As a logger close to where your from, we don’t get paid to clean up tree tops. 9 out of 10 times land owners are chasing the dollar. Sure we could come in and clean up after ourselves but it comes out of the land owners pocket or the money from the timber. I’m not bashing what your doing here I think your doing the right thing for your timber stand! A lot of land owners get as many bids as they can from loggers/sawmills and we have to move so fast and move a certain amount of loads a day to make any money. I think if land owners handled their timber sales differently their probably wouldn’t be such a thing as a bad logger. Just my thoughts on it! Nice video!

smart move, I do like the fact that they tried not to damage good trees. we lost tons of trees from that after we had a select cut done 8 years ago. Now we have a mill and I take the bad trees down and use them for projects here or fire wood.. Nice move..

Might look into planting some seedlings. Could be some program / forestry incentive help with desirable species. Would definitely speed up reforestation with good stuff.

Forests do a much better job of reforesting than we do. The survival rate of seedlings is typically 0% to 20% depending upon the species.

@@richardbrowne1679 The forests does a great job of regrowing trees, just might not be the kind of tree you want. Around me, a lot of the new trees would be maple or cottonwood.

That’s why you do what Adam is doing in thinning. You remove the less desirable species and leaving the older desirable species to reseed. If your managing your property for commercial timber, thinning is a continual process to remove less desirable species and trees. I’m not sure where people get the idea that replanting forested areas is commonly done. It’s very uncommon because it’s expensive and success rates low. There are a few areas of the country where replanting is done for commercial forestry operations and it’s typically done by machine making it more cost effective.

Forests replant themselves in a correct order. The “garbage” brush takes over for a bit to shelter the young “garbage” trees until they become established enough to survive on their own. Then the garbage trees shelter the “good” trees until they become well established. Only man is dumb enough to think putting an acorn in the ground will creat a hardwood forest faster than nature. Thinning is necessary for a healthy forest… there are only so many nutrients available in the soil. Adam is going about this exactly right. Trees are a crop just like corn or wheat or even flowers in your garden. Giving them room to grow is important for health.

I would recommend not logging during bird breeding season to prevent destroying nests, but otherwise it looks like they did a decent job. I’m a forester by the way.

From a forestry standpoint, I agree with much of what you did here, but in the future I would encourage you to work with a licensed forester for any logging operations. For a slight fee, they can significantly improve the dollar yield, cut quality and post-harvest appearance of a stand, not to mention the wildlife value. Keep putting out great content!

I think you have a great management plan and approach to TSI. We did a pine thinning and selective hardwood cut in the early and mid-90’s on our tree farm and the generation was exponential. I believe you’ll enjoy the benefits sooner than you think.

Make sure you contact your local service forester. Ours has been a great resource for our farm before/during/after we had our 130 acres logged. Learned a lot of things I didn't know from him.

Adam, I'm guess there's no paper mills in your region? My property is in the deep SE of the country & we cut every 12 to 20 years, depending on timber & pulp prices. I did my 1st cut about 10 years ago & did a select cut, as did most of my cousins. One cousin & my brother did clear cutting which had never been since my great grandfather homesteaded the the property. The outcome of their greed cause major erosion & flooding for the rest of us & we had to replace a water crossing 3 times in the past 10 years at a large cost, a long story. Anyway, approaching 70, I'm a 4th generation owner & don't know if I'll make another cut, but would like to, just to walk my son through the process. Good luck

good video they are really doing a nice job. you will have lots of fire wood for next year there may be a few you can get lumber out of. with the timber cutters here you are better to clear cut because they damage what they leave really bad. how much is it costing you to get all this done? i would like to have paradise and pear trees gone. take care, be safe and well.

Better to have your own log supply than have to buy in firewood logs to process. More room for profit. I'd replant 20-30 saplings ,cherry/oak/Hickory in that beech cut opening to prevent brush from overtaking it. U could transplant saplings from your own woods if some are too dense in an area. But you'll have to wire cage and stake them to keep the deer from eating them. Probably water weekly til they get established roots. Might have to spray the buckthorn sprouts in spring to kill them off for good. Alot of disturbed soil really opens the soil seed bank. Black Cherry has viable seeds for 3-4 yrs. Beech tends to stump sprout on small stumps and root sprout also. Might need to spray the stumps if u don't want beech coming back in an area. Hickory. Beech. And oak are all good nut producers tho for wildlife tho. Some people manage for wildlife others strictly for timber. Good to get those ugly trees out to make room for the more valuable crop trees to grow

Beech stumps will sprout countless stems and can become the dominant "weed" tree if not controlled. Did you do anything to kill the roots after being cut? Other species may not be able to germinate if covered with beech. Being open, you may not have as much of a problem. Beech are more competitive in a shady environment. But where beech are thinned with an existing canopy, they may prevent other species from starting a new generation.

Just make sure the brushy regrowth is natives, not invasives! You will need to pay attention to it and pull invasives if you find them. Wildlife seems to prefer white oak acorns. On our property we don’t see much white oak regeneration around the few white oak trees we have. I’m planting trees for the next generation too… at least thinning them will give me firewood around the time I retire.
