ABBA's music was as diverse as The Beatles. When you listen to Waterloo followed by The Visitors you would not think it was the same band. They progressed and experimented so much over the space of just 8 years. Benny and Björn are such gifted songwriters, they've written countless classics and Agnetha and Frida have such beautiful voices that blend so well together. A lot of people only seem to, know them for their more mainstream dance pop stuff like Dancing Queen and Voulez Vous, but a lot of their deep cuts especially in the late 70's and early 80's show just how versatile they are. I've been a fan of theirs since I was a kid and can never tire of listening to them. I went to the ABBA Voyage show in London last year, it was brilliant and so amazingly done. It's so strange to have new music from them after a 40 year 'hiatus'! Just makes me sad how much more great music we could have had from them in those wasted years, if only they'd continued! Anyway, some of my favourite singles of theirs are The Name Of The Game, Take A Chance On Me, Eagle (full album version), The Day Before You Came, The Winner Takes It All, One Of Us, Gimme Gimme Gimme and Angeleyes, but many of my fave songs are their non-single album tracks and B-sides. Glad you're checking out this iconic band. :)

The song's lyrics are not about Napoleon or the battle of Waterloo but as you gathered about a relationship. The girl is "facing her Waterloo", which is an expression meaning that you have something difficult to master. They are cleverly using this expression and references to Napoleon throughout the song: eg. "At Waterloo Napoleon did surrender and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way" meaning that she surrendered to love when meeting her boyfriend eg "Now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight" eg "I was defeated, you won the war" So the metaphor of the war or a battle is used for the relationship: he had to conquer her and she finally gave up and surredered to him. The video is indeed "simplistic"', but don't forget that this was 1974. There were no videoclips and no MTV back then. In fact ABBA were among the first to experiment with making videoclips, so that they didn't have to travel everywhere to perform their songs in tv shows all over Europe, let alone America or other places.

Very different, absolutely fantastic songs with the Abba sound and those amazing vocals and harmonies of the two ladies. Agnetha Fälstkog (blond) was married to Björn Ulvaeus playing the guitar and Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad was married with the pianist, Benny Andersson. They all had a successful carriers on their own before Abba.

Memories... for a couple of years I listened to Abba, not much in these days. In -82 Frida released a solo album, in one of the songs 'I know there's something going on', Phil Collins play drums. She had, back then, a very clean and clear voice.

Yes these are 2 couples. Ani-Frid aka Annie or Frida who has the curly hair here is married to the pianist Benny. Agnetha the blonde girl married the guitarist Bjorn. That's where the name ABBA comes from, the first initials of their names

Great Great rabbit hole to go down. Great band. Only the Beatles have sold more albums! This was their break out hit winning eurovision with it. It is about a woman surrendering to love like Napoleon's waterloo surrender.. They are from Sweden. Blonde is Agnethea who is married to the guitarist Bjorn. The auburn haired girl is Ani-Frid aka Frida or Annie and married the piano player Benny. The guys wrote the songs mostly and could play any instrument. The ladies were the lead singers. Forgot to add: After Stig's Polar Music producer died, Stig hired Bjorn and Benny as Polar Music house producers. BB were writing and producing for lots of artist. Stig's goal: to get Swedish artist heard beyond Sweden. Stig is credited, not only for ABBA, but putting popular music from Sweden on the world's map. He succeed!

A side note: Can you remember the electro-pop duo 'Erasure'? I love synth music from the 80's/early 90's, and Erasure were one of the best. They did a tribute to ABBA called 'Abba-esque'. Four songs. Their video for 'Take a Chance on me' has them dressed like the girls in this video. 😂

This was not their first release. Waterloo came 1974. They even had tried Eurovision once in 1973 before but were not successful. Their first single came in 1972 (although under another name than ABBA). In 1973 they also released their first LP, Ring Ring.
