We are SO EXCITED about this MASSIVE project! This has been 8 years in the making, with the last few years in the works, and we are finally starting the build for our dream pole barn workshop! It is wild that we are building this shop on our own 5 acres from the ground up. As you can imagine, this project will take some time, so enjoy this very exciting series!
Thank you Dabbson for sponsoring this video!

When combined with the DBS2000B expansion battery, this will boost your capacity to a much larger 3,072Wh. In the end, this ends up being WAY cheaper than most 3kw options on the market.

I will address any questions about this kit in next weeks video, so ask away:) The short version is this kit comes from Backwoods Building out of Chipley, FL. It is a 30x48x12 Pole barn Ag roof kit with a few upgrades like 26ga steel. The kit costs about $5000 and includes everything you need minus concrete. They can engineer these buildings to the highest FL wind ratings and the wind rating/if you need it engineered can change the price. In our case we spent about $1000 on concrete for a 150mph wind rating and weren't required to do any other modifications. Freight is another charge and depends on how far you are. The entire crew over at Backwoods have been incredible to work with and were super patient answering my 8000 questions. I asked them if they'd be willing to offer a coupon to our viewers and they graciously are giving anyone $250 off this kit if you mention Woodbrew. Give them a call and they can usually quote you quickly. bit.ly/backwoods-buildings

I'd like to take a stab at explaining the wood rot/drainage question. (At risk of a repeat). Even though the gravel is 4 ft down, it must be at the bottom in order to drain the water away from the post. If it was not there, it would not take much water to fill the gap between the post and the concrete. Treated lumber can be quite wet as purchased. As it dries it will shrink away from the concrete and create a slight gap. As I said, it won't take much water to fill that gap if it can't drain out the bottom. As oxygen, water, and wood all meet at ground level, that's where rot will begin, not at the bottom. I hope this helps.

From what I understand about the post/rot question. Most of the rot happens around the ground level where the post is exposed to standing water/oxygen. You go down deep with the hole to help with structural support, water drainage, and the freezing. As water down there freezes and thaws, it will push the concrete and post up, eventually taking things out of square/plumb. So you have to go below the frost line to fully anchor things.
@Woodbrew
@Woodbrew 5 ай бұрын
We don't have a frost line, the ground never freezes here so that isn't an issue. The rot happens where moisture and oxygen hang out, so keep that combination away from the post and you will prolong the life. That shouldn't be an issue for us once this building is closed in and properly graded.
@MattKleinschmidt
@MattKleinschmidt 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, building code is obviously different depending where you live. Frost line for me is 36 inches. But in the South its probably just a couple inches if anything. IIRC, it's only zero in like southern Florida. Regardless, the other things still probably apply, structural support and drainage. In addition to pitching concrete on an angle away from the post, they make rot prevention sleeves that can slide over the post and help with the moisture. They also make a treatment sealant you can use, hell, I've even seen people put Flex Seal on that part of the post to help prevent rot.

Next time you use your concrete mixer, either:- - Bring the pallet ALL the way to the top of the mixer so you can flip a bag off the pallet straight into the top of the mixer. Or - Rase the pallet up by about 0.5-1ft and have a board you can slide the bag of concrete straight from the pallet into the mixer. Maybe put some of that metal sheet you used to cover the wood piles on top of the board so it's nice and slippery for the bag to slide down. I've got chronic back problems and have learnt that if something is heavy it's always best to find a way to move it without having to lift it. Work smarter not harder 😊

The problem with posts is that typical rotting happens within 6 inches or so from the soil level. Some use a rubberized wrap that is basically melted around the post a couple of inches above and a foot or so below. I am building a 20x24 picnic pavilion and I am avoiding the rotting issue by using sonotubes and pouring concrete in them. Then I will use post bases by Simpson to mount the 6x6 treated posts and then end up slightly above the concrete and not affected by the concrete - which is an issue too. Good luck and blessings!

We were unable to use the brackets because of the extreme uplift engineering requirements for our area. None of the available brackets or Permacolumn type products met the strength requirements without substantial rebar structures and massive footings. No one builds them like that where we live. Most of the country has 60-80mph requirements and posts sat much closer together for snow load. We are 12ft post spacing with a minimum wind rating of 150mph. Trust me, we had a structural engineer try to modify the plans to use this method and it was extremely impractical. These posts we are using are not the stuff you find at a home center. They have 50 year warranties and I can tell you from experience, these types of buildings aren't the ones on the ground after hurricanes which pose significant more of a threat to us than having rot 50-80 years from now in these posts.

Wood soaks up moisture from the ends. So keeping the post from sitting in and absorbing water that will rise up in the wood to where you can get rot, is good. Thus rocks to allow the water to drain away.

Regarding setting any kinds of posts, a VERY helpful too is a PostRite tool. Attaches to a post with an elastic strap and has levels in every direction. No more going back and forth between sides with a long level. No having to hold the tool on the post. There are many different manufacturers of such a tool and they are very cheap, less than $10 up to $40 depending on features and quality.
@Woodbrew
@Woodbrew 6 ай бұрын
These are cool, but not very accurate since they are so short. Any variation in the post over that short distance can cause a 16ft post to be way off.

The cellulose in the wood absorbs the moisture at 4 feet under, and you really don’t need oxygen since some of the interior parts of the cellulose get washed away. Think it more as a wet rot than a dry rot. The part I’m not sure about is whether the oxygen can come for a breakdown of the moisture with the inherent electricity in the Earth is the charge moves from one resistance level to the other resistance level.
@chuckdavis7681
@chuckdavis7681 6 ай бұрын
The end grain of the posts will wick water up and could get to the oxygen level. Also, as soil dries out, or the wood dries out and shrinks, you may get air down to the bottom. It's a cheap insurance policy.

Think twice before you cut down the height of the building. This about hanging things like shop heaters, and air cleaners. Add to that you could create space with a mezzanine and add to you storage. I have a shop only 2 feet shorter than yours, and I am putting in a mezz because I keep running into storage issues. Think like this it is better to have the space and not need it, then to want it and not have it.

There is oxygen in water H2O. 1-part Hydrogen, 2-part oxygen. By the way my compliments on your drive and education. Always pursue your dreams - mistakes and all...

Work smarter, not harder, why not just drive the tractor right up to the mixer and slide the bags off onto the mixer? Hindsight being 20/20. Also don't cut the building down, consider the loft / storage space you'd be losing, also heat rises and with a good ridge vent, you could keep the shop cooler in the summer.

We did drive the tractor right up to it. Our tractor can only lift about 10 bags at a time and a pallet is 42, so there was lots of moving bags onto pallets and not so much into the mixer. The building will still be around the original 12ft height:)

@@Woodbrew Dylan, I meant drive it RIGHT up to it, so you could have just slide the bag off the pallet and into the mixer, was referring to when the bag split, sorry sometimes I don't explain very well. Just passing along what I learned when setting miles and miles of privacy fencing around subdivisions.

They couldn't have really drove the tractor closer than they did without having the concrete over waist height which is hard on your back for sure

@@cameronbarber3768 What I'm trying to say is that if they would have rested the pallet ontop or just above the mixing machine, then no lifting would have been involved, just slide the bag off the pallet and onto the mixing machine, those NO lifting involved.

@@MrKnotWright no matter what you're still going to have to move bags around. Sounds good in theory but wouldnt ever work out that way
