I'm working on an illustration while listening to this, and Jarvis made a noise off screen, so I looked up at the same time Jarvis looked directly at the camera and I swear it was like one of those moments where you accidentally locked eyes with a stranger. My anxiety even spiked for a soft moment before I remembered Jarvis can't see me lol

Yes!! This 100% ❤I had such a hard time after the Gus breakdown. I had loved their podcast- even used the intro to walk into my wedding reception! I think we’ve found a good “replacement” for it though. It’s nice to just have guys being chill, having a good conversation with each other + guests without it getting toxic.

Man, hearing you guys talk about the jokes that you made in high school makes me feel so much better - I was raised in a very sheltered white village in England, so growing up I said and did so many things I am so extremely ashamed about - and I didn't learn I was wrong to say or do those things until I went to university (and I went to university at 21, so I'd spent most of my life in a bubble where those things were funny instead of problematic). Because of that, I'm still learning the right way to address race/gender/etc topics and what kinds of jokes(etc) I can, can't, or shouldn't say. It's just really nice to hear from two people I really respect that the past doesn't have to be totally shameful, so long as you've learned and grown and become a better person. Or rather, I can be ashamed, but also proud of the steps I'm making toward that growth, and those feelings can coexist.

I love the Lord of the Rings books, and I 100% agree with Jordan’s criticism of them. Tolkien is a product of his time, and if you go deep the Euro-Centrism is pretty obvious, which is why I prefer the adaptations moving away from the real world comparisons. Middle-Earth is supposed to be Europe, and the people who follow Sauron just happen to come from the East and South of there. 😬

There may be some implied exclusion or racism but it’s not explicit in fact I like the inclusion in the rings of power I would be annoyed if inclusion changed the canon though since Peter Jackson cast all white people. If they made an established character a different race in the same continuity I’d be confused. Honestly the diversity in the rings of power makes it more believable. The main issue with the books I think is that Tolkien was English and it’s largely based on world war 1 and 2 experiences there is a definite othering of the bad characters but it’s mostly about the terror of war the characters don’t want to be fighting and there is a moment in the Peter Jackson films where a southerner is killed and Faramir says this man had a family and he feels sad that they won’t know what happened to him. In terms of colour symbolism “white” isn’t always symbolic of good , Saruman started off as “ white “ but then turned evil. Sorry for the rant I’m just mad about the state of the current fandom. I’m all for inclusion and I’m not saying Tolkien was perfect and didn’t write his bias into the books. I just want to enjoy the new series and I think there is definitely room for the inclusion it may or may not be in the books but that’s irrelevant the books are a product of the time they were made and the author but they aren’t explicitly racist inherently. I hope we can all enjoy an updated version of lord of the rings and feel represented.

@@benchotka5768 Well said. The vitriol directed towards Rings of Power has been upsetting, especially since it is a result of the alt-right latching on to it as a talking point. Nonetheless, I’ve enjoyed the series a lot so far.

That conversation at the end was very powerful to me. I’m currently trying to break up with my long term partner because I’ve realized how I’ve been sacrificing my mental health to try and be his only support person. Its very hard to explain to them because it’s not a specific bad thing that causes the downfall of the relationship but it’s also not something that can be easily fixed, especially when it’s someone who doesn’t believe in therapy, like my partner.

I’m done with the recent lotr fandom and you’re right the actual books aren’t specific enough to be considered racist they do however seem to lack inclusion. Nowhere in the book does it say dwarves can’t be black and elves can’t be Hispanic. All the races are made up and they do have quite a bit of diversity. I think most of the issues are actually a result of Peter Jackson’s lack of inclusion in his casting. Not saying Tolkien wasn’t bigoted or racist but the actual books don’t show much of it if he was. There aren’t enough female characters and no one is specifically a poc but I’m really enjoying the inclusion in the new series. In fact it really works the current racist fandom needs to wake up.

Regarding the person being shut out by their best friend, I did the same thing when I was a teenager. I had some major issues with them but it was difficult for me to express myself at that age. I did try once though. Nothing changed. I was also going through mental health issues at the time and was isolating myself as an effect of that. I assumed that once I decided to stop being friends with them (while not telling them the reason why) that our entire friend group would hate me so I stopped talking to them too. Not sure if this is the case with their friend but it might offer a little insight to what /may/ be going on.

