I did a job where I had to be on the roof in December in NW PA. You are so right transitions are the worst part. When I was transitioning I told the Lord if He would get me off the roof without dropping me to the ground I would never do that again. Moved to FL. Haven’t been to PA in the winter! Am now officially too old.

Old fireman here and you really need a longer ladder. A three fly ladder would work better for you. Also never set the ladder on the pitch side of the roof. Always go on the eaves side. It is more stable and less likely to slide sideways. A longer ladder allows you to rise the ladder at least 4 to 5 feet higher than the edge of the roof. That way you can climb up past the edges of the roof and just step off the ladder onto the roof. Same with going down. Easier and way safer than climbing/dragging yourself off the ladder and onto or off the roof. Good job using the the safety harness

Never listen to a fireman, they know all the safety rules and break all of them when there is a fire, if firemen really followed all the safety rules they would park their truck on a Walmart parking lot work an 8 hour day and be fully dressed. They pretty much have wrote the book so there are no fires. Now they are having cars built so they won’t wreck or hurt someone. Pretty much are working themself out of a job. Now if there is a fire, all the firemen show up just to keep their training up. My guess before long they will have a thankless job. Thank you fireman for keeping us safe and not needing you.

Cable technician contractor for 10 years. If I couldn't put my ladder on an eave or against the very top of the pitch side, I didn't climb it. Every other part of the ladder didn't matter whether flexing over a fence or 1 of the feet off the ground; if the top contact point isn't square, I'm not going up.

I agree Robert. That is the technique I've always used and it served me well. A long ladder and raise about 4 or 5 feet higher than the edge of the roof then just climb up past the edge of the roof and just step off. Safe and easy.

When your head and shoulders get to the edge of the roof tie the ladder off to the edge. Install eyes or u-bolts something to tie it securely to. As mentioned before extend your ladder 5-6 ft above the roof edge. If you do this correctly you will have another chance to go on the roof - if not...it won't matter!

The next time you put that ladder up like that ,Use your excavator , Tie your ladder off to the bucket at least 3/4 up the ladder . It would keep it from going side wise getting on and off. She or anyone else could not control it from the ground

Good point Bill, I did something similar on chimney through the metal roof on my barnshop with 12 12 pitch roof. Sliding hatch 24x24 next to the chimney made out of spare section of roofing metal. Good thing I did because 2 years later we had a ice storm that dropped a limb right on the chimney cap. Would have needed a cheery picker to get the heat back on, instead just slid the hatch pull the cap beat it back into shape. I really enjoy these videos.

I agree with Robert...you set your ladder on the pitch side ....ive been doing roof work for a long time and that made me even bite my nails watching you get on and off the ladder.....always set your ladder on the eave side....sooo much more stable. As for an inside access hatch for the roof, keep in mind every cut you make in your roof is a point of failure for water to leak through. And being in such a cold place with snow and ice building up on the roof, cold snow water will find the smallest crack and sneak in no matter how water tight you make your access. Actually for the wood burner i might have even went with a 90 bend and went out the side wall just to keep from doing a roof pentation. However you do get a better draw and less chance of soot buildup going straight out instead of a horizontal pipe. One more suggestion with your roof pipe, you might want to install a snow break to keep snow and ice from piling up behind the pipe and causing damage as it slides off the roof..... follow the link a good demo of what im talking about kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWLHe5SbeJpnmrc

As you started installing the insulation, I think I noticed some preliminary electrical wires. On that note I want to suggest a better (and safer) connector: the WAGO 221 lever-nuts! These lever-nuts allow you to add or subtract wires to a connection without having to disassemble the whole bundle (as you have to with a wire nut). You just strip about 4mm at the end of a wire (or cable), insert into an open port and flip the lever down. And you have a FIRM connection that will not wriggle loose. Plus, with proper attention, you are protected from shock and/or short-circuiting yourself. These lever-nuts are available on amazon for 2, 3 and 5 conductors, as well as assortment packs.. And you can daisy-chain them for more conductors. I have wired my sisters new house in Paraguay all with these connectors. And I have also retrofitted my own (former) house with them. It makes adding or replacing appliances and/or outlets so much easier AND safer!

The most dangerous time when working at heights is getting from the ladder to the roof and back! Personally (with 8 years of training satellite and TV techs in working at heights all around Australia) I would have set the ladder up on the side of the house rather than the gable end. This give you a flat location to stand when you step onto the roof. You need to step off the ladder and move straight away from the live edge of the roof. Your ladder should be tied off at the top and you anchor rope should over the other side of the roof to your anchor point. Make sure you protect the lanyard if you goes over the sharp edge of the roof. This is the safest way I can suggest to you to safely access your roof. Love the channel guys. You have too much fun ;-)

One thing you might want to consider before pouring your floor is integrating radiant heating. It would be much more efficient at holding temp near the floor where you will be working. There are some great outdoor boilers that are amazingly efficient can also provide hot water via a heat exchanger. If you wanted you could run a line to a radiator in the residential section as well. I know people who live in northern Minnesota where -40 isn't unusual and they heat their homes, garages, shops, and even barns with them. All from scrap wood from the property.
@db-ws9yn
@db-ws9yn 3 жыл бұрын
The big benefit to an outdoor boiler is you will spend a lot less time collecting wood and adding logs to the fire. The boilers can run for a very long time after being loaded because they are so efficient. They also have programmable thermostats that can close or open the air intake to produce fewer or more BTUs as needed and save fuel.

