Thanks for all the news Johanna. So good to see an update with my little darlin' & have an idea of your plans going forward for awhile. Seeing Annika's joy at reuniting with her grandparents was special, as was her time with a friend, painting at the table. Wishing you all the best with your continued schooling for your degree. Looking forward to some video of your months in Finland & with your mother & sister. That's going to be a considerable life event I'm sure. Love to you all. 💋❤

The moment Annika met her grandparents was priceless ❤ I can relate to your views on the account of a chaotic metropolitan city like Mumbai, in contrast with the laid-back life in Kerala. One thing is staying in a big city in, a comfy hotel for a period of time and totally a different thing to have to settle in an overly populated city. I'm glad you two are going to spend some time in your homeland, although Vinod will terribly miss you two. Have a lovely time in Helsinki.
@JohannaNorth
@JohannaNorth 2 ай бұрын
We miss Vinod terribly too, but it's just temporary and a necessary step to take now for the better of our family :) You are absolutely right about how different a place is depending on if you're on a holiday staying in a fancy hotel or living your daily life somewhere. I don't hate Mumbai, I still think that it is a lovely city for the most part. But the locality where we are currently having the house in has some issues that are difficult for our whole family to adjust to, especially after Kerala. But maybe we'll eventually adjust or we'll have to rethink our living situation inside Mumbai, because we're definitely not leaving Mumbai completely in the next few years, except for this one longer stay in Finland :)

I kind of relate to this feeling Johanna. My daughter and Annika are the same age and we both had to leave our husband at Vizag where he is still posted and come to Mumbai as I had to pursue my career. There's a long way that we have come in India to grant women this freedom and also have husbands and in laws who are equally supportive. It is going to be a year now and we have met my husband just once in this duration. But we are hopeful to reunite soon All the best for the new and exciting journey that you and Annika are going to embark. My heart goes out to both you and Vinod also, may God give you strength to bear this temporary separation as living away from family is not easy ❤

Thank you for sharing your own situation with me. Sending you lots of warm thoughts and my best wishes for a quick reunion! I'll keep you in my prayers. This line of work where (mostly) men get postings and regularly shifted to different locations are so difficult for families and women as we usually have to sacrifice a lot and especially our own careers for our husbands'. I'm happy to hear you also have the support of your family. Never take it for granted, you are so blessed! It is difficult, but it must be serving your family, otherwise you wouldn't even be doing it. I'm sure you'll have a happier family and future for it

Vinod is indeed a great partner in life, and as supportive of me as I have been of him and his job for the past 8,5 years by leaving my job, country, family and staying at home due to various circumstances outside our control! But it has always been extremely important to him that I will eventually be able to get my own degree and a good job outside homemaking, and more so now that we have a daughter of our own, so that she will see her parents set an example of equal partnership, home and independence. And yes, it doesnt hurt at all that he’s so handsome too 😉🤣

Except for a few "posh" neighborhoods in South Mumbai, maybe an enclave or two like Powai, etc. most of Mumbai is an awful place to live especially for families with young kids, relatively speaking. Greenery is virtually non-existent, crowds, noise pollution and general lack of cleanliness and civic-mindedness is all-pervasive. Frankly most Indian metros have the same issues, some like Delhi are even worse due to air pollution.

Wowwww. First of all I cannot believe the reactions to this announcement(the negative ones). I hope it only strengthens your resolve. How can people be so presumptuous??? I need to vent some more but I’d rather congratulate you and Vinod. Marriage and any relationship should be about growth, support and equality. You do what helps you grow individually and together. Congratulations on this new (interim) chapter sending you wishes for lots of growth and fulfilment for all of you❤️🤗🤗😄