I appreciate your words about friend stuff at the end. I've been on the both sides but at times i say something that puts too much pressure. I've moved away from groups where i feel weird. And I've had friends with common friends leave too. Something I've learned is that most ppl don't value friendships as much as i do, or what they're looking for is different than you. Bc i love a good group hang but prioritize individual relationships within it, while I've seen that some prioritize keeping the harmony within the whole group without getting too deep into what ppl are going thru etc. There's nothing wrong with either view and both can be interpreted as valuing friendships but different aspects of it.

It wasn't until "The Panini, girls!" (as Luxaria would say) that I found a lot of the people I watch now, and actually learned HOW to KZbin; I never really cared before. To some extent, knowing THE KZbin SPHERE was for the chronically online, was kind of a negative thing, so I just shrugged and didn't pay attention. Either the KZbin gravitational pull finally got me during lock down, or content like this channel and Anne Reardon and others that explain content farms and how the algorithm works AND have a good voice to offer taught me how to properly Tube. Kind of both, probably; but the latter is what has gotten a lot more engagement from me, and the creators that I want to see still succeed are the only reason I've stuck around through KZbin's various malfeasances, because it's just not realistic to expect many creators on here to maintain and sustain by just jumping platforms- that would be a big hit, and to where will they go? Maybe KZbin thinks they are too big to fail (and has made deliberate moves to reenforce that), so they don't feel enough incentive to actually fix all these platform issues that just dump on creators. That's unsurprisingly a short-sighted and ill-advised move on their part; they would do well to support the creators that make their platform, before they either find diminishing returns on their loyalty to KZbin and flee, losses be damned; or a Ryan Reynolds-type tries to Mint-Moble this arena and lure content creators away. KZbin should consider that the 'where else are you gonna go, lol' model is also not sustainable forever.

one of my favourite things that some americans will do when trying to do a british accent is dropping some of their ds in the same way they would ts, because frequently those are pronounced the same in american english for example, ladder vs latter these are indistinguishable in many american accents, and while some brits may drop the ts in latter, i cant think of any that would drop the ds in ladder but some americans will pronounce both as la'er while doing a british accent, because well, they're pronounced the same, right?

Matt Walsh is kind of boring, I still think Tim Pool kind of surprises me every time I see him speak because I expect like a Hockey Bro voice to come out of his mouth(or maybe sound close to Crowder's voice), but instead it's Shapiro lite. Ben Shapiro though, I don't know... I just can't stand his voice, maybe it's because I feel like it's just another fake part of his persona, but the guy is literally the caricature of a "smart guy" stereotype. He just needs to wear glasses. Ben Shapiro is just literally Mandark. At the end of the day though, it feels like a waste of my life in that I know who all these people are, lol

I feel like I am having the process of how long it takes me to listen to a long podcast exposed but I feel like exposing a big black secret in that I feel like at some point every Black person double thinks if they should use the N-word or not... I think in general, but sometimes with black people too. I mean, it's not a word that I grew up around, so in general I will not use it. I mean, granted the I did hear the word among my peers (mostly the "a" form), but it wasn't a word I heard from adults so I generally didn't use it. Of course today I might intentionally think of a terrible joke, or a racist black joke, or an n-word joke and I will say it among some of my close black friends or black friends I am really comfortable with, I guess in a sarcastic, more of an "egg on my face, egg on our face" sort of way and I'll say that then, but even then, I'm often thinking of censoring myself, saying something like "n-word" instead, and I feel like that is kind of funny. Black people shouldn't be worried about saying the N-word to other Black People (I mean, that is what society says, it's our privilege), especially when not used as an insult, but I think it's pretty typical to everybody at least some point in their life.

To Jarvis' macroscopically optimistic, microscopically pessimistic comment; I identified with this, up until I started law school. It's bad out here, folks.

I will suggest watching the video on the Tolkien stuff by James Somerton. Called "The Wokening of Middle Earth" or something like that. It acknowledges both a lot of the "based" stuff in Tolkien's lore (including some stuff just straight up in the main texts people regularly read) as well as some of the stuff that's fucked up (no holds barred). I honestly learned a lot, and was surprised by how progressive Tolkien was, especially for the time. Again, not that he didn't hold some iffy views or express some pretty obviously euro-centric views. But would highly rec that vid. Edit: It's called "Diversity in The Rings of Power". Someone else linked it below!

I’ll definitely watch that of course there is some objectionable content in the books but there often is in older works I’m interested to learn about it. I was listening to a Jules Vern novel recently and there was a description of a pipe shaped like a woman becoming darker with use and I nearly spit out my drink when I heard it ! There’s nothing that explicit that I’ve seen in lord of the rings.
