Good job guys, yup that’s a long tiller most 36’s have a wheel, but tillers are the true form of sailing, I specifically searched for a tiller boat on my sailboat search, mine lifts straight up when not in use so you can have lunch in the cockpit, a wheel is just always there and you have to step around it sailing or not.
@OffshoreEsprit10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I actually love the direct response from tiller to rudder. This tiller could probably be shortened a bit, so that crew can get around the cockpit a bit easier. Maybe make it foldable, or shorten it and add an extension.
@SeaGillian10 ай бұрын
Ah yes, yee sailors are partial to the tiller. I'm pretty sure I'll embrace your and Matt's POV once Matt makes it the dream tiller. But when we head down to the wild world of Minney's Yacht Surplus, Matt knows I can be found amongst the old wood wheels with my hand gently gripping an aged handle looking off into the distance, daydreaming of wheel-life.

Matt & Gillian, I love your candor and honesty in what you've done and what you're learning. Your sailing life is 6-8 months ahead of mine. My wife, Amy, and I bought a 1973 C&C 30 last August and have a launch date of May 17th. Our boat is currently on a cradle at the Madeline Island Yacht Club and we will test our online sailing skills on Lake Superior. Just as several others have commented, you are a great story teller and I really enjoy the narration along with the addition of video clips.

Thanks for posting your problems and how you solved them. Mistakes are where we learn. I was thinking you just forgot to open your seacock. I have been trying to learn sailing on KZbin because I bought a 30ft sailboat with the intention of living aboard it and sailing south for the winter. It's nice to see someone that went through what I'm headed towards. I will have to motor thru the busy port of Norfolk VA on my way to the Intercoastal Waterway to get my boat from Hampton VA to Manteo NC sometime this spring. Anyone want to help me crew?

Somebody give Jay a hand! You definitely don't want to do that alone!

Few things to keep in mind - Possible impeller pieces (other stuff) maybe inside the intake & exchanger restricting flow. Annual backflush & acid wash is good preventative maint. Considering how dirty the bum "was", possible under waterline inlet pipe/hose also has growth, restricted. Impeller spinning dry for 30sec can destroy it, having the water in/out hoses higher than the impeller/housing so it's "always in water" is a good idea. Longer looped hoses maybe do the trick. Being a pressure line pumping in raw SW, try to use 2 x hose clamps on each fitting, redundancy if 1 lets go. Carry spare pully belt & impeller. A swim deck (can be foldable) with outboard mounting is handy for emergency manoeuvres. Can also store the tender on it overnight, short trips. Could make the tiller foldable (shorter) with a hinge, or get a telescopic one.
@OffshoreEsprit10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tips Lana. It never occurred to me have a looped hose from intake to pump, but that seems logical way to keep impeller from getting dry.

You are making excellent progress, use baby steps and get to know your boat but make the many upgrades as you use it. We all call the Boat shop the Boat Yard. I do like that age and style of boat.

I'm new to boats, but not engines, etc... if I replace a small part that is not completely shot, I keep it in the vehicle or in the garage, just in case. Good on you for not throwing that impeller away!! And congrats on getting her afloat again!!
@OffshoreEsprit10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I haven't thrown away any spare part. Even if I don't know what it is today, I might figure out what it is tomorrow and wish I'd kept it..

Check but a thin smear of vasoline round the inside of the pump housing will help slide in the impeller and protect it till the water gets moving through the exchanger.. which is usually where any debris from a broken up impeller end up sticking and clogging. The other is the thermostat on the engine coolant side. The heat exchanger is always a source of blockages ...if your lucky you can backwash it but be prepared have barnical buster or at least white vinigar on hand.
@OffshoreEsprit10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice Clive. I need to get some barnical buster.

@@OffshoreEsprit Tip some people have fitted a transparent filter in between the raw water pump and the heat exchanger matrix because of the problem of impellers breaking up and causing heat exchanger induced blocking and overheating. The raw water intakes also block with sea weeds ... Barnacles and more often these days the omnipresent floating plastic debris ..

For your old Perkins engine, there is a place in VA called Transatlantic Diesel who has all sorts of parts and maintenance items for these engines. They are extremely helpful. Good luck with your new boat! I have an old Hinckley Pilot that has similar lines tour your boat. Best of luck working through your restoration.

I’m really surprised that the mechanic from the previous video or the mechanic from the boat yard did not check and recommend that the impeller be replaced since the boat had been sitting for over a year. Impellers are cheap and easy compared to a rebuild of a badly overheated engine.
@OffshoreEsprit4 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was surprised that the mechanic at boatyard didn’t catch that either. Now I know!

A word of caution, your going to have some copy write issues with the movie clips unless you have written approval to use them, when you go through the monetization process they will scan your videos for this and take them down, you can find this explained in the studio.
