Winter cabbage is so much better than summer cabbage. It is sweeter and doesn't taste as strong. Some brussel sprouts sure would grow good in your greenhouse this winter too! Meg honey, you need to slow down. You have gone full force all summer gardening, canning, and canning, and canning, all while still cooking 3 meals a day, making breads and other baked goods, laundry, taking care of the baby, and since September, homeschooling the boys. Please take it easy and rest more. I'm sure every morning you hit the ground running and never stop until you lay your head down at night. So please slow down and rest more. Get those knitting needles out and let's have a winter MAL ("make along" for those unfamiliar with knitting/crochet lingo)! I knit and crochet a lot because it's so restful and a great way to de-stress after a hectic day! I need to start knitting some cowls because they help me stay warm in the wintertime. Also, cowls and neck warmers are small enough projects to not take too long to make so you can have a finished project faster than a big project. Bet a lot of your subscribers like to knit and crochet and would love to join in on a "Hollar MAL"! Could be anything people want to make (dishcloths, hats, scarfs, shawls, socks, cowls, neckwarmers, headband/ear warmers, etc! Just small projects that are quick and fun! It's such a nice way to relax in the evening on cold winter nights!

Bear in mind I know nothing, but I have heard that without a first frost on them Raspberries are rubbish, Sprouts (brassica) are not super like you recall them tasting. So it might be right about your sweet potatoes, so do a head to head tasting with those you already pulled, and the ones that now might need digging up. This is my best guess as to how you find out the truth in the things other people will tell us. 🤔A great opportunity for you there. 🤞Rest of the planting is looking ok as far as I can know. 🤨That food you cooked looked so inviting! 👍Be well.😉

Do begin to think of seed starter shelves for use in your green house. Ideal are 18" to 24" but on a slant with a front lip so that those seedlings in the back of a seed tray can get light. Shelf width and length are dependent upon the seed trays you are using and/ or 4" pot holders you might use. Height is often 3 or 4 shelves high depending upon the stability, green house design, and green house set up; I've seen them as low as only 2 shelves high. I have also seen them with 24" vertical spacing for fixed shelves, on a slant, with cleats enabling upto 2 removable shelves inbetween the fixed shelves (cleats enabling slanted shelves). Then, depending upon the season the shelving units facing outward for maximum sun or inward for some more dappled sun.

Oh, I hope Mama Meg got a good night's rest after this video! Greenhouse is looking so good! Just curious, have you considering putting some large containers/raised beds in the greenhouse or sticking to in-ground planting only? Over at Deep South Homestead on YT their greenhouses are amazingly productive, though I know y'all have lots of mentors and a always-learning attitude! On another note, I homeschooled multiple boys (no gals like cute Buggy) who are now all adults. One of my requirements for HS was a 'home ec for guys" class which I wrote the goals/objectives for etc then for certain areas of food (desserts, one dish meals, etc) I let them choose the dishes to learn. It was SO helpful for me, and I wanted to make sure that like their dad, they could help as needed in their own homes whether single or married. And if they married, they could help beyond just taking turns/assisting in the kitchen, but totally be OK if a wife was sick, on bedrest, etc. Sooooo....get those guys a cooking would be my suggestion! (though they may do that already and we just don't see it on YT)

It may well be easier for you to grow things like tomatoes, chillies and cucumbers outdoors, but for me they arent hardy, so a greenhouse/polytunnel was the first thing I bought, and in the winter its helped carry things through and get a head start for sowing. I would suggest sliding doors for the opening and vents over the doors if possible, allows for great air movement. I'd also get an barrel for water (leave it outside and add a gutter so rainwater can refill it) and set up a drip irrigation system (so all you will need to do is turn the tap - and remember to turn it off) otherwise you and the boys will be in watering during the summer -and whilst it's fun at first, it will get hot and boring and no one will want to do it especially when there are other more exciting jobs to do....but those are all projects to add to the list for a later date...

Greenhouses have a special place in my heart - big or small. In your climate, the plants you chose should do well in there. BTW - the strong wind & chilly day time temps describes the weather we had way up here in MA today, & why I ended up working inside. You got your greenhouse up & planted just in time, with overnight temps dropping into the 30s - just like up here in Zone 5B! Isn't this unusually cold for your area? Now that the sun's setting (@ 6 PM) the wind has just calmed down.
@terryhenderson4242 жыл бұрын
More densely planted vegetation helps shield against sun and evaporation but also the first chills. However, the orchard is closer to the creek and, you may be getting some chillier or frozen water droplets in the air too.
@stuartball35382 жыл бұрын
I would put raised beds around the outer edge of the inside to stop the wind pushing through the bottom

You should store your ICB totes in your green house too. Put a black tarp over them and they will collect heat from the sun during the day and release that heat at night during the winter.

I have set up a few of these tunnels and my favourite way to lay them out is with a 18-24" middle walkway down the centre with two beds on each side about 12" wide for tomatoes, cucumbers - vining things.. Then a smaller walkway just enough to walk through,12" ish, then a big bed along each outside - around 30". I like to plant my peppers on the outside rows, but you can also do cucumbers, melons etc with that 5' of height! I've done it with less. I like to make the two centre beds a few feet in when you enter so you can use a wheelbarrow, and easily get into the outside walkway. At the end of the tunnel I shortened one centre and one outside row for a potting area and storage. Another thing that's super handy is to plant some herbs right by the front door so you have fresh herbs in the middle of winter when the raised beds have snow or are frozen :) So excited for you!! Excited to see what you do with it :)
@cherylhecht60382 жыл бұрын
You guys should install baseboards and hipboards on the caterpillar tunnel. Put roll down sides vs roll up sides. Heat rises so if you roll down a foot to vent excess heat it will help. Roll up sides chill the plant and soil and causes shock. You could add window screen from base to hip board as bug control so that bugs don't invade. Just some ideas