I always try to remind myself that I know how things really are in our life, I know what kind of a person I am, I know our family and marriage, and so does Vinod. And as long as we support each other and our family together that’s the only thing that really matters. And of course I remember all those good people and their usernames who throughout these years have always shown us their support and love also, even through more unconventional choices and events like now! ❤️❤️❤️ But it’s a sad reality that many people also forget manners and respect under the cover of online anonymity and feel that they’re actually entitled to say whatever they want since here is a person sharing glimpses into their life online. They wouldn’t say anything to my face IRL because they’d know that it’s not their place. How easy it is to forget online that you’re sending your comments to an actual human being who reads them.
@Soroaa_
@Soroaa_ 2 ай бұрын
@JohannaNorth Yes I also got triggered by the negative comments here. It feels very familiar because 1,5 years ago my husband had to move abroad for work and I would stay in my country raising our daughter alone. The reactions of people were the same if not worst. It was a very difficult time at the beginning, I even started doubting my husband. But luckily with the support of his Indian family who showed me they truly care, love us no matter the distance, and the decision my husband had to make was for the bettering of our future, we made it. Living in the west, people here would not even believe a couple can live long distance and still be faithful and still deeply love each others. The decision you and Vinod are making today will bring the good fruits in your future. I also want to say even if Annika will miss her papa, due to technology today she will be able to see him every days. We would have videocalls as often as possible, our daughter knew papa didn't disappear but he was just busy working and will come back soon. The thing is also in the time of our grandmothers, it was very common that husband would work abroad and come only once or twice a year. It has always existed in the society that sometimes, couples, for various reasons or circumstances, would have to go through a short/mild period of physical separation. But that doesn't mean everything is thrown in the dustbin. In fact more often than not it will really strengthen the bond between wife and husband. Anyway... I wish you all the best

Thank you so much for your support and kind words! Means a lot :) We'll be back in India by next Jan! I think you quite nailed it that there's a good bit of misogyny also at play here. Vinod's job is also the type which could really take him away from us at any point even for a year! When we were finding out about his transfer to Mumbai it could've well been that Annika and I couldn't have joined him there for a year or two. And I'm pretty sure there would've been no backlash for that, just praise for a heroic father sacrificing and providing for his family.

Every hardship comes with something beneficial . I am happy that you and Annika are going to enjoy a chance to spend a relatively long period with your kind mon and sister while living, studying and hopefully working in Finland. I know it is hard to be apart of your husband but I am confident all the three of you will come much stronger out of the current hardships. Be happy to spend some valuable time with your Finnish family as well and to have them enjoy you wonderful girl. And lastly, not everybody can fit or find his/her place in a vast metro city. I cannot and so many people that I happen to know. Please do receive my honest wishes and prays for happiness and self-actualisation together with my deep thanks for the wonderful videos.
@JohannaNorth
@JohannaNorth 2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for the kind wishes! It is indeed really nice that Annika gets to bond more with my family and country too, even if we are without Vinod for a little while. But I need to apply to study and a few months apart are the price we have to pay at this point for a better future for our family. The timing of us having this longer visit to Finland so soon after our relocation to Mumbai is just a coincidence, though a welcome break to the challenging adjustment process! I don't hate Mumbai, I actually think it's a lovely city especially to visit and I know there are also localities there that'd be better suited for our lifestyle and personalities. Exactly what you said, not everyone fits in or is suited for metro living and some people absolutely thrive there! We're all different and should be allowed to have our own preferences, lifestyles, struggles. I don't think any Indian person would adjust perfectly to living in Finland in just 4 months either...

I think u will LOVE IT lots but miss Vinod so I guess it's bitter sweet. I personally couldnt live in Mumbai. So Finland is a great break away from it. And hopefully Mumbai is a temporary move esp since it's congested with a lack of outdoor spaces hunni. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Thank you so much Kas 🙏 Vinod will be here roughly two of the six months we’re here, so we’ll also get to enjoy Finland together plenty enough. We’re of course missing Vinod a lot, but we couldn’t really postpone my applying to school any longer. We’ve been actually planning this for many years and have had to delay it due to various reasons like covid, having a child, visa issues.. so in reality, while it’s a nice break from the adjustment to big city life in Mumbai, the timing is just a coincidence and we’re not in Finland to escape Mumbai, just for me to apply to school 😊

@@JohannaNorth a 6 mth application into school in Finland is SUPER ❤ And the timing is a perfect coincidence. Re Vinod is currently posted in Mumbai and it's not the ideal place for green space and peace, so the 6 month trip to Finland couldn't have come at a better time for you. I know there are pitfalls too, re missing Vinod, but I'm so glad he can be in Finland with u for some of it ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Hi Johanna, What happened that you are suddenly leaving India? Mumbai is expensive? Hope to see you both back soon. You can do Correspondence course in India I think. Watching from Kerala.

