forward to retirement. January 2025. I want to work more around my property and do what I had at my previous home on a larger scale. Sixty-two dwarf and semi-dwarf organic fruit trees with the exception of the figs. They are big trees. I made sure that I had early, mid-season, and late producing of the same fruit tree. Different varieties. That way, it stretched the growing season, and it was easier to put it up when the fruit came. We ate a lot of fresh fruit, shared, and still were blessed with an over abundance. We had a ten thousand square foot organic in ground garden plus four or five large garden boxes. We also had herbs, berries, and grapes. I also composted. I was so grateful for all of our delicious food. Once established, it was easy. Ten months out of the year, we ate from our yard. We still had a lot of our acre left for our daughters to play on. Boys can eat a lot. I have three young grandsons who love to snack throughout the day. Boys sure are busy. You and Tim have three young men who will definitely benefit from all the yummy treats from your yard. Best wishes on your endeavor. Happy growing!

I’d place your beds outside of your rich tilled soil. You won’t need that soil for the raised beds and it could give you more space for direct sowing. What a lovely piece of land ❤ I’ve grown the three sisters , corn ,beans, and squash. They are complimentary to each others growth, shade, nitrogen fixing, and ground cover for scorching summer sun. And I live on a city plot in Chicago . Happy planting.

You two are such hard workers....and it shows! Things are really looking great! Just a little tip...when filling hummer feeders I only fill mine maybe about 1/3 full, especially when there are only a few hummers around. That way you won't be wasting so much since it has to be changed quite frequently. And make your own. Boil 4 parts water to one part sugar. Super easy🙂

Good morning Valerie , I just watched your recent video on the above ground gardening. I have done this for several years now, and I started out like Ya'll did. It cost so much money that my husband said that we've got to figure out a less expensive way or just get store bought😢. So this is what we did and saw a bunch of others doing it, too. In the bottom of your container, add sticks /twigs / mulch/ leaves /even that cardboard that the container was in anything organic ,about a 1/4 or 1/2 way to the top. Then add the dirt. Helps with drainage and add that Styrofoam crumbled up to the top soil so it can be aerated. I don't know if you'd already finished, but if you have, maybe next time you plant in container, it could be helpful. Also, add lots of Flowers around for gardening pollination. Friends in the Virginia Mountains.

In Canada, we love growing potatoes. They take very little care and gives you so much and are so easy to store in the winter. You use the lef over potatoes for the next year seed. If you lay cardboard like a floor in the bottomof your rasedbeds, the card board will stop the wild weedfrom growing up into your bed. The cardboard will break down in time and becomes dirt .

I always had a pretty big garden when I was raising my kids and our favorite vegetables were potatoes, they’ll grow easily in hay boxes, just wooden boxes with chicken wire sides. You just add hay on top of the growing leafy stems, leaving a little bit exposed for sunlight. Cucumber we grew on homemade teepee type trellises that were wound with string, you should have about 10 inches between each line of string. Trust me you’ll be an amazing gardener after a few seasons. Best of luck with your very first harvest. ❤

I'll be making my first garden as well this year. My son has a lot of land and we'll be doing it together. At 63 and a cancer patient I'll need a little help from him. Not much though. It will give me such joy to work in the garden. I even ordered garden boots. They are so cute. Yellow with chickens on them !!😂 I'm in Maine and have a few more weeks before I can plant so I'll be watching you and getting tips. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

If you take a 5 gal. pail as your buddy in the garden, you have a seat to sit on, and if you are on your knees you can use it to help you get up.

I love gardening and preserving the harvest. We have raised beds and in ground gardening. I like to use the square foot method which gives me more food in a small amount of space. ❤lifeatthenutthouse

You could use pieces of tree stumps, branches etc for the base of the garden bed. Then add mulch and soil. Saves $$$

My husband tilled up the ground today. He’s built 2 raised beds as well. They are really nice. Thank the Lord for the hard working gardening people. I’ll help but I just can’t do a whole lot unfortunately.

That was a ton of work. I hope you had a fantastic harvest this year. What fun. We went with green stalk planters this year instead of raised beds. I looked at those planters and put them on my Christmas list. We have to remodel our front porch and build a back porch on our mobile plus have to paint the exterior. So I’ll live vicariously through you and watch to see how things go.

Maybe add some gravel for drainage to your beds. Cardboard, leaves, tree branches, saw dust etc

That's the best thing about cats- they still have some wild in them! I don't know much about gardening, but I do know that blackberries and raspberries are brambles, and you should plant them up against a fence. That wooden one at the end of your tilled garden should work.

If Ya’ll use a layer of dead wood like logs 🪵 and branches then the mulch and topsoil…you will use way less topsoil and fill the beds faster ..we do that every year…

Hummingbirds love Fuchsia plants, also last year I planted zinnias from seed and they enjoyed them I never knew that so this year I'm planting more and there was a golden finch that was teaching it's baby how to pick the seed off of them really enjoyed watching them.

Buy a 20 pound bag of sugar in store it and you can make your own nectar sugar water for the hummingbirds Also look for some DIY you can get a hanging basket and get you a pretty colored bowl and put some water in it and you can hang it from the tree or somewheres for the bird to come and take a drink believe me I got Bluejay coming every morning to get a drink And they’ll let you know they come and they make all that sound calling each other. I love the blue birds Blue Jays.

Not sure you have all the beds built, but that cardboard could be used on the bottom of the beds before the mulch. Eventually it will breakup. The mulch is great for the garden. Get some peat moss to enhance your dirt. The plants will grow faster because the dirt won’t become hard. And of course you may have the beds done. I love gardening. Good luck.

Perfect perfect you’re doing the right thing on that mulch and you can also get the utility guys to drop off there because they get charged to put mulch and believe me mulch. It doesn’t go to waste you’re gonna need it all around. they call it chip drop… so when you see them guys cutting the trees by the polls by the in the highway near your house, tell them that they can drop those wood chips at your house for free believe me, they won’t go to waste
