That boat has become a full time job and then some, lots of elbow grease. In the end all your work will be like one giant paycheck, “Cha-Ching” especially when you go to sell her. I think its awesome your bringing her back to life.

Billy and Sierra, Been watching you since your trawler days. We've got a 1976, 34 foot CHB trawler in Friday Harbor that I've been bringing back from neglect by the previous owner. Trouble is, I'm 75 now and I get tired just watching you two restore that DeFever! Don't forget to take a date-night someplace fun, even though boat work can be a labor of love!

Welcome to the sailing version of the wonderful world of car shows, garage princesses, trailer queens and venue egos. I salute your incredible attention to detail, all the while being sure and certain that the hull and skin are safe as well as pretty. The interiors, engines and running systems are easy, compared to the exterior prep work; I'm speaking from the experience of six summers, on hands and knees, scraping, sanding, polishing and varnishing the decks and woodwork of my dad's 78' schooner (I learned to hate teak for a few decades!). Great good luck and thank you for sharing!

The insight about doing the paint/cosmetic things first is a really good one, and speaks to your maturity and sophistication. I could see some young and headstrong people bucking that idea on "principle," or out of some rebelliousness or class envy, or whatever. You two represent yourselves well and are great teachers by example.

Best glue remover ever, lighter fluid. Dissolves the glue and evaporates completely. Just wet, wait a sec and wipe off. Any residue comes off with soap and water. I use it to remove price labels from noble woods cuz, as you say, finish won’t stick.

I have considerable sympathy for you two. I went through the same thing last Winter when I sold my powerboat and as part of the deal agreed to get the boat ready to launch. That ended up involving painting/varnishing the entire exterior of the boat after replacing 7 planks on the hull. Did I forget to say the boat was an 86 year old woody? Rebuilding the galley with new counters and varnished mahogany trim, building, varnishing and installing a new table in the main salon and painting/varnishing the cabin sole in the entire boat. Oh yeah, I was working in an unheated shed in Maine. The plus side is that the boat is sold and I won't be doing any of that work again.

Be safe, fingers crossed for good painting weather and give that darn doggie some super hugs.

3-M adhesive remover! Can be purchased at Home depot or Ace Hardware or a local Marine store. And to comment on the Painting of the boat. YES AND YES! Cosmetics for a boat like yours would be a worthy investment and add value to the vessel. Are you going to use a single or two part paint? Hope you plan on primer first! Next question? Are you going to spray or Roll n Tip? In my opinion you are taking the best avenue by addressing all the boatyard concerns while you are on the hard. Don't forget Cutlass bearings, and make sure your props are aligned as well! I am pleased to know you pulled the trigger on purchase, you have a worthy investment there, and as experienced boat owners you have the wherewithall to do this! And surely there are resources in your area to do your task handily. I am going to assume all of your through hulls are bronze and easily serviced, and a good choice to adress the operation of them as well! I am Happy to see you took the plunge. After you go back in the water Surely you should take the time to experience the wonderful places you have to go Cruising . Perhaps you may get to enjoy some places across the border Canada has Excellent places to experience also. Congratulations, Keep Safe, enjoy the boatyard and all that you do on your Journey. And....... whatever you do to the boat should bring you a Good Return on your investment! Regards

You may are good decision on waiting for the right temperature. One year we were so excited to get back in the water we started getting everything ready like we normally do. I decided to get the bottom paint on that way you would have a week or two to cure before going back into the water. The day I get it that night was in the thirties and the afternoon highs were only in the 40s. I was actually wearing a coat and hat doing it. When I was done I looked back and it did not look right. So I figured just give it a couple days to try since it was cold. It never really looked away it had in past seasons but I figure it was good enough to get through the boating season. Let's just say I was wrong. After about 2 months in the water the kids were out swimming around the boat and underneath and that's when they said that I needed to look at something. There were spots where the paint just washed away and I could see where I had sanded the hall before repainting. So I just made it to say him to finish out that year boating season and that would be a project for The following season. I never did repaint the bottom that's when we decided to move up bigger and just traded the boat in the way it was. Our new broker was telling me what went wrong. He says a lot of people make that mistake and that if I ever wanted to do it again invest in some heat lamps. And that's when my wife chimed in and said there won't be a next time that my husband is retired from painting our boat. As always I enjoyed watching you guys get things done looking forward to your next episode.

Right out of the gate I’m going to see it and I’m not going to lie or BS you. Thank you so much for taking us back to your roots. I thought you were going to get this new boat and start this adventure and forget about where you come from. Instead, you filled all those voids with everything that made you everything that you’ve become. There’s nothing in the world like watching you restart where you started from. I absolutely love it. It’s a passion. Anyone that just wants to see you on a brand new boat, they just don’t get it. They don’t understand your passion for what you do. And most importantly, they don’t understand the passion you gave all of us to watch you be amazing. I just love it. I absolutely love it. Don’t ever stop. I don’t care how rich you get off of being amazing and absolutely addicting to watch as you transition of boat from a dollar boat to a quarter of $1 million boat. I hope that you love your new boat that you have coming, but please, don’t ever stop doing this. I love it, I can’t stop watching your old videos. To see you doing it again is absolutely priceless. I have no clue why I’m so excited to watch you go back to your roots. That being said, please continue. Because I’m addicted LOL but seriously. I really enjoy watching you to refurbish things that most would throw aside as useless trash. Yep this project, it’s a great one. Not trash. Gold mine! LOL for entertainment value alone I consider this rebuild priceless. Thank you.🤙🏼🍻💯🎯 & 🤩

I've always had good luck with mineral spirits to get adhesive off, but it's probably too late for that now. As far as the other stuff goes Goof Off will work pretty good on the type of paints they use on boat but I don't recommend it for anything else, it's got too much lacquer thinner in it which removes most paints except for epoxy and urethanes. As far as the painting goes like any paint job the prep is where all of the work is, the painting is just the shiny part. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

That is an amazing transformation! I'm not sure if it was just a sunset reflection off the port-light frames or they are actually made of rose-bronze. If so it will look really nice to maintain them as such and not paint them. They can be shined and coated with a slightly abrasive polish and then coated with wax or a polymer protection to slow oxidation.