It might seem sudden to outsiders, but we've been planning my applying to study for a long time already, having to postpone it multiple times due to various reasons outside our control like covid, pregnancy and having a baby, visa issues... Moving to Mumbai has nothing to do with this trip, even if it is a welcome break from the challenging process of adjusting to living in a huge metro city. :) I'm not allowed to study in India and my studies cannot be delayed forever. The programme I'm applying to is online though if I'm accepted into it, so while I have to apply in Finland, I can do the actual studies in India too.

I hope this subtle announcement is not a divorce in the making , marriage is as serious as the decisions you make especially when there is a child involved , you left everything behind in Finland to close the gap of distance between you and your now husband, as parents you both have to remember that keeping your child as the highest priority , from all your videos it seems you love constant change and hoping this turns out in the best positive way , economic independence is important for a person so wish you a boosted career

Maybe you are thinking too much...even if it is divorce why are u not letting them go through it peacefully...all humans we should be kind and compassionate to each other with our words...that's the least we can do..divorce is not an easy thing..let them be.

@JohannaNorth This is the norm in Kerala, many couples live apart, either for studies, work (esp. Dubai) or to take care of parents, children. Not sure if you noticed this while there!
@JohannaNorth
@JohannaNorth 2 ай бұрын
Thank you, finally someone said it! I had definitely noticed it in Kerala, but it's super common all over India: in Vinod's work community which has people from all the states, both two of our last househelp (one bengali, one mumbaikar) lived separately from either their husband or even their children, and also in vinod's parents' (jat) community in Jaipur many men live mostly away from their families. I think many people are happy to point at a woman, and a foreigner at that, and shame them for prioritising their own education and career "at the expense of togetherness", even if it's just for a little while and something that is common in Indian culture too (for men at least).

Yes, ingrained patriarchal values have a way of rearing their ugly head in all our lives. BTW, in my family it was my Mum who lived far away (due to a job transfer and to take care of her parents, that too for 10 years).

I can’t I can’t Annikas little voice” that’s for bigs children” does her india school speak Hindi ? Can’t wait to see the Finnish adventure I think the Mumbai apartment is nice can’t hear a lot a traffic noise
@JohannaNorth
@JohannaNorth 2 ай бұрын
I think the school is supposed to be "English medium", but they definitely speak some Hindi there too. The camera mic is adjusted so it doesn't catch much of the background noise, and whatever might be caught would then get edited out. But the traffic noise isn't even that bad and you kinda get used to it, same with the constant overflying aeroplanes. The major issue is loudspeakers that are used every hour for a good while for prayer calls. I don't want to hurt anyone's religious sentiments, and I don't know how to put it any more sensitively.

Johanna, let me be frank, its good ur going to Finland, Annika will have a good and safe life there, after that horror that happened in Kolkata recently, its the right thing to do, India is not a safe place for women per se, maybe down south, maybe Mumbai for a bit but not the north , But overall the country's reputation as a safe bet for women is over, long gone, hence what ur doing is the right thing to do. I did the same thing 12 yrs back. That was a wise decision I made and I never regret it, I love India but not the way they treat and respect women. Best of Luck

Well we are still considering our options of where to settle down eventually once Vinod retires. More likely Finland at this point and we definitely want to live there at least a few years at some point so that Annika can get a strong connection to the Finnish culture too, but India isn't out of the question at all. What you mentioned is definitely a factor to consider though. In any case, no matter where we settle, I need to study now, so that in the future I will have many more doors open for me when it comes to working and providing for our family. :)
