I remember that quote in a book called 1915 The death of innocence, and despite me not knowing much about the first world war, for some reason something so simple as that felt extremely deep.

Great uncle Sidney, a Grimsby boy serving in South Staffodshires, was killed at Passaendale. A few days later grandfather Fred, born in Lac La Biche AB serving in Canadian Machine gun Regt was maimed on that same mud puddle of a battleground. Great uncle Frederick, from Liverpool, drowned on Sept 4 1914 near Kamloops BC first casualty of the Rocky Mountain Rangers.