I generally don't mind heights - but I've done roof repair at about that height and that type of roof and, by far, the worst thing for me was getting back onto the ladder from the roof. Scared the pants off me every time. I finally installed a couple of screw eyes on either side of the ladder into the facia and tied the ladder to the building so there was no chance of it moving. Gave me much more confidence. Well done Reckless! :)

As I listen to your wood stove adventure and hear about the stress invoked by being on the roof I have something to point out .. you are going to have to return up there several times in the days the future. The chimneys need to be cleaned. Now is the time to plan access. Perhaps a roof access hatch from inside and a small cat walk system with an easy lanyard attachment point along the run? The point of interning and exiting the ladder system is VERY MUCH where stuff goes bad really fast. Time to plan and summer to install. You will thank yourself every time you use it.

Great work on the install guys! Like a few people on here have mentioned about the ladder situation, the transition between ladder and roof is certainly the most dangerous. I train heights work and if I can give you any tips it would be these. 1.) Level contact points to the ground and the building are a must. The best point to rest the ladder is on the flat edge as opposed to the angled edge as someone mentioned. Sometimes though this may not be available. Work to your situation. 2.) For the transition if you can have the ladder extended 3-4 rungs above the gutter and a rung level with or just above the gutter line then it gives you something to hold onto and you are also stepping on/off at the same level or slightly above. Having to step down onto the rung as you are transitioning to come down is definitely a scary situation for those not overly confident, but you did it, you made it work and you were safe on your fall arrest so credit to you! Not that you want to be up there often, but should it become something you need to do, maybe look to install some fixed anchor points along the roof. Gives you more flexibility and safety around the roof and avoids the issue of a pendulum swing if you happen to fall over the edge and are away from your anchor. Either way, loving your videos and can't wait to see the next instalment!! Cheers

How I clean my chimney without going on the roof: remove pipe above stove, cut hole about 8” above bottom corner of a large garbage bag. Insert chimney brush into pipe, thread brush pole through hole in garbage bag, tape bag to stove pipe. Brush chimney, adding poles as you go up being careful not to knock off the rain cover. Very little mess to clean up and you never need to go up on the roof.

Just a thought - there will come a time when the flue will have to be swept. When you put in the next one it might be an idea to take the flue straight out the wall and then straight up the outside of the wall. This will allow the flue to be swept with minimum mess inside the building. Cheers :)

Only difference is I experienced it all a long time ago. You guys are doing great, learning is living! For starting fires, I use a map gas torch for starting, they last forever, light small soft woods on bottom to start with bigger on top, never use cardboard, paper or other junk, it will clog your pipes and spark arrester and become a fire danger in the future.

One more safety note: make sure you have a plan in case you do slip and are hanging from the safety harness. You don't want to hang from the harness too long as it will start to cut off blood circulation to your legs. The mini-X would work great for this. maybe fab up a platform using a pallet that can be picked up with the mini-X. The Courtney can have it in position and ready to go in case you fall.

You guys are doing the right thing with the wood stove. I’ve used wood heat in Alaska for more than 12 years and can say that you will love it. Two things will make it even better. Set your stove up to draw its combustion air from outside. It will make everything feel much warmer and you won’t be exhausting your warm inside air. The second is to make sure your single wall pipe is oriented so the condensate from the wood smoke runs down the inside of the stove pipe. If it’s is facing the wrong way you get a yucky mess on the outside of the pipe and stove top. Good work and good luck! Love from Alaska!

For your roof work, get a couple pieces of 2" conduit 6' long. Use 4 u shaped clamps wide enough to fit over the sides of the ladder sides. Use these clamps to hook the conduit to the out side of the ladder on the upper end. Hook them on so about 3' of the conduit sticks up above the ladder. When putting the ladder up set the top rung about even with the edge of roof or just abit above the edge. The conduit will give you handholds so you can step through the conduit onto the roof. When up on the roof run the rope from your safety harness over the peak of roof and tie off to a vehicle with just enough slack to work.

Extend your ladder a couple rungs higher, tie it off if you can. Easier to step on/off when you are standing straight, not bent over & off balance. Try it at lower levels 1st, and always remember: it's not the fall that hurts, its the stop. A 3lb biscuit tin with a loose lid on top of the stove will make beautiful jacket potatoes whilst you work. A little olive oil & rub some salt on for lovely crispy skins. No more cold feet, too!

Two ropes is the way to go. Safety like you showed, connected to the harness in the back and a "working" rope in the front. Something you can grab on to or tighten and work "against". There are special harness connection attachments that allow you to shorten/length and then quickly relock. I think you mentioned it, but the simplest thing is to go over the roof with the rope and down to something solid, like the truck.

