Agreed. I'm sure whatever they do to it will be sensible, but I'd rather see it kept stock and used as a long-term feature on the channel. There are so few examples like this left, and what makes it special is that it hasn't been "cheap Jeeped" already. I'm not even a particular fan of the MJ, but anything of that vintage that remains untouched is most valuable to the hobby as it is.

Woohoo! A Comanche. I purchased a completely stock 88 Comanche 4x4 short bed sport truck last year in Los Angeles. It was rust free with 180,000 miles. I drove it 3,500 miles home to Pennsylvania with no big issues. It was completely rust free and perfectly awesome to drive. Mine did have the original BA-10 transmission at 180k and it shifted very well. I sold it on Bring a Trailer around Thanksgiving last year. This is a nice one, way better paint and I like the cloth interior. Mine had a surprisingly nice vinyl interior.

31” tires and enough lift to clear them and let it articulate. ARB front bumper with a receiver hitch to handle a portable winch which can be carried in the bed to add weight for better traction. Rear receiver hitch and wiring so the winch can be moved to either end. Spray on bed liner. Tool box to carry all the off-road gear and tools. E lockers front and rear. That should handle most of Moab.

We camped out of it and wheeled it all over. Great trucks! I towed back to Texas and turned it into a hunting rig and we still use it today on the ranch. 215,xxx miles later and other than required maintenance it’s only needed a new water pump, radiator, and clutch master/slave cylinder. @willohwhite2372 5 жыл бұрын
I can see why you bought this, but I'm afraid it's not the best choice for a cheap jeep challenge. Doing anything to modify this truck, especially as a budget build, is approaching sacrelig. Further to that, although it's essentially an XJ, it's not a build that everyone can follow along with and feel like they've duplicated on their own because it's just too rare. With that said, Maybe while you have the transmission out, swap in a 242 transfer case. They are cheap, plentiful, and worlds ahead of the part time unit that's in there. 2" of lift, some top quality dampers, proper narrow tires (8.5-9.5" width), locking differentials and call it a day. This is one of those vehicles that really lends itself to enjoying the original condition rather than hacking it up like most of the other examples that are left.
@MrJoshItIs
@MrJoshItIs 5 жыл бұрын
Agree with pretty much everything you said! I don't know much about the stock transfer case, which is it? Also, maybe Detroit in the front and Tru-trac in the back would be a cheaper locker upgrade.
@willohwhite2372
@willohwhite2372 5 жыл бұрын
@@MrJoshItIs I'm not sure, but I think this would have an NP231, similar to 207/208 chain shift on the fly part time with 3 drive modes. The 242 brings in the full time option which is the hot ticket for daily driving on snowy/icy roads. The only consideration is that with a full time 4wd case, you can't use a lunchbox type locker in the front, it has to be a selectable or a limited slip that will allow the diff to operate normally on asphalt while in full time (like a varilok/hydralok). If you've ever driven a full time 4wd vehicle with a front locker, engaging the front locker while in 4wd makes it impossible to steer. Any automatic locker that could engage while in full time basically makes the FT unusable. I would go so far as to swap in the NV247 which doesn't have the 2wd (I have no use for 2wd for any reason) but uses a progressive coupler in the diff during FT, making it an outstanding performer in mud and ice. It locks mechanically in 4low. Most people don't care about the FT that much though, it's just a few die-hards like me that love the FT. My first FT 4wd was my 75 440 Ramcharger which I still drive, and I'll never go back to a PT 4wd.
@MrJoshItIs
@MrJoshItIs 5 жыл бұрын
@@willohwhite2372 My Jeep has an ARB in front, Detroit in the rear with the NP231. When in 4wd and locking the front, it is pretty damn hard to steer unless in mud/ice, so I get the idea. When driving in iced up roads, I engage 4wd (no front locker though). I had a Sub' with AWD and that was a beauty in the ice & snow.
@willohwhite2372
@willohwhite2372 5 жыл бұрын
@@MrJoshItIs that's exactly what I'm talking about! I'll bet you can probably drive over anything in front of you though, with the ARB/Detroit that thing must be like a stomper! They aren't glamorous but upgrading your diffs is probably the biggest improvement you can make.

I remember those Comanches growing up. Congrats! That's a hell of a find. My suggestions? Keep it as stock as possible and maintain it like a classic daily driver. Get the AX-15 and maybe a stronger transfer case from a local junkyard. Install a bedliner, or even a bed mat so it doesn't more scuffed, and a tonneau cover. You have to take to off road so decent tires, maybe Wrangler SilentArmors, biggest ones you can fit without a lift. A good wash and wax, and be the envy of Jeep Nerds (like me) everywhere. There's something really cool about a clean, stock, old Jeep.

My mods. 1) a class III receiver hitch which tucks up under rear bumper. It does not impact rear ground clearance but gives rear sheet metal protection and a place to hook a trailer up to 5,000 lbs and a place to attach tow hooks and straps. 2) The only difference between the 1/2 tone Comanche and the metric ton (2200 lb payload vs 1450 lb payload) was the 2nd fan on the radiator, Comes with on A/c spec, a Dana 44 rear axle with bigger drum brakes and the stock steel wheels, and different front and rear springs. That was it. The body structure is the same. The un extended all the way to the front suspension on the Comanche vs the Cherokee. If you look under both your xj Cherokee and mj Comanche, you will see a lot more under body structure all the way to the front, look at the boxed frame section installed on the Comanche around the lower front control arm links which are not installed on the Cherokee. 3) I would also add the front tow hook kit. It adds heavy duty brackets behind the bumper. And can extend the bumper forward 4 inches in order to install a wench behind the front bumper. These are all OEM factory options or accessories designed to bolt onto the truck. 4) I would also consider adding a rear differential locker or limited slip. Maybe a lunch box to the front. This would still look stock when done. 5) There was also a factory accessory 2 inch lift kit available. 6) Another thing. The select track full time/part time transfer case which was available for the Cherokee is a direct bolt in. It was actually offered on the 1985 and 1986 model year Comanche. I almost purchased a new 1987 1 metric ton model with those options new at the Jeep dealer. It was dropped in 1988.

