I'm so glad to see such sweet, humble, gentle middle-aged men being uplifted and recognised as still being valuable to their careers. I think on how hard it is for men once they reach 50 to regain employment if they are put out of work, my own father faced this after a redundancy in his 50s and being unable to find work despite having awards in his field. It's like they are thrown on the scrap heap of society. But these guys haven't gotten angry and violent, they've faced it with grace and humility, and with hard work they've regained their careers, may they be long and fruitful careers that bring them happiness. (And if you're wondering, my dad never did get his career back, but he did go back and get a diploma in IT and had a whole new career, he too faced it with grace and hard work)

I just watched the 1998 movie "Gods and Monsters" (for the first time) where Fraser was still in his "heartthrob" stage, but you can tell that, even back then, he was much more than just being a good-looking guy. He was amazing in that movie, and he still managed to shine despite being next to the amazing Ian McKellen whose acting, as everyone knows, has always simply been flawless. The young Fraser reminds me of another good-looking actor Heath Ledger who did not just have a pretty face but knew his craft really really well.

My two friends said Ke Huy is very talkative and expressive for an Asian. But they emphasized that's a GOOD thing bc some if not many Asians are quiet in group settings. Ke kinda breaks that mold. Also, if you're going to make ur mark, it's better to make yourself seen and heard.

That's true! I have a deaf Vietnamese friend (we're both deaf) who was in almost the exact same predicament as Ke Huy Quan (she's one of the boat people as well - but unlike him, she camped out briefly in Malaysia then Panama before coming to the US). My friend is unusually talkative and expressive for an Asian woman, but the circumstances in her life made her assimilate into the American lifestyle and culture - she had to adapt. And that's even tougher for a deaf child who came to the US at age 10. She didn't even know any language at all then (her hometown in Vietnam was very war-torn and there weren't any good access to deaf education back then, so she relied on gestures to communicate with her family), so American Sign Language became her first language then English. She quickly picked up math, but due to language delay, she had to work 4 times as hard at learning ASL and English. She's now a community college teacher and teaches ASL to middle and high school students, and is raising a family. She still sometimes struggles with idioms and vague statements, so she'd ask me to fill in the blanks. She prefers straight, clear statements with as little usage of idioms as possible. But she's bright, driven, fiercely independent, has a very strong work ethic, and a fighter for what she believes in. I'm simply honored to know her.
