It's not safe to sleep in your vehicle, but sleeping in a tent out on the deck is perfectly safe 😂 great video as always! This one was super fun!

If the ship where to be going down, you rather be up on deck close to liferafts and what not than on the lowest car deck in an RV, right?

Probably also don’t want people dying of carbon monoxide poison if they decide to run their engines in an enclosed area. Awesome video. Deck camping looks cool.

We moved to Sitka on the Columbia in 1994. We had a pre schooler and jr high kid, 3 cats, 2 cars and a corgi. We did have a cabin, but over the next decade to numerous trips on the Alaska Marine Highway and slept in the Solarium many, many nights. 10 years later we left Sitka on the Kennicutt and drove across Canada with one kid, the same 3 cats, corgi, but only one Subaru, to our new home in Vermont.

When you've booked a 'room with a view,' but chance decides to give you the entire oceanfront suite instead. It's like a floating campsite where starry nights come with a gentle lullaby of engine vibrations. Glad you turned this into an interesting experience. I mean, you're may not be camping, but you're 'maritime glamping!' I've done few unconventional accommodations for our TV show so two thumbs for you guys!

Unfortunately, the state has been cutting ferry routes and staff for years at this point. There used to be at least twice a week ferries north in the summer. I live in Ketchikan and spent my youth doing activities across southeast. I've ridden that ferry about 10 times. Our most common route though was to drive to Prince Rupert, BC and take a six hour ferry ride to Ketchikan.
@Theendlessadventure

Such a bummer. We met quite a few people onboard who said the ferry used to run all the time, so they'd hop off for a few days here and there and just catch the next one. Now, you'd be stranded for at least a week if you got off :/

I did that trip for my 40th Bday, sleeping out on a deck chair. I was vastly under prepared for the temp at night with too thin a sleeping bag. It was a fantastic adventure with a very interesting, fun group of fellow deck campers going to Alaska for all different reasons. Hope you made some friends.

There was a time when I frequently ferried back and forth to Sardinia from the Italian mainland. Slept on deck (no tents), in hallways, lounges, etc. with my sleeping bag with a less than luxurious inflatable mattress. Even tried the rooms a couple of times. In season, the decks are fine. The hallways were ok when it got a bit cooler. In Winter, I would book a room - more availability and a little cheaper. The droning of the engines was constant. Earplugs were a necessity for sleeping. You can't sleep late in a room. Bang, bang, bang on the door early and intercom music blaring to wake you up. I actually slept better on deck.

I remember in 1995 traveling with ferry between France and England by night. I had to sleep on the floor and it was cold. There was also a storm and ferry was rocking. I hated it so much. And end of it I got a flu. Worst trip ever. 😊Even thinking about doing the same thing you are doing I would say no. I could never do 3 day trip like you do. Good luck to you and I hope you get to safely to Alaska.👍🙂

So cool - didn't realize you can take a "ferry" from Washington to Alaska ! @2:33 No state room ! @3:27 ". . .three days and seven hours . . . " And , no state room . @8:56 3 hrs to wait for Eric in Clementine . That's a long wait !!! @15:00 the dining room and food looked pretty good and probably expensive, but why not for a once in a life time trip ! Welcome to Washington. I hope you take some time to explore the state more, especially east of the Cascades. Come to the Yakima Valley, visit the Columbia Basin, too many places to list. Went on an Alaska cruise this year. Second time. We thought it would be cool to take the RV up there and spend a couple weeks seeing things you don’t have time to on a cruise. Much to our horror, the price to load up the RV and book a cabin on board, so as to not sleep in a tent on the fantail of the ferry, was twice the cost of the cruise, and that didn’t include food; you have to buy that a la carte on board. We’ll add this to our bucket list.

In 2013 I purchased an exotic sports and had it delivered to Salt lake City. In no way did I ever think of driving the car to Anchorage. I spent a month touring the northwest and arrived in Bellingham two days before sailing. I had also purchased a cabin with full bathroom at a reasonable price so all I needed was to buy some prepared food for the trip, but the meals on board are excellent. Camping on the sun deck is an experience, but if you can sleep in a recliner, the main lounge has plenty of room. It was a blast of a trip. We stopped in Ketchikan, a couple of other places , and Juneau where we switched ships to one of the ocean going ferries. Made one last stop in Yakutat. Plenty of glacier and wildlife viewing along the way. By the way - you do NOT arrive in Anchorage. The ship docks in Whittier about an hour and a half south of ANC and you will drive through a long tunnel and then have a beautiful drive along Turnagain Arm to ANC. One last comment - when I arrived at the loading dock in Bellingham I spoke to the bosun about my new, expensive car and could he find a safe place for the car where it was not likely to be bumped or dinged by other vehicles. He put me in an isolated spot at the bow - safe and sound. Many thanks to the Captain and Crew.

We liked our first trip on the Alaska Marine Highway so much that we did it again. The first time, with our fifth wheel, the second time we flew to Bellingham and waited till in Alaska to rent a Class C RV. The first time we waited too late to get a tiny "state room" and slept in the open to the rear but heated atrium, so the second time, we chose that. We slept in sleeping bags on the comfortable reclining deck chairs. We spent two days in Juno before going on to Haines and up to Fairbanks. While I have not done a cruise, this was so much fun, and being able to get off then back on a later boat was great for seeing all we wanted to see of Alaska. We spent a month there each time, once in June, the second time in August.

The signals from those radios you used can sometimes break into nearby am/fm radios that people may be listening to in their cars, or other locations, so that your conversation is easily audible to them, so make sure you aren't saying anything too personal when using them.