Hello from Poland! Make a little bit of lift, just 2" which is really cheap and easy in XJ/MJ (in the front springs from Jeep ZJ will give this amount of lift, and in the rear just add longer shackles for leaf springs). Then You can install 31" AT or MT tires. Don't reapair this Peugeot gearbox, throw it away and put AW4 automatic gearbox from XJ. It's the best gearbox for soft offroad and onroad use.

Wonderful choice on the Commanche! If even just to spruce up and flip. I've always liked them very much, but I think the consensus is that the drive train options are kinda limited for serious offroading when you don't do swap jobs on the axles, tcase, drive shafts, etc. But I've always suspected they are quite good and fun for anything else. Can't wait for the next video! Great show as usual guys!

Super sweet pick up guys. That inline 6 will be amazing. You should do a stroker kit and new pistons and lift it. My buddy did exactly that and the thing was unstoppable off roading. Oh and he did a snorkel. Because we did a ton of serious off roading and mudding and it was beautiful and I never saw him get stuck.

I bought mine from a farmer and it was clapped out. Three years later and I’m not even close to finishing it. Granted, I am making mine a DD and for moderate off-roading but I would kill for an original MJ. Great find and I look forward to seeing what y’all do! Welcome to the club!

I think you should clean the rust in the bed and spray bed liner in it. Do a full suspension rebuild like replacing all rubber bushings and painting all components in the suspension. Rubber bushings and paint or very cheap but really good content for your channel

I could see you making this truck into a sweet light trail overland camper. Small lift maybe enough to fit 30’s put a set of roof rails across the bed (strong enough to support a rooftop tent). Keep it simple and have fun!

John Phillips jr I prefer the Comanche. A 4 cylinder automatic Wrangler is about as boring as Wranglers can get. This is far more interesting than the Wrangler they previously had.

Love the new project vehicle. I think you should keep it simple by doing a tire upgrade on the stock wheels, replace the shocks (no lift) with the best replacement units you can find. With the short wheel base and overhangs, this should be very capable off-road. Along with the tranny repair, you may want to proactively cut the exhaust manifold if it hasn’t cracked yet.

I say put a good set of A/T tires on it. Maybe some Falken Wildpeak A/T3W’s. They’re pretty cheap for good A/T’s. Clean up that one little rust spot and spray in a bed liner and that’s it. Oh and don’t forget to fix the transmission. After that you could probably make more money on it than than the Wrangler. They are a lot more rare.

Here is what I think. -Cold Air Intake -Free flowing exhaust (These will give you a little better performance and make the truck sound like a truck & you can DIY these.) -Repair/upgrade transmission -Spray/roll on bedliner (You can get these DIY which do a decent job “on the cheap”.) -Better/more aggressive tires with possibly a mild lift/level. -If it doesn’t have it, tow hooks/recovery points front & rear. -LED lighting front & rear. (Plenty of “cheap” options out there for this.) -Fix any mechanical issues.

That's a super clean truck! Do as little as possible since like you guys said, thats rare. *Get the AX15 transmission, not worth putting money in the currento one baby it along for awhile. *Good, cool tires, on those cool, stock wheels! *Spartan locker in the rear. *Bedliner in the bed so you can use it without banging it up. Done!

I had a 1989 Comanche that I bought new. It was a 2WD automatic transmission and unfortunately it was totaled in an accident when another vehicle turned in front of me. I was totally pleased with it. Great performance (gas mileage not so much) but it was still running well with original engine and trans at 185,000 miles and I expected to get many more out of it. Great little truck. If it was me I would probably put lockers on at least the rear to help traction since it is light.

At first I thought "Didn't you have already a nice XJ?"... and then I saw the bed and my jaw dropped - you have nailed it with this beautiful MJ, TFL! My advice is to coat/undercoat it and protect it since it is quite rare and fix what is broken, rusty or dry rotted . Original size Mud terrains and a rear locker and thats it. Just an idea:) Keep up your great work!

That's probably the only jeep I ever liked, nice find. Keep it some what stock, but freshen it up a bit with some add ons. What ever it cost to change to an AX-15 trans do it!!!!! Then keep this one as the official "TFL office truck". Throw some tasteful "TFL" advertising on it (which should allow any money put into the truck to now be used as a tax right off). This thing will always turns heads, so people who see it and don't know who TFL is, will want to find out who you guys are.

Keep the original wheels, new AT tires (nothing super aggressive), small push bar/grill guard, round tube light bar in the bed with KC daylighters, undercoat, some sort of bed refinishing/restoration, standard tune up, fluid changes all around, dual battery set up (just because... Well... Yeah just because lol), and new suspension components (no lift, just new parts).

I had an ‘87 Comanche SporTruck, one of the last of the AMC vintage with a 4.0 straight 6, 5-speed Peugeot transmission. Put 270,000 on it, had to replace the clutch at 238,000. Had to deal with issues with the 3-4 synchromesh grinding, too; got around it by double-clutching. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of it because it finally wouldn’t pass California smog, but it was the best little truck I ever drove. Paint job was shot after driving through a desert sand storm, but I could got pretty much anywhere with it in the California desert. I agree-restore it, maybe give it a small lift with larger tires. Seeing this thing brought back a lot of good memories...