It's a project you can DIY. As for your roof, staple house wrap to 1 rafter then lay glass on wrap and pull glass to roof by staples to the next rafter. You use plastic on interior ceiling and lay in glass from the top, or install drywall first. Just closing in the room with plastic sheeting will keep most of the heat in. @@AmbitionStrikes I've experimented with many different types of exhaust stacks. Straight Up will guarantee you use the most wood as possible to heat your space. And, if you use the damper to control the raging rising exhaust to conserve wood, the exhaust air will cool too much in the stack and create debris on the inside stack. In addition, when the fire goes out... the heat in your building will rapidly rise out this massive heat sucking exhaust pipe. On the bright side, you will stay in shape carrying cords of wood up the stairs! If you had going up for 4' then out the side of the building and then up... the installation and maintenance would be way easier and safer. A side exit stack requires very little maintenance whereas your roof now has a hole you will be dealing with forever. Don't believe for a minute your work on the roof is done. It has only begun.

@@AmbitionStrikes Ahh the old catch 22... as the fire draws oxygen from room it also sucks warm air from room which then has to be replaced by cool air from outside and so on and so forth. Not the most efficient heating method but definitely the most cozy! Good job guys!

LADDER: You could cut out a few rungs to allow you to walk through the top of the ladder and onto the roof. It would dedicate that ladder for roof work primarily but sure would take the jitters out.

Tip for cutting insulation. Lay it down with the paper side down on a wood surface you don't mind if it get scarred. Put your wood slat straight edge on top and squash it flat. You can then cut the insulation and the paper in one pass with the utility knife.

My husband built and installed a metal 12/12 roof on our home. 25 feet from north side and 35feet from the south. If it rained a drop he'd shut her down for the day. That metal is so slippery. Glad your feet are firmly back on the ground.

"Tips" - # 1. The SIDE of your building with the FLAT horizontal edge would have been safer. ( non sloping edge ) ANY slope makes a flat vertical ladder ( inherently / physically ) more unstable if placed against it. ( simple physics and gravity -- With the right ascending slope - gravity will always want to push you off the ladder and to the left while lifting the right leg of ladder - and then slide down the slope ) My hope is that she outweighs you and always stands on the bottom rung. And that you have ambulance service - a hospital nearby - and health insurance + life insurance. Not kidding. # 2. There are ladder end "T" additions you can add to ladders for high roof work - "arms" right and left at the top of the ladder that rest on the roof. ( Which would only work - however - on a flat horizontal edge - as previously mentioned ) And - # 3. A "hack" of roofers is to cut out a top rung or 2 on extension ladders for walking directly onto the roof. ( no inherently more unstable "side stepping" )

@@TallisonEI That is the safest way and then if you need a tether it will go up over the peak of the roof. I like to use a climbing ascender on the rope so I can always have just a small amount of slack. I learned this doing tower work years ago. Just remember that if you anchor your rope to a vehicle to disable it. Years ago a lady drove off in her vehicle with her husband tied to it while he was on the roof.

Thought: consider installing a pair of "ladder finger thingies" on the gable. The fingers poke out from the gable, and the ladder goes between them. Then the ladder can't tip over.

Best way I heat my cabin with my wood burner is starting it with a split pine log, then add in some oak once the fire is going good, turn down the air intake and 2 oak logs should last you all night, best way to start a wood burning stove is to make a fire starter, like some cardboard wrapped newspaper with wax, or to do it traditionally with some tinder and kindling and building up from there, also if you don't have it, should buy a pass through automatic induction pipe, it goes above the stove and when the stove gets hot, it kicks on a fan that pulls air through horizontal pipes that go through the chimney and it essentially helps distribute warm air

I have solar panels on my roof and a wood stove flue that require cleaning. the answer is to weld up and install two loops (like a swimming pool ladder) and securely bolt them (permanently) a ladder width apart onto your roof, you put the ladder between them and it can't fall sideways and you can use them as handles to just go up and down over the top of your ladder. much safer. You can also install a small concrete pad for the ladder base.

Nice video! When your veranda is complete you might consider installing a permanent ladder to the roof. Climbing with safety harness attached to the ladder rungs is good. Ladders with surrounding hoop rings prevent backward falls and can be leaned against for resting. Outside ladders mean no hole in the roof. Inside ladders mean easy and dry access. Screw eyes or eye bolts make good anchor points. The USN and FAA uses lots of Ladders with safety a major factor. Your house, your choice! Ron PTL USA

Proper wood burning oven with mass heat storage would be more efficent, wouldn't have to add more wood all the time and it wouldn't cool down right after you stop adding wood to it. That is how it's done here in Finland for hundreds of years.

Hi. Outstanding work. Stop using the ladder to get on the roof. Cut an access interior roof door or sliding panel that will allow you onto the roof. Also install a safety cable from one end of the roof line to the other side that would be you safety line on which to hook into with you harness. The cable only needs to be about 3 inches above the ridge line and secured evenly spaced. BE SAFE !!
