Congratulations! I see you settled in Umbria instead of Piedmont. Nice house! I researched almost all of Italy but I still feel like Liguria is ideal for me. Centrally located, not too cold for olive trees and other Mediterranean flora but not too hot like the south of Italy. I was surprised to to learn the process only took you six weeks! I was planning to look at houses last year on my way back from China but I ran out of time so I’m hoping to return to Europe this year to finally choose a house. I just want to learn as much as I can before I make the final decision. Unfortunately, I don’t really know anyone in Italy so I worry about getting scammed. I don’t mind living a bit out of the way but I’ve heard rumours that foreigners aren’t allowed to drive their own cars in Italy so I’ve been trying to find something ideal near a town big enough to have it’s own train station in case I’m not allowed to drive. Anyway, I look forward to more of your videos to see what you’ve discovered since moving to Umbria.

We love Umbria out of all the places we've been in Italy! Very centrally located, 2 hours north of Rome, 2 hours south of Florence and 2 hours from either coastline💞🇮🇹 We have a train station about 30 minutes to get to just about anywhere. In fact we just took a train trip to Belgium. Driving in Italy without an Italian Italian license is very much discouraged. I exchanged my US license for a Belgium license so I'm good because its an EU license. Wishing you all the best in your search for the perfect spot! ~ Debbie

I know what it means to be stopped in Spain without an international driving license so I got one of those hoping it would keep me out of trouble. Drove a rental through northern Italy once and had no trouble so I suppose I can try it again even if I must buy a car in Spain first. If all else fails, I suppose I can try to get an Italian driving license up in the German speaking region or if that doesn’t work, I’ll have to settle on a house in Spain. Good to see you back and with even better news! I have been following you for a while now since we are on a similar quest and I just knew Italy was it for you. We decided to sell everything in our homeland Holland 3 years ago and travel Europe in the hope of eventually finding our bit of paradise. Then Covid hit and we got " stuck" in Spain. We always expected to end up in Italy since it has been our number uno travel destination for many, many years. However, during our time in Spain we travelled the length and width of it and kinda fell in love with Galicia. Italy can still be a holiday destination. Today of all days we expect a reply on the offer we made on a house there! The thing we learned in the 3 years (partially because of lockdown) traveling is that for us it is more comfortable traveling with the security of a homebase to fall back on. Living out of suitcases for 3 years is overrated! Congrats you guys and I look forward to seeing more of your house and grounds.

They even stayed with us in hotel rooms. Maybe something to consider doing with your kitty since traveling is part of your future. All the best to you both!

We got so upset that we called an agent in Italy and she found us an apartment in Umbria in a little hilltop town and we are moving there next week. This will be our basecamp for the near future while we travel Italy. I guess Spain was just not meant too be but Italy was always in the cards!

Curious to know how they price houses in Italy…How do you if it’s a fair price?In America you can easily go online and search the comps in the neighborhood etc..

It's certainly more challenging to assess the value/price of less common homes, but can still be done through the comparison to similar properties. One thing to keep in mind is that in the current market conditions (at least in more rural settings) most homes can be listed for 4-5 years before they sell so you can be aggressive with your offer.

Yep, they take it all, even the kitchen sink! The house had been empty for almost 3 years, that's when they took the kitchen. So, no we never saw the kitchen when we looked at the house. It's very common in Italy that when the sellers move they take the kitchen..... and light fixtures! This is common even if you rent!

As an example where we are in Umbria we are it 2 hours from Rome, 2 hours from Florence and 2 hours from either coast line! Oh, and about 10 miles from the Tuscan border! Umbria is the green heart of Italy and is the only land locked region.

There are many options, depends on your passport situation, financial means etc. Very difficult to make blanket statements but it's relatively doable for most people.

If you have sufficient recurring income stream it's relatively easy to obtain a non-working retirement visa for italy. I'd enquire with your local consulate or embassy about the process and requirements.
